Hurray Duke!

I went through all my Duke college stuff and I realized that the amount of Duke fliers/brochures/etc. that I have more than double those of the rest of my colleges >.>

Yeah, Duke is good stuff.

I have no hard copy Duke promotional materials. Do they send them to internationals?

Yeah they do. I got a lot of huge packets from them via snail mail that looked really nice.

I have gotten lots of stuff from no-name colleges but out of the ones I’m applying to Duke definitely wins out. I assumed it was because I basically live in their backyard but perhaps not.

^Weren’t you accepted to Chicago already? What I wouldn’t give to trade places man.

I actually haven’t gotten that many materials from Duke… Well, whatever. Shockingly enough, my app is actually in ahead of deadline. Now if only that could happen to my other schools. :P

Hey guys I’m from Michigan applying RD. I think I am looking at Econ…? Question, sorry in advance because I’m sure this has been answered many times but do you all know when decisions will be posted online? Again, I’m sure this has been discussed but I’m too lazy to search for it haha. Good luck everyone!!

^I believe march 31/april 1? at least thats what most colleges are

For some reason I thought it was like March 23rd or something around there?

^The Duke website says by early April, but I think it will be by late March

@srrinath - Yeah I was. I really don’t know where I’ll end up though; Duke is a little warmer and much closer to home, and I got zero in financial aid from Chicago so I probably won’t be going there (though I guess I’m not expecting much more from Duke).

^ Go to Duke if you want any semblance of a social life. You’ll still find intellectuals who like to sit around talking about philosophy in their spare time, but you’ll also find parties…and people who enjoy going to them lol.

FWIW, this isn’t a rude, bigoted stereotype. Chicago sells T-shirts that proudly state, “Where Fun Comes to Die!” They’re not exactly shy about it haha

one of my friends was talking about his friend who goes to duke who said that there are basically two “cliques” at duke. greek or not greek. and supposedly he said that either you’re in a frat/sorority or you don’t have a social life.

i dont believe this because i think theres great social life at duke and my friend who was telling me this has very extreme views… so does anyone with experience wanna back me up?

^I’m not Greek and I go out a decent amount. I think your friend has an extreme, extremeeeee view and probably needs to just go out and make some friends. A lot of kids aren’t in the Greek system (only 20ish% of guys are in a frat), and there’s no way that almost 80% of guys don’t have a social life. Only ~35% of Duke students go Greek - it’s really not that much.

And the cool thing about Duke frats is that they are open, which is unique to Duke. Most of my friends at other schools have to either be invited or bring a tonnn of girls to get in to a frat party, but everyone is pretty chill at Duke about that. And even if you don’t even ever want to go to frat parties, there are always other things to do. There are a ton of clubs right near campus. There are always a ton of people just chilling, watching movies, talking, pigging out, etcetc. Duke has a lot of stuff going on and it’s up to you to take the initiative to go out there and take advantage of it.

PS: Even though I am not in a frat, I have a lot of friends who are in a frat. Those cliques aren’t really as defined as some people may see them.

@ eatsalot
yea thanks thats what i mostly heard. one question: does being in a frat require you to give up a lot of your time?

Not really? Guys who are in a frat live together (girls in a sorority don’t have to live together), and so that kind of thing is something you have to either “give up” or “gain,” depending on how you look at it. Being in the frat ITSELF is not really time consuming. It really depends on how involved you want to be with you frat. Some frats have sports stuff, random events, meetings, etcetc, to which you may choose to go to one event or all events. It’s really up to you.

Merry Christmas.
