well i know someone who got differed and wrote a letter and eventually was accepted. don’t know if it was necessarily the letter that got him in, but i don’t think it can hurt. mich isn’t going to reject you because you say you love their school

if we send in our letter within this week, is there chance we can get accepted really soon?

I got the ‘good’ deferral letter

My first semester doesnt/ grades dont get finalized till end of january though. I probably will get 6 A’s and 1 B, possibly a research publication, and maybe an extra letter of recommendation?, and this letter i will write…will this all help?

my first semester grades don’t get finalized until january either, i’m going to talk to my counselor. i actually applied early decision to NYU so i’m waiting until tuesday when results come out to do anything, but i doubt i’ll get in there.

Yeah ill probably talk to my counselor as well.

Good luck with NYU! hopefully you will get in :)

thanks so much! me too :)

When UM says, “While this is not the answer that you were hoping to hear, it is still good news. Your application is one of a group that remains under consideration,” do they mean it? It makes me feel like I’ve still got a shot but people are saying that a deferral is a deferral nonetheless and all are treated equally in the RD round. Help!

i honestly don’t know. i’m so bummed about this

Yeah my senior grades won’t be ready at least til January… should we even send anything besides that? From the deferral letter I got it seemed they only wanted sr grades and nothing else. I don’t want to bother them haha. If I were to send a letter though/another letter of rec, is it okay to do it before sr grades or should it all be sent together? :/

Does anyone know the percent of accepted students that were deferred?

can someone tell me if this is a good/medium/bad deferral (were def looking to far into this lol)

We have carefully considered your application to the University of Michigan College of Engineering for Fall 2013. Given our surging application volume and very strong credentials of our applicants, admission to the University is becoming increasingly competitive. As a result, your application has been deferred for a final decision until a later date.

Your application will be re-evaluated, and a final decision will be made based on how your credentials and academic achievements contribute to the composition and quality of this year’s freshman applicant pool. All final admissions decisions of admit, deny, or waitlist will be made no later than early-April, 2013.

Please refer to the website [Information for Deferred Students | University of Michigan Office of Admissions](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/deferred) for FAQ’s about the admission process and what to do next. Strong fall semester or second trimester grades may enhance your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward your fall semester or second trimester grades when they become available and be sure your U-M ID is on the material. Beyond that, we are confident that the information you have given us is more than sufficient for a final decision. The most successful candidates send us only what we require.

We hope your interest in Michigan continues, and you have our best wishes for an enjoyable and successful senior year.

Is this from faiintx considered the “good” “medium” or “bad” deferral letter?

i feel like michigan basically based their decisions on unweighted gpa (which i dont think is fair, but i’m not an admissions counselor)

that’s the “bad” one, sorry. i got the same one. i’ve been super depressed as well

I actually managed to get the good one, somehow. :P

But I’m still freaking the heck out…

I received the same deferral as FaintX (post #15) a couple years ago and was eventually accepted, if it helps.

ahhhh has anyone ever been accepted with the “bad” one? why is that the bad one???

Yeah, has anyone ever been accepted with the “bad” one? I’m so depressed now :(

Guys, I think you’re reading way too much into the type of letter they sent. They all basically say the same thing except for some minor wording changes. The type of letter you got is NOT going to determine whether or not you’ll get accepted. Calm down lol

yeah but one explicitly asks for grades

Both ask for grades
