Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: My unique extra-cirriculars, well rounded, essays

ambreylouise: really surprised that you were not admitted EA. From posts by others, you would get accepted and get merit scholarship. I think you will get in in RD. Perhaps you can call/email nicely to the admission about your interest in NE and ask questions about scholarship etc to gain a sense of why and better insurance that a mistake not made?

ebhelper: that’s really reassuring, thanks!! I honestly was pretty confused too, because I thought Northeastern was kind of a target for me. I want to email them, but will I sound annoying to them? Like if I question why I didn’t get in?

@ambreylouise

I think you should definitely call NEU to let them know that you’re still interested, but don’t badger about why you didn’t get in. Ask nicely if they received everything and check that they have all the SAT scores you sent.

And you’ll still get financial aid if you get accepted RD - that is, if you’re eligible.

@ambreylouise: Are you sure that your application was complete? Nothing missing?

Decision: Accepted to the 0,6 pharmd program

@TomSrOfBoston

Thinking about it makes me paranoid that I did forget part of my application, but I honestly don’t think that is the case.

[] Where else are you applying: Babson (denied), Tulane (deferred), Fordham (accepted), U New Haven (accepted), Bentley, UVermont, NYU-Poly, USC, Syracuse, Misc. CSUs & UCs.
[/ul]General Comments: I called the Admissions Counselor to ask about how I could strengthen my app, considering that NEU is my top choice, and was told me that the primary factor was my weak GPA. Asked about sending additional recs, etc. and was told that recs and ECs were both “highly rated.” Happy to be deferred because Fall Semester grades are rather decent (compared to previous semesters). Can demonstrate strong upward trend since Soph Year.

@Jack~ I must admit I found it ironic that you wrote about Ayn Rand, specifically mentioning that you side with Libertarian values, yet you applied for financial aid…

I see the irony too. I found it a bit hypocritical as I selected option as well. However, with the vast majority of grant-aid given out by the institution rather than the federal government - I can live with myself.

Decision: ACCEPTED

Objective:
SAT I: 2090
SAT II: Bio E: 660 Math 2: 690
Unweighted GPA: 3.7ish I think (our school doesn’t normally use GPAs)

Job/Work Experience: Tax office intern
Volunteer/Community service: A LOT of dance related activities, treasurer of student run charity, sunday school volunteer for 6+ years (hundreds of volunteer hours)
Summer Activities: taught english to these refugee kids one summer, interned the other
Essays: Honestly, when I read my common app essay it was a piece of crap LOL. NEU didn’t have any other essays so I guess I got lucky
Teacher Recommendation: SUPER good
Counselor Rec: Super good! Known him since grade 9! make sure to really get to know your guidance counselors!!

Other
Applied for Financial Aid?: Nope! But they gave me an international scholars scholarship of 15k/year! Totally surprised!

Intended Major: Political Sciences
State (if domestic applicant): N/A
Country: CANADAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA WOOHOOO
School Type: Religious (CAtholic)
Number of applicants from school: None
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, recruited athlete, legacy): None

Reflection
Strengths: EC’s and upward trend in grades (horrible graade 9 and 10 marks)
Weaknesses: standardized tests and grades, and my weird essay

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Honestly I think it was because I was an international student. NEU LOVESSSS international students. I mean with my marks alone, they weren’t worthy for NEU for sure. my EC’s were good, but nothing spectacular! So I suppose this success is also attributed to my teacher reccs

super grateful for this. the more I look at NEU, the more I love itt!!!

you said you had bad grades 9 and 10. please explain

in grade 9 my average was around 79%, grade 10 it was around 83%, and grade 11 it was 89%.

basically in grade 9 and 10 i didn’t try. thank god for those high grades in phys ed, music and other electives or else my average would’ve been a disaster.

my school only calculates GPA for the sake of applying to the US. so 80% and higher is a 4, 70-79% is a 3, and so forth.

hopefully this encourages others to apply!!!

@ambreylouise ~ my friend was deferred with almost identical stats. Her SATs were 2200 and her GPA just a tad lower than yours. Her intended major is communication and all her ECs support that. Like you, she is surprised.

A little late on the bandwagon but…
Congrats to everyone that got accepted:) I got ACCEPTED too!!!
Florida girl in the pharmD program!

@Sunny100 - I suppose we will just have to wait until March to find out!
