Best of luck to those accepted. Keep the faith for those deferred. I’m genuinely sorry for those rejected.

My son was also rejected, and reading these posts it is difficult to see why. Many have been accepted that have lower scores and grades. Many were rejected with higher. In the end most have equal ECs. And, son did have an impact… Strange process, but son is less upset than I expected. We’ll see what happens next, and the door is open for his other amazing schools that also interested him.

Good Luck everyone!!

^yesreally,

That’s the epitome of the difference between SAT I and ACT scores unless that score is out of 1600 in which case, good job >.<

Previous Poster–
I am assuming that her SAT score was out of 1600–there’s no need to undermine the ACT. If the two tests were so different in terms of difficulty, why does almost every college and university in the country accept the two equally?

Let’s try to keep this thread about ED decisions and not snarky comments.

Hey guys. Current student at Duke University. I am happy for everyone that got in, and terrible sorry for everyone that didn’t. Especially for those who had a great profile. But truth be told, about 320 applicants last year were rejected and they had a perfect score! And more than that were valedictorian at their school (with just as great profiles and a great SAT score). It’s not that SAT scores aren’t everything, but it’s also in the application submitted. The counselor’s are GREAT at telling if the school is right for you. I do not know how they do it, but they just KNOW a Duke student when they read their application. I also do not know what they said this year in the acceptance/deferral/rejected letters, but do believe what they said, they honestly do go through each application MANY times. It can start off with your selective region in your state, then your state, then your national region, then the nation, and so forth. You guys are GREAT STUDENTS, otherwise you would not have had the courage to apply to such a great school. It’s not that Duke did not see that, they just know that there is something else out there that maybe fits you better. I just took a road trip to visit Columbia U and Brown U. I got into Columbia, but did not apply to Brown. The friend that I was with applied and got rejected to both (and had never visited). And he told me later that he was glad he didn’t get in ED for Columbia (he had gone off the impression of it being an Ivy and being just so great) because he honestly did not like that school for reasons here and there(neither did I, now the reason why I am at Duke). But the point of this is to tell you guys to not get flustered by the false impression that Duke just DIDN’T want you, it’s that they felt you had something that maybe a different college would appreciate more. Keep your hopes up, you guys will find something worth it. I mean, you guys have 4 years in college, and trust me; they go by fast. As Robert Frost said “In three years I can sum up everything I’ve learned about life” It goes on". You guys are great people, and many people don’t apply to colleges for the fear of getting rejected. You guys surpassed that fear, and obtained that result. That shows your integrity, your courage, and most importantly, that you are willing to put yourself (and your emotions) in the line of battle for something (hopefully) better. You guys still have much to go ahead of you for senior year. Don’t let this get you down. Enjoy high school, and best of luck to all of your future endeavors.

I had a close high school friend go to Duke. She did not amount to much after college. While Duke is a nice school, it really is up to the student.

I attended a college that was barely in the Top 100 but now run one of the faster growing Tech companies in the Rocky Mountains (so what…I know). The point is this – it is less important where you go to college (specifically, undergrad!) and more important as to kicking butt when you are the school that you ultimately attend.

Out of my pretty mediocre school, there were 6 classmates who went to Harvard Law or HBS. That obviously set us up for life.

I am certain you are disappointed, but the amazing news is there are literally 100’s, if not 1,000’s, of schools from which you can still achieve everything you dream to be or do. I am looking at Duke for my daughter (a Junior now) and if that does not happen for her, she can still have a great life going to a ton of other great schools.

I am living evidence of that.

Good luck.

^^^ While the advice above is 100% true, Duke has changed a lot in the 20 or 30 years since your high school friend went: [Duke Magazine-Top of the Crop by Jacob Dagger-January/February 2006](<a href=“Duke Mag”>Duke Mag)

This doesn’t negate the truth of the advice above, though. No matter where you go, you’ll have to work hard for it to pay off.

^daughter

Sorry if I came off as snarky. I wasn’t undermining the ACT in any way at all. I see both the SAT and ACT as legitimate standardized tests – in fact, I’ve taken both several times to maximize their potentials. I was merely pointing out the discrepancy between people’s performances on the separate tests. I was just pointing out that some people score exceptionally higher on the SAT than the ACT and vice versa (hence, a 1580/2400 vs. a 36/36).

But, I see now that it is most likely a 1580/1600 and 36/36. Sorry if I seemed to come off as a ■■■■■…

How do I know my financial aid? Is that out yet?

Congratulations to all who got in! Can’t wait to see you guys. :)

How do I know my financial aid? Is that out yet?

UGH. I waited for 1.5 yrs yesterday for this page to load and posted all my information, only to arrive at a frozen screen. Oh well. Here’s my decision:
Decision: Deferred
SAT: 2130 700M, 720 CR, 700 W
SAT II: 740 Chem, 720 Math I, 700 Lit
AP/IB: so-so
ACT: 33
GPA: UW- 3.85, W- 4.58, 4.0 UW (straight A’s) senior year 1st quarter
Rank: 5/326
Awards: NMSF
CC’s: decent amount of activities, only two small leadership positions
Recs: Great!
Essays: Great! Especially my Why Duke? one… it was REALLY creative, I thought
Volunteering/summer- 270+ in hospital and w/ children; won scholarhsip to attend community college summer art camp, started swimming/taekwondo recently
Others: sent in art supplement, interview was… meh…

Overall pretty weak stats/CC/leadership. I also had a downward grade trend from 9-11th grade (darn you AP Chem!) Very good essays/recs/passion- it’s pretty clear I want to be a pediatrician/integrate art into my field through my activities and classes. I would say I showed a lot of… passion? Steadfastness? Commitment?I can’t think of the word right now. Anyways, I’ll be back later to post my profile for real, if I have time.
