When DS didn't have an EA decision by Jan 1, we called right away. Adcom said, "oh yeah, he's accepted, sorry we didn't notify you" - about a week or so later a letter appeared including scholarship.

kgswm06. Way to go, kid. Outstanding record. Do you have a favorite? I'd be very interested to know.

Trustee's scholarship 25,700. Apply Ohio Leadership Awards Program (OLAP)

are both of you early action? asking cause some people have gotten decisions as PPSP candidates.

PPSP applicant and got the letter couple days ago.

do you know if your scholarship is for one year or per year (as in 25,000 per year)? Does it say in the letter? Is it always/usually per year? Or might it be 25,000 over four years? How is it that Case has so much money to give?

I applied PPSP, so do they mail all Case decision letters for PPSP candidates at the same time? I live in MS so it might take a while.

LOL. Trustee's is $25,700 renewable for 3 more years.

does the amount of merit aid you get affect how much need-based aid you receive?

Yes. It works like this . COA $42,000. EFC of A) $10,000 or B) $30,000. Merit award of $20,000. You subtract the merit award from COA first. $42,000 - $20,000 = $22,000 remaining COA. Now you have $22,000 but in A) your EFC is only $10,000. So the remainder of your package will be need aid which will probably include a small grant, work study, and loans down the $10,000 which will come from you or your parents. In B) The merit award reduces the COA to $22,000 which is below your EFC of $30,000. There is no more aid because there is no established, recognized need remaining (but if you submit the Fafsa you can get an unsubsidized Stafford loan of $2625 first year). Everything above assumes that Case will meet 100% of need.

People get confused and think they can subtract the need aid first , then use the merit to pay the remaining EFC. Nope. But it would be sweet.

Decision: Accepted

Stats:
SAT I: didn't take too seriously (not much emphasis on SAT in Ohio) But I think it was 1820 cum.
SAT IIs: none
ACT: 28
GPA: 4.423
Rank: 5/432
Other stats: 6 AP classes, all with 4 or 5 on the test

Subjective:

Essays: great, but not fantastic
Extracirriculars: tons of community service, NHS, numerous leadership positions and awards, academic teams, debate, etc.
Teacher Recs: decent, sent in more than needed
Counselor Rec: excellent, he's got the students at the bottom of the alphabet, and I'm probably one of his best.
Hook (if any): not sure, possibly my dentist, or an undergrad at Case now

Location/Person:

State or Country: Massillon, OH (but from Jackson local SD, not Massillon schools)
School Type: suburban public (1900 total, about 450 in my class)
Ethnicity: caucasian
Gender: male
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses:
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: certainly not my test scores (which really suprised me for Case). I'd have to say the school I'm from (one of the best in the state), class ranking, and community service
Other Factors: can't think of any
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:
To be honest, I was suprised to get in, esp. looking everyone else's test scores, but I guess they don't always mean everything.
