This is not really a dorm question, but I read that dorms have a land line phone we are required to have and pay for. No problem. But what cell service(s) are better at Cal and around the area?? I currently have Cingular but if it's not going to work maybe I should change. Another question, is there a bank that has ATM's on campus or very close by?
Thanks for your help.

I have Verizon and I've never had a problem with reception. I've heard that Cingular sometimes has problems, but I'm not too sure.

Also, there's an ATM right at Golden Bear Cafe, which is near Sather Gate. There's also a Bank of America a block down and a Wells Fargo 10 seconds away from Sather Gate.

By the way, what the dorms have is a land line, but you do have to bring your phone (if you want to make use of the land line); either way you have to pay.

I have verizon and I've never had a problem w/ reception either.

There's a Washington Mutual and Bank of America ATM on campus, and many nearby

Thanks very much for the help. The details........

- Units (substance abuse free) are these sought after or do people avoid these?

Should I ask for triples at Clark-Kerr or is that still unfeasable?

The one building that is substance, not substance-abuse, free, is Freeborn, and I think everyone who requests it pretty much gets in. most people don't avoid them, but it seems that the Freeborn people are often more eccentric, and that there's a greater concentration of religious people (not that many, but just a little more than the other buildings). I have limited experience with Freeborn people, but this is what I've felt.

I think Clark Kerr triples are possible to get, but difficult to get.

I think the land line thing is accurate. I've had t-mobile and the only problem is in the mini suites themselves (made of concrete and steel). Some buildings also don't seem to allow my phone to get a signal.

Bank of America is right South of campus. Many other banks are nearby.

DRab: So T Mobile doesn't really get reception inside the CKC mini suites?

No idea. I'm speaking about the unit Minute suites. You have to lean near the window so that the concrete and steel don't interfere. The CKC "mini suite" like rooms I think are called suites, maybe not, but I don't have experience with them and cell phones.

I'm thinking of Foothil's quad suites (2 people per room, 4 rooms in a suite). Anyone have experience in these?

(I'm a frosh Regent's Scholar)

of the three units, which one is the cleanest and most spacious?

Hmmm. With regards to the general outside area, inside buildings, individual rooms, hallways, lounges?

as in the bathrooms and individual dorms

Is it true that it is first-come first-served after you submit your SIR? I still haven't submitted mine because I want to go to CAL day first, but I really do not want to stay at Stern. Is it a possibility I will receive that as my dorm?

no they assign everyone a lottery number and as long as you turn it in by 11:59 May 5th you receive the same opportunitiy as the person who turned in their housing sheet March 30th.

vivi06 -- Unit 1 and 2 are cleaner/nicer than Unit 3. I've heard Unit 2's buildings inside / outside are nicer than Unit 1, but Unit 2 is in a slightly seedier area

1)What are the location and bathroom differences between Unit 1 and 2?

2) Having just seen pictures, isn't the outside of Unit 1 much nicer (Pretty and colorful high rises instead of gray cement slabs)?

Units 1 and 2 are almost identical, except for location. Unit 2 is one more block away from campus than unit 1.

Location- Very similar. Unit I is one block, closer to stuff. At night, it makes going to Top Dog, la Burriata (eh . . .), or the Asian Ghetto that much easier.

http://www.berkeley.edu/map/maps/EF56.html

Bathrooms? Similar. Which building your in matters and changes things.

From the outside, hmm. I think that Unit 2 has some more colorful high rises. Really, I don't think that they're that different from the outside.

Can't find one for Unit 2. If you like one, than request it. shrug

i think i'm gonna opt for a unit 1 double or CKC... my questions are:

-what is the study environment like in the units?
-is it hard for freshmen to get into the new unit 1 and 2 minisuites?
-are the new minisuites social?

Study environment? The units are closer to the library. There are lounges every two floors in the high rises.

I don't think any Freshman are going to be in the mini-suites next year. I'm not sure, though. Each floor has two lounges, one "study lounge," and one "lounge." Both end up gettin used for studying (or cell phone conversations).

The design of the mini-suites is less social because there is more space in between people, fewer people, and no floor-wide bathroom-sharing.

I really want to dorm in unit 1 or 2 next year as a freshman

is dorming in a triple for unit 1 or 2 better than dorming a double in clark kerr (it's wayyy too far away)??
