Sorry - the formatting is wonky. I give up.

DS was accepted to Trinity, will major in Biology - also a beach lifeguard like you, coIIege.

Not sure if he’ll post stats later. Full IB diploma, most rigorous curriculum, 4.1 weighted aca. gpa, 33 ACT, AP Scholar w Honor, etc. Hundreds of volunteer hours and is an out-of-the-box thinker. Recognized at national level for one of the organizations he leads.

From a mom’s standpoint for future applicants: he came across on his application like a normal (albeit very bright, well-rounded) teenager with an incredible desire to attend Duke, and some deep volunteer and leadership projects, strong test scores and good gpa. Not afraid to say exactly what he thinks, question authority, and willing to put it all out there. Somewhat risky personal statement. Counselor and teachers wrote great recs, no doubt about it. My point would be: be yourself. Don’t try to impress the adcoms - let them figure out who you are. IMHO they seem to be doing a good job of that, and that’s one of the reasons why kids are clamoring to go to Duke.

No hooks - from an underfunded, huge public school - completely and totally prepared for rejection - and now happier than I have ever seen him in his life!

[] Job/Work Experience: Baby sitting
[] Volunteer/Community service: Part of my school’s curriculum, every Wednesday for 2 hours, knitting baby hats for hospitals, organizing a blanket making event for the homeless
[] EC short answer (subject and personal opinions on it): Mine was about my experience with my African-American affinity group, and how being able to withdraw and discuss the struggles and laughs that come with being a female of color in a majority white private school and in the general society helped me grow. I tried really hard to not sound like an angry Black woman, but it definitely wasn’t the most captivating part of my writing.
[] General Essay (subject and personal opinions on it): I think that it is one of my best pieces of writing ever. It’s an edited version of a memoir I wrote, which I subsequently used for my senior speech and college essay. I wrote about my hair, and how growing up around people whose hair behaved itself a lot more than mine did produced some self-love issues that I had to overcome. Of course I ended with how I overcame and an india.arie reference…
[] Second Essay (subject - and personal opinions on it): I wrote about how much Duke has done for my family (the school helped my parents escape from a civil war) and how it reminded me, in all the best ways, of my high school. Pretty good, but couldn’t top my general essay.
[] Teacher Recommendations (only if you saw it): I didn’t see them, but I have a really good relationship with both teachers and they’re both brilliant, so I’m assuming that they were great.
[] Counselor Rec (only if you saw it): I have no idea
[] Additional Rec (only if you saw it): It was the one needed for an art supplement, and it was very well done.
[] Interview: It was very fun. If we had met in college, I think the two of us would’ve been friends…and I just had to sing for her…secret weapon wink [/ul]

[*] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I can’t really tell you, because I’m still honestly surprised that I got in…all I did was scream and cry when I saw, “Congratulations.” Kids at school were telling me that they remembered when I told them in first grade that I was going to Duke. So this is a lifelong dream coming true for me and I am beyond excited to see all of you next year…we’re gonna TEAR IT UP!!! [/ul]
