Mintie - I concur. I'm looking at these people and being like, "How the f*** did I ever get in?" haha.

I think it was the intangibles about me, I guess, considering my stats were by far not the best, though they were decent. I emphasized learning for the love of learning and intellectual curiousity in my app and interview, and also how everything I did was of my own choice and not influenced by what my parents wanted me to do. (Let's just say - gay rights work has never gone over well with them.)

I think it was the intangibles about me, I guess,<<

Exactly. Identical stats does not mean identical applicants. There are two big subjective considerations that are not reflected in these stats: the content of the essay and the content of the recs. No two applicants are exactly alike.

Plus a third important factor is What the School is Looking For. In other words, which slots do they need to fill? Do they have an excess of French horn players but are looking for bassoonists? Well lucky for you if you're the bassoonist who happens to have the same outstanding stats as the French horn player.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I liked them a lot, as did others
[] Teacher Recs: Quite good, although definitely not stellar: both basically said I don't contribute much in class
[] Counselor Rec: Incredible (at my school, our 'counselors' know students better than teachers so this would have carried more weight I think)
[] Hook (if any): None
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: UK
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: White/Chinese
[] Gender: M
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths - international background, big interest/passion in China, I tried to give my application a sense of direction. Weaknesses - to put it bluntly, my ECs are **** lol
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Weak ECs, not an excellent student in class, no real all-consuming passion (eg two guys from my school who got accepted: one is a genius at both academics and music, he has lessons during morning breaks etc; the other rows for Great Britain)[/li][/ul]Other Factors: General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Congrats to everyone accepted - good job. Bad luck to deferrals/rejections, and good luck in the second round for those who have that chance. Otherwise, time to move on! I have faith in these people - if we're not right for them, I think they have a pretty good way of telling. See it as a blessing in disguise (or try at least :))

That is EXACTLY what my interviewer told me. Exactly.

Ok, I got deffered. But seriously I don't know what to do with deferral...should we send another completely different application with new essays or should we just add some information like test scores, school reports and new awards??? thank you. :(
