*Official EA Thread Class of 2016*

My son’s college counselor shared the same information with us. He received an email from admissions explaining there was a 13% increase in EA applications and “As a result of this increase and our desire to balance the admission opportunities for Regular Decision applicants, we are planning to offer admission to a smaller percentage of EA applicants this year.”

All your counselors should have received this email. Ask them about it.

Comparing selectivity of NU and U Mich is not a particularly helpful exercise. You are comparing apples and oranges. Michigan is a state university required by law to admit a certain percentage of in-state students some of whom (but certainly not all - lots of talented kids live in Michigan) may have lower statistics (gpas, SATs etc) that skew certain averages lower. For sure though because they must take a certain number of in state, their admit rate will always look higher. Michigan is also an enormous school with some programs that are incredibly selective (worse than you’d find at some ivies) and others that are less so. That is what makes it such a great place for so many people.

NU on the otherhand is a private school with no such requirement to fill out a percentage of their ranks with Massachusetts residents. They have more freedom to decide who they make offers to can look statistically more selective because they are not under any pressure with respect to where they pull their candidates from.

Both are wonderful schools overall with pockets of greatness and brilliance in many of their programs. (I’m an NU grad but also involved with Michigan at the moment). You should do cartwheels if you get into either one and not spar over selectivity nor rankings. It has no impact whatsoever on what is or is not about to happen with your application. That ship has sailed.

Best of luck to all of you.

Hey Everyone!

This is my first post on here, I just had to join because I really wanted to get into Northeastern and I wanted to be a part of all of this excitement haha. Best of luck to everyone!

So scared for Thursday!!

Also, I have heard (and I read something in the Princeton Review Best 373 College Book) that EA for Northeatern is mainly a numbers based decision. Like they make cuts based on numbers and don’t look at much else, since they have so many applicants? Anyway, that’s just what I’ve heard, which is really freaking me out. Anyione know something about this??

@mo1234567

No way. Every college always considers ECs, Awards, Recommendations, etc.
That would be really unfair to everyone. Numbers are important but other stuff are important as well for any type of decision/school.

mo,

I doubt it. NEU looks at the whole person :), and welcome to CC!!

Hi, my dd applied to Northeastern EA. Her high school weighted average is 104.86 and unweighted is about 95. She is ranked in the top 10% of her class. Super score SAT is 2000/2400, 620 CR, 780 M, 600 W and a 29 ACT. Tons of EC with leadership roles, very active in the community. LOR should be great. What are her chances?

By the way, Thursday (providing that is the true date), can not come soon enough!

Good of BUandBC82 to share that email info that was sent by NU to the school counselor. I do not read this as NU saying that they are admitting fewer EA candidates this year than last. (They could be but that is not what the email says). They will automatically have a lower admit rate if they admit the same actual number of students through EA that they did last year but have an increase in the number of EA applications. (Or in math terms: The numerator - number of admits - stays the same but the denominator - number of EA applicants - is larger and thus the admit % rate is lower).

My point is, if you know you are already totally a fit for NU and submitted a great application, I wouldn’t sweat the news. If you are clearly a good fit for NU, a lower EA admit rate will not matter.

Thanks for the reassurance guys…

Looks like I’ll be seeeing all of you here Thursday as we panic about getting our decisions.

Dont be worried they said that my social security # wasnt entered and its on the common app! email Yvette Jusseaume, she helped me a ton and got it fixed right over the phone with me. Shes super nice

So they post the decision on the NEU “Application Status Check” Website?

I just realized that I completely forgot to turn in the CSS profile by Dec 1. Does that mean I won’t know if I have any scholarships by Thursday? Or since they aren’t need-based will I still find out by Thursday?

The financial aid deadline is february

It’s not mandatory - but if you wanted an estimate it says on the website:

“Early Action: Complete the PROFILE by December 1st for a tentative award.”

do they accept people differently based on what major a person is applying to

How will we be notified on EA decisions tomorrow? Will it show up when we log onto the NU Application status check page? It is full with so much info now. Wondering if that all gets replaced by decision info.

onecot aren’t you withdrawing your application? Did you not get into Wash u?

i’m pretty sure we hear tomorrow, who else is nervous as hell!!!

I am!

I really do love NEU :)

I am literally freaking out…
