Haha I think my friend meant it in the literal sense of the word. But then again she was also staying with a guy and is slightly uptight in general so she probably thought his room was dirty and generalized it to the entire dorm.

Any general experiences with Giles? Seems like no one got that dorm on facebook, except few of us.

Yeah, I lived in Giles last year. The rooms are pretty nice. Mine was 205 square feet, but that was because my room was right over the commons room. I also had a ~50 square foot closet. Other rooms on our floor weren't much smaller than that, but their closets were a bit smaller. It's overall a very nice dorm, though the colors they chose for the walls and carpet look disgusting together... but maybe that's just me :).

I still don't know which FOCUS is being housed in Giles. We had Art in Contemporary Society last year, but that FOCUS is only offered every other year, and there have been some switches in which FOCUSes are housed where... I know that the Genome one is being housed in Alspaugh this year.

I'm in the medieval and renaissance worlds cluster, and I'm in Bassett.

Anyone know anything about Bassett, by the way? Also, I believe I have a corner room (-02). Is this room necessarily bigger than middle rooms?

And a final question: Why can't Bassett residents use lofts? I looked on the website and it said, "Lofts are not permitted in Bassett, Bell Tower, Giles or Keohane residence halls because of the type of furniture that is provided in those buildings." What are they talking about?

quick off topic question: so i'm in Wilson 303C and its a single (which i knew about a while ago from bursar's) and I really didnt want a single so i requested reassignment (which doesnt look to good). but i've heard something about suites in Wilson and was wondering what they exactly are? i know about the whole bathroom situation, but are the roooms connected at all or are there lots of singles?

i'm in giles. wonder what it's like!

myweatherby-- you can't loft your beds because you already have half lofts... meaning that most of the east campus dorm beds are pretty low to the ground, but yours are elevated -- half as high as a loft would. you can fit dressers and refrigerators and stuff like that underneath. i think all west campus dorms are like it-- i really liked mine but i needed a step stool. you can, of course, lower your half loft if you don;t like it (or at least we could last year in kilgo)

Yeah, we had half-lofts in Giles as well. I had some friends who would turn them into "full lofts" by either buying cement blocks to stack underneath the legs or by stacking the lofts on the desks and other furniture. I liked the half loft the way it was, but I think that next year I'll have to get pretty crafty in my room in Edens...

Oooh, thanks guys. It seems like there is no information about Bassett out there, but you certainly provided some insight into the "special furniture" situation.

Didn't know where else to ask this...but, I'm going up to see Duke again next week and was wondering if I would be able to get into Blackwell to hopefully see my room. Would it be easy to get into, is there anyone I can talk to when I get there that would let me in?

hmm... there are people on campus for various events (summer school, a dance festival, TIP, etc.), so it's possible one of those has housing in Blackwell, and in that case you could stand by the door and wait for someone to leave. I know that regular DukeCards (read: cards of those who aren't doing summer session) don't work on campus for building access.

Perhaps when you get up to Duke, you can ask around in the Undergraduate Admissions office about gaining access briefly to Blackwell?

Of course if they won't let you, which, from what I've heard, is the likely scenario, look around for fire escapes. I know with Jarvis a bunch of people went before move in, climbed up the fire escape, and just peered in to see a general idea of a room.

I highly doubt they'd let you in your specific room, but from what I gather most of the Blackwell rooms are pretty similar. Just peering in windows is an easy way to take a look.

great, thanks guys!

Yeah, what's the deal with Bassett?

what do you people do with your loft after the schoolyear's over? sell it and buy a new one each year, take it home or keep it stored someplace? same goes for the fridge and all other furniture.

Does anyone know anything about third floor single in Alspaugh? Thanks!

Well it depends where you live as a sophomore. I just bought my loft from a sophomore I'm friends with, so it was a year old anyway. When I was done with it this year I just threw it away because I have a half loft next year. It's so hard to fit in a car and it's really difficult to find anyone willing to buy it at the end of the school year that it was just 100 times easier to get rid it of.

Of course, you can always see if you can store it somewhere. A bunch of my friends went in on a storage unit and they offered to let me just keep it there over the summer.

I don't know though...I'm glad I got rid of my loft because it was annoying.

How did those of you who lived in either of these dorms store your clothes? If you got additional shelving/closet accessories from BedBath&Beyond or any other stores, what kind did you get & how well did they work for you? It's hard to buy online since I dont know the dimensions of the nooks in the wall... but I think it's still my best option.

BASSETT!!

ok here's the deal (as of last year): Bassett is the best dorm on east campus for multiple reasons which will be listed below. anyone who disagrees is flat out wrong.
1) Great Rooms. For the most part the rooms in Bassett are larger than average. i happened to have the largest double in the dorm at approx. 220 sq. feet.
2) Location. Most people will complain about how far Bassett is from the bus stop. yes, it's true, it is farther away but there is an advantage to that. Living in Bassett helps tone down the "freshman 15". the 5 minute walk to and from the bus stop (i'd say about .25 miles each way) accounts for a nice workout each day. it's a great and unavoidable way to burn calories.
3) Basketball. The 1st floor of bassett hosts the infamous tripple that has been home to such men's basketball players as J.J. Redick, Josh McRoberts, and Greg Paulus. It may seem quite shallow, and perhaps it is, but it's always fun to walk down the hallway and say hi to your new friend who happens to be starting for the best college basketball team on earth.
4)People. true, this changes year by year. but i tend to believe in good karma. this building has it! the group of people in Bassett during the '05-'06 school year really bonded. i knew every single of the 150 people in the dorm, especially those on the 3rd floor (represent!).
5)Furniture. Last year each dorm room in Bassett recieved brand new furniture. beautiful. nothing was broken and most things finished the year in great shape.
6)The Bench. Great slogan (see one of the other forums to hear about this) and great shape. it's big, comfortable, and an awesome place to see and be seen (as far as duke benches go...)

overall, i'm a HUGE advocate for Bassett. it's a great place. if you're luck enough to be in room 314...you have a legacy to carry on.

aw just came up a little short I'm in Bassett 312.
