can someone post the deferred and rejection letters?

I am writing to let you know that the Admissions Committee has decided to defer its decision on your application for admission to Duke University until April 2005.

I understand that this is disappointing news, but I want to assure you that your application remains under serious consideration and we will carefully review your file again this spring.

This deferral means that you have been released from your Early Decision commitment to Duke. In the time between now and early April, when you receive our final decision, you should complete applications to other institutions. I do encourage you to pursue other options, and I would like to explain why it makes sense for you to consider other colleges seriously.

This year we received 1,500 Early Decision applications. We admitted fewer than one-third of our Early Decision applicants, and deferred decisions on about half. The fact that you applied under our Early Decision program and that Duke is your first choice will certainly still be taken into consideration as we review your candidacy this spring. At the same time, given the typical size and strength of our Regular Decision applicant pool, we anticipate that in April we will be able to admit only about ten percent of the Early Decision applicants whose decisions were deferred.

Since we limit the number of places we offer students in the Early Decision process to fewer than a third of the entering class, we are forced to defer many students who have very real potential. The competition to become a Duke student is keener than ever, and your application remains active in a process that has already excluded several hundred very talented students from further consideration. You may ask why we defer so many students when we will be able to accept relatively few in April. The answers are several. Sometimes we want some more information about an applicant – fall term grades, for example. Sometimes we want to consider an applicant within the context of the larger Regular Decision pool. And sometimes we just want to give a student with a strong interest in Duke one more chance in the admission process.

Other than ensuring that we receive your Midyear School Report and the results of December or January SAT or ACT tests, you do not need to supplement your file unless we have informed you that it is incomplete. Feel free, however, during January, February, or early March to keep us abreast of any significant developments in your life, academic or otherwise. We will fully evaluate your application again this spring so that we can be sure not to miss anything.

I hope that I have provided you with an adequate explanation of our deferral process. If you have any questions, please feel free to call our office and ask to speak with the admissions officer responsible for applications from your state or country.

You have my best wishes for a productive and successful senior year. I truly appreciate your interest in Duke.

ahh please dont make me see that...

sry he asked

Damn it Deferred 1320 650, 720, 750 3.8 GPA

rejected...if anyone needs me, i'll be on the emory forums...but here's my letter for those who actually wanna read it...

It is with very great regret that I must tell you that we will not be able to offer you a place in the class entering Duke University next fall.

I know there is nothing that I can say that will ease your disappointment, particularly given the strong interest you have shown in Duke by applying under our Early Decision program, but I would like to explain a little bit about our decision.

In the Early Decision process this year, we received 1,500 applications for 470 places we reserve for Early Decision applicants. The students who applied were exceptional in many ways, and each application was read and fully evaluated separately by at least two staff members before being discussed by the full Admissions Committee.

Most of the students denied admission in December – as in April – have strong academic and personal qualifications, and there is no doubt that almost all of them would be successful students at Duke. You may be wondering therefore why your application was not deferred to our April decision pool. We decided, regrettably, knowing the size and scope of our Regular Decision applicant pool, that we would not have been able to offer you admission in April. And we wanted to let you know this sooner rather than later so that you could focus your energies on applying to other good colleges.

The extraordinary strength and large number of our applicants makes the selection process – even in Early Decision – extremely competitive. I hope it may be of some comfort to know that you are in very good company.

It’s especially hard for me to deliver this message to an applicant for Early Decision, since you have expressed such a strong interest in attending Duke. I know that you have great potential for much success, and I am confident that you will achieve that success in college and beyond. You have my best wishes as you continue your senior year and for the remainder of your college search. I truly appreciate that we were your first choice.

I was accepted. I changed to Pratt in mid Nov. I'm ecstatic, my mom began screaming with happiness.
Wow, I really wasn't expecting this, I'm so happy now. I look forward to actually seeing all of you in Durham.
