Official Dormitory Thread (calling current students!)

How is housing determined? I mean..is it first come first serve orrr random?

oceangomute - housing is random lottery

so we cannot match roommates by major?

You submit five choices, and all received before the deadlined are given random lottery numbers (Regents scholars get some sort of boost). Housing tries to match people up with their requests and roommates, and then you find out what your offer is. You can email them to ask for a change, and many a person have been successful through this way.

after the deadline for the housing app, when do the offers usually come back?

Unsure.

..........

Thanks a lot. I should have read the entire post because everyone asked the same question. I know it's obviously a random lottery but for those of you current students, did you personally get the first choice you wanted?
I know I can't really base your experiences of getting which dorms first but I'm a little bit worried...

And, Unit 1 or Unit 2 as my top choice? I went to Unit 2's and their triples really weren't too bad...I thought UCLA's was by far worse. But, they both kind of seem similar, from the outside anyway.

I got my first choice, and many of my friends did, too. I know a few people who did not, though.

And definitely, the dorms that I've seen at Berkeley trump UCLA's.

can someone please give a brief cumulative summary comparing Units 1,2,3.
right now i am thinking:
1- unit 1 double
2- unit 2 double
3- unit 1 triple
4- unit 2 triple
5- unit 3 double
(from what i have read on this thread most people seem to favor Units 1,2 over Unit 3 because of distance from telegraph ST.and too much noise but is Unit 3 really that bad?)

i have toured units 1,2 on cal day but i didnt get a chance to see unit 3.

Do the triples in Clark Kerr (not mini-suite style) consist of bunk beds or separate beds like those in the doubles in Clark Kerr?

I'm curious as to how different the buildings within each Unit can be. I've seen most group 1 and 2 as being very similar and 3 being the older of the bunch, but I am also seeing people refer to specific buildings as being very different within the Units. I stayed overnight in Unit 1 in Cheney this past weekend, would that building be representative of Unit 1 and 2 or how much does it vary?

The highrise bldgs in Unit 1 & 2 are pretty much the same (not the minisuites though, but you'll almost not get one for sure)

are there kitchens in unit 1 and 2 for cooking?

QS - Quad Room in Suite
TS - Triple Room in Suite

That means that (Quad) there are 4 double rooms within a suite and (Triple) there are 3 double rooms within a suite, right? That does NOT mean that it is a suite with 4 or 3 people in a room, RIGHT? :</p>

Someone said this before and I still want an answer too. Please help us

any opinions about the co-ops? ive already searched on the forum but still need more info.

Each co-op has a different feel. You need to visit the co-ops yourself and make a judgment because no one here would be able to tell you how each co-op's environment is and such. Some are rowdy, some are quiet. IMO it's a really good place to live. Cheap and affordable housing plus lots of amenities.

So all the regular rooms in Units 1 and 2 are the highrise buildings? Where are the mini suites?

Ok, so to answer a question in a post 3-4 people before mine, who quoted my old question. I asked at Cal Day, and
QS means 4 people per ROOM in a suite

You cannot choose how many rooms there will be in your suite, only how many people will be in your immediate room.

:D

wait... so... why would i choose a room with 4 ppl in it... that's a lot. Not sure I'm getting what you said. And... how easy is it to get your first choice? I really want Foothill. and put double, triple and quad as my first 3 choices.

cooking in any housing???

Yeah I think the units have like a small kitchen downstairs or something...I think Foothill has a kitchen downstairs too.
