Decision: Accepted w/Likely
Trinity College of Arts & Sciences

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2210 (770CR 690M 750WR 8E). First and only time I took it.
[] ACT: 34 composite (35E, 30M, 36R, 33S, 9 essay)
[] SAT II (if submitted): 800 Bio M, 740 Chem, 740 Lit
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 94.7 UW at my high school, which I think translates to a 3.9. 3.88 for my college work (two Bs last semester).
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 8/330 weighted (what my school uses for val/sal). 2/330 unweighted. My weighted rank dropped since my high school doesn’t weight college courses.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): World History (5), Human Geography (5)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):
[] Senior Year Course Load: Microeconomics, Microbiology, Physics, Biology, Statistics, Linear Algebra, Spanish, a graduate-level English/film course, American Government. They’re all college courses.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Bronze medal at ISWEEEP, National Achievement and Merit (only semifinalist at time of application), some other science fair awards, STAR Student (highest SAT in my school), prestigious merit scholarship at the university I take classes at.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Intramural ultimate frisbee, soccer, flag football, and softball (2 years), yearbook executive (2 years), ambassador for my school (1 year), microbiology and neuroscience research (3 years), a Nigerian cultural organization (4 years), a leadership program run by my county (1 year), JV basketball (2 years)
[] Job/Work Experience: None at time of application.
[] Volunteer/Community service: I’ve worked with local refugees for 2 years.
[] Essays: Common App- I wrote about my interest in Japanese and Korean music lol. Sounds lame, but it seems to be working. It’s not the best thing ever written, because creative writing isn’t my forte, but it showed my appreciation of diversity and world cultures and my sense of humor. Also did Why Duke? and the research essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Should be good. Both from professors.
[] Counselor Rec: Should also be good. She knows me very well.
[] Additional Rec: Didn’t send.
[] Interview: Didn’t turn my app in time for one.
[/ul]Other[ul]

[/ul]General Comments: BSAI was soooo fun, but Yale has always been my #1, and the money is right. Looks like I’ll be going there.

Accepted: BC (Honors), but so expensive that I can’t afford. So essentially I didn’t get into any school
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies?[/li]The results rendered the order of the decisions meaningless.

[/ul]General Comments: I honestly wanted Duke the most and I tried to convey that in my essays, but I guess it wasn’t successful. Hopefully the yield doesn’t go too high this year and they’ll have some mercy on the waitlistees.

Decision: Waitlisted

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, GPA, Rank, ECs
[] Weaknesses: Location and Ethnicity
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I have no clue… I was really hoping for an acceptance here… I got a likely from UVA…
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted: UVA SEAS, Georgia Tech Engineering. Rejected: Yale. Waitlisted: Johns Hopkins.
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? Before, I guess.
[/li]

[/ul]
General Comments:
Just kinda crappy that I only got accepted at UVa… I’m the top student from my region, to be honest… I just guess it’s the lack of opportunity I get around here that’s kept me from really bolstering my record. I’ve done everything I could. Sometimes I wish I knew what the admissions officers are thinking as they read the applications.

[] Strengths: test scores, extracurriculars (they’re much more in-depth than I care to list right now)
[] Weaknesses: GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted: My application strengths were very different from those of other students from my school. I exhibited strengths in leadership that are very different from the average applicant from my area, and I think it stood out in the end.

[] State (if domestic applicant): NY
[] School Type: Public, somewhat competitive
[] Ethnicity: White/Jewish
[] Gender: M
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, research, etc.): Intel, Legacy
[/ul]Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Grades, Intel
[] Weaknesses: Lack of well-roundedness/community service/really interesting or stand-out ECs
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Because I wasn’t a good enough applicant
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted: Accepted- Rice, WUSTL, Chicago, JHU (denied BME), Cornell, Carnegie Mellon, Emory, BU (full-tuition scholarship), a few others; Waitlisted- Columbia, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Princeton; Rejected- Yale, MIT
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? Before, but doesn’t really matter
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments: Duke was one of my top choices, and the decision did sting, but this decision is only a minor setback. I feel fortunate to have such an array of choices (leaning towards Rice right now), and I’ll be staying on the waitlists for Duke and a couple of other schools. Either way, Duke has not seen the last of this applicant, and in 4 years, hopefully they will make the right decision.
Congratulations to all who were accepted!

[] Strengths: SAT I, debate, good essays and teacher recs, legacy, from Montana (gotta count for something)
[] Weaknesses: Not the best ECs, SAT IIs, AP scores
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: The legacy might have helped me get a likely, but I don’t think it was what got me in. Twas probably the good test scores, awesome recs, and good essays (that showed my love of Duke).
[] Where else were you accepted/rejected/waitlisted:

Waitlisted: Yale, Brown
[li] Would you rather have seen your Duke decision after or before Ivies? [/li]I was extremely happy to receive a likely letter, it alleviated so much pressure (especially today when I got rejected/waitlisted by all the ivies I applied to). So seeing the decision before was a very good thing.

[/ul]General Comments:

 1. Unless I get in off of Yale’s waitlist I’m looking forward to being a Blue Devil next year!
 2. It’s interesting that I got a likely from Duke but got rejected/waitlisted nearly everywhere else. Guess Duke saw something in me that no one else did (and I appreciate them for that).
