Official Dormitory Thread (calling current students!)

Congratulations to those who have chosen or will choose to become a part of Berkeley's C/O 2010! Now that we have chosen Berkeley as the school, we are faced with choosing the best fit environment. We all have the basic information and the structure of particular dorms:

http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/fallfreshmen.html

However, I think it would be great if current students could give us inside-information (i.e. academic atmosphere, social atmosphere, etc.).

Following is a list, and feel free to add on any information about the particular dorms!

*Clark Kerr Campus: *
1.

*Foothill: *
1.

Bowles: (all males)
1.

Stern: (all females)
1.

*Unit 1: *
1.

*Unit 2: *
1.

Unit 3:
1.

Clark Kerr: best food, big dorm rooms, most expensive, lots of athletes live there.

Foothill: quiet, bad food, quiet.

Bowles: scary bathrooms: only a thin yellow curtain to give you privacy when taking a shower, and the urinal is a few feet away (at least for the one I visited). it may be a "gay" experience.

stern: all female, seemed quiet when I visited my friend

Unit 1 and 2: the social dorms, very fun, food is average to good with lots of selections.

unit 3: dorms not as new as the other units.

If you were at Foothill, cant you eat at the other dorms also.

yes, that is correct

Foothill food is not that bad. It's gotten very good over the last couple of years.

What exactly distinguishes Unit 1 and Unit 2?

Distance, for one. Unit 2 is further away from campus.

hmm should i go with co-ed.. or all female... i wanna have fun but i wanna study and keep my grades up too.

Which dorms have the nicest facilities such as bathrooms and such. I got to look at Unit 3 last time I visited and it was one cramped co-ed bathroom for a floor of about 30 people. Know anything about Foothill or Clark.

from what i've heard, the units are really small. i'm thinking of dorming in the units in a triple. is this a good idea?

triple in the units = bad news.

triple in clark kerr = okay news.

double in clark kerr = resort city.

This is a great thread! Hopefully more Cal students contribute!

can freshmen get triple suites? i really want one of those

Bowles - I lived there for my first semester (and part of the second half). I have to say that the facility quite run down. The bathrooms are old, and every time someone flushes a toilet in the building, scalding hot water comes out of the showers.

Luckily, I transferred out of Bowles, and now I live in the Unit 1 mini-suites. Normally they're reserved for sophomores and juniors, although some freshmen get them. They were only recently built, so they're in great condition. The rooms are larger than regular Unit rooms, but smaller than Clark Kerr rooms. Each suite (containing 2 rooms w/ 4-5 people) gets its own bathroom.

For a freshman, a unit double is probably your best bet, unless if you like the spacious Clark Kerr rooms.

I personally absolutely loved Clark Kerr. I think, really, the only "bad" thing about it is the fact that it's far from campus (and, well, the fact that it's most expensive). It's something you'll get used to. Everything else about it is amazing. Great food, huge rooms, and I think the environment is great. There are people who like socializing (as in partying), and there are also people who prefer small groups of people just hanging out in the lounge.

does the distance from the campus get very inconvenient?

is it hard to get into Freeborn Hall?

as an entering freshman, does submitting my housing request earlier make any difference? (increase my chances?)

Submitting your housing request earlier makes no difference, as long as you submit it by the deadline.

Last year, I put freeborn double and freeborn triple as my top two choices. I got bowles.

is it hard to get a mini suite in the units?
