A lot of you seem extremely confident in your writing ability.

Do they just not reject people EA? I haven't talked to anybody, in real life or on any internet community, who was rejected.

This was my first acceptance, and it feels really good. U Chicago is a great school with really strong programs in both the sciences and the humanities. My first choice, however, is MIT. I was deferred there, but if I'm admitted, that's where I'll go.

No interview here as well.

Didn't really wanna go, more to see if I could get in. I guess Uchicago could see that.

"DanielSH, I'll be blunt: I think your GPA killed you and I don't think it's recoverable for you and Chicago. You really can't spin it that high GPA's are Stepford Students; what adcoms will see with your combo of high test scores and low GPA is 'talented slacker.'

"Schools a couple of notches down will be willing to take a chance on you because you'll help raise their stats but schools in the top tier--of which Chicago is one--are going to pass. Where else are you applying?"

I'm sure that you're right, but I continue to hope that Chicago will find something good. At the moment, I'm looking at (in no particular order) Reed, Macalester, Muhlenberg, Haverford, Carleton, Vassar, and Bard. Some of those are also "reach" schools, I realize, but I think one or two of them might be within my range.

Honestly, I don't know what to realistically shoot for. Maybe you have some better ideas?

You should be okay for one of these four: Carleton, Reed, Macalester, Vassar. Not ALL four, but probably one or two of them. Dunno what Muhlenberg is.

Haverford is probably your long shot.

danielsh--you sound a little like my son who is at Chicago now. He was waitlisted at Chicago and his GC told him he was lucky to be waitlisted with his grades. He is smart, was the top of his class in math in high school, and a good writer, but not motivated to do well in classes he wasn't interested in, or classes with homework assignments that he did not feel were worth doing. He did get in off the waitlist, but I have to say that his grades were higher than yours. The only thing I can say is, they did see something they liked or you would have been rejected, not deferred. So, even though I think your chances are slim, the best thing you can do is get good grades your last semester in school. And if you do anything noteworthy, let them know! I would also add a true safety or two to your list, just in case none of the schools you are looking at pan out. You may get into one of them (I'm thinking Reed or Muhlenberg may be willing to take a chance on you), but it is not a sure thing. Pacific Lutheran and University of Puget Sound are two schools that accepted my other (oldest son) with a GPA similar to yours (just slightly higher).

I think your application has to be pretty bad to be thrown in the EA reject pile.

I agree...they only reject like the worst 2% EA.

o hell yes i thought they accepted or deferred all. I feel better about myself now. Thanks a lot guys.

Even a school with as many applicants as brown rejects much more infrequently than defers...they deferred something like 65 percent of their applications. Being deferred means the school was probably quite a reach.

no i don't agree with u at all.

it makes sense that schools would defer everyone they might remotely consider, that's just protecting themselves, as harsh as it is to defer people who then have to wait painfully for a highly possible rejection or spot on the waitlist

I agree with that.

g0ldplatinum, if you didnt want to go, why'd you apply? if you don't mind my asking...

I think Daniel is close to a slam dunk at Muhlenberg. Not a bad school but not nearly so brutal in selectivity as the others.

reed isnt brutal, they really give the impression of being "not about the numbers", much more so than chicago.

hey, erin from texas, have you heard? here's hoping!
