General Comments:* ...Hell yeah

Hey everyone! First post here. I was seriously expecting a flat-out rejection...overjoyed that I wasn't rejected! But still, no cigar yet.

Decision: Deferred

Objective:
[ul][li] Deferred EA? Yes.
[/li]

[] SAT I (breakdown):
1st time: 700 CR, 630 M, 590 W (devastated; I was expecting 700s for all)
2nd time: 730 CR, 710 M, 700 W (worked crazily on the writing section; I took one practice test the night before and got routinely destroyed by the CR and M sections...I actually got nearly 100% for the W though...didn't show in the actual test *sigh )
Overall: 2140.

[li] ACT: N/A
[/li]

[li] SAT II: 760 Physics, 730 Chemistry, 690 Molecular Biology (I missed the first half-year of Biology in Year 11 - your junior year; I was doing Music at the time >_<)
[/li]

[li] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): N/A - average of A/A?-
[/li]

[li] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 3/~180, probably tied with two others
[/li]

[li] AP (place score in parenthesis): None.
[/li]

[li] IB (place score in parenthesis): None.
[/li]

[li] Senior Year Course Load: [/li]Biology (topped)
Chemistry (topped)
Physics
English (compulsory)
Maths B
Accounting
English Extension (senior year only; entry by invitation if student has achieved minimum B+ in junior year; placed 4th)

[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):
I got Distinction in both the University of New South Wales Maths Competition and the Australian Westpac Maths Competition. We don't really participate in many competitions at our school.[/ul]
Subjective:
[ul][] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):
Chess - 7 years, in top team for five years (Vice-Captain). Was undefeated with 6/6 this year ^_^.
School Chamber Orchestra - four years (Lead 2nd Violin)
Debating -“ one year, 10.3 team
Amnesty International - one year, this year
Ad-hoc A capella group - one year, Year 10 (sophomore). The story about this is that lots of members kept on turning up late so the teacher got frustrated and discontinued it. I was lead baritone.

[li] Job/Work Experience:[/li]Worked at local travel agency for a week - they loved me.
Worked at local optometrist - a bit boring but I got to see how they manufacture lenses.

[li] Volunteer/Community service:[/li]School program - go out to local schools or community each year for a week; I went to the same school for three/four years - they loved me there.

[li] Summer Activities:[/li]Violin masterclass session over in China in 2005.
Maths prep for self in 2006 (I sucked at Maths throughout high school, rarely got anything above B+ until this year).

[li] Essays:[/li]One about subjectivity after reading '1984'.
One about music and cultural influence.

[li] Teacher Recommendation:[/li]One from Chem & Biol teacher - she loved me.
One from English & Eng Ext teacher - same.
I was lucky to have two teachers for four subjects - personal qualities show more clearly I think.

[li] Counselor Rec:[/li]Was housemaster for five years, saw me through my tribulations.

[li] Additional Rec: N/A
[/li]

[] Interview: Didn't get one. I think I stuffed the area code and phone numbers >_<.[/ul]
Other
[ul][] Country (if international applicant): Australia

[li] School Type: Private
[/li]

[li] Ethnicity: Asian (I prefer to call myself an Asian Australian as opposed to an Australia Asian)
[/li]

[li] Gender: Male
[/li]

[li] Income Bracket: pretty low...
[/li]

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/li]First-generation to go to college, probably for a few generations back.[/ul]

[ul]Reflection
[li] Strengths:[/li]Not sure. Might be the first-generation stuff. Most likely my gradual improvement through 9-12. I got three Cs in Year 9 (rest As; I was a tard then), two Bs in Year 10 (rest As), one B in Year 11 (rest As), and now all As in Year 12.

[li] Weaknesses:[/li]I was lazy with the application. I spent a few months on the essays, but everything else was last minute. Don't think I tried hard enough for the SATs - I hardly did any revision. In fact, I only found out what I had to do for the rest of the application in Term 3 of my senior year (first half of final semester) - our counselor very rarely (I mean, once every ten years?) deals with US applications. Apparently we sent a student to Harvard a few years back. I'm hazy on the details. If so, he made the wrong choice :P.

[li] Why you think you were deferred:[/li]They want to see my music?[/ul]

General Comments:
I am supremely surprised. Will be revamping my application for Regular decision in light of this, as I am deadset on Yale. A quirk was that I didn't really know how to submit the Common App and ended up sending it to Yale as Regular Decision...sent an email and it was fixed though. Congratulations to those accepted! Hope I'll be joining you in 2008!

Decision: Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[] Fee Waiver Used?: No
[] SAT I (by section): 1760 (630 CR, 540 M, 590 W)
[] SAT IIs: US History 650, World History 670, Molecular Biology 680, Ecological Biology 680, Literature 550, Math II 600
[] GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 4.00 uw, 4.51 w, 4.21 UC GPA (weighting system used officially by school for ranking)
[] Rank: 1/273 uw, 2/273 w
[] APs (including this year's): Junior year: Biology (4), World History (4), Senior year: English Literature and Composition and Calculus AB (most APs taken out of anyone in school including valedictorian; maxed out on all APs considering I'm not language fluent for the other AP subjects and scheduling conflicts)
[] Senior Yr Courseload: Chinese 5/6 (Independent Study), Chemistry (school offers no honors or AP Chemistry), Drawing (graduating requirement due to UC system), AP Calculus AB, AP English Literature and Composition, American Democracy and Government/Economics (school offers no honors or AP Government or Economics)
[] Number of Apps from Your School: No other early applicant to ANY school except me.
[li] Other stats (Awards, etc.): California Legislature Assembly Certificate of Recognition for Balboa JROTC Battalion Commander, University of San Francisco School of Law Street Law Completion Certificate, California Mock Trial San Francisco City and County Championship Team, Various JROTC awards, most notably: Superior Cadet Award, National Sojourners Award, Scottish Rites Award.
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Mock Trial 10-12 (Varsity Trial Attorney, Varsity Team Captain), Army JROTC 9-11 (Battalion Commander, Battalion Trainings and Operations Officer), School Newspaper 9-10 (Opinions Page Editor and Regular Contributor), Political Science Club 10 (will continue mock trial involvement, newspaper, and political science in college with political science as a major and law school in the future)
[] Job/Work Experience: Peer Educator and Facilitator at Diversity Works (2002-2005) and Summer Clerkship at Munger, Tolles & Olson under attorneys, partners, and paralegals.
[] Essays (subject and responses): I wrote my short answer essay about my interest in the law and what I've done to make that career path a choice: law academy, mentorships with Bar Association, mock trial, clerkship at a major law firm. My first essay was about my epiphany that got me into the law (how I was first awed and amazed by it) and how I made it come true; it also goes into great detail about my experience in mock trial and how it really helped me mature and grow stronger as a person from my meek freshman year to the confident, down-to-earth, won't shut up kind of guy that I am now. My second essay goes into detail about my epiphany, becoming who I am, and my maturation as a person.
[] Teacher Recs: My first recommendation is from my Law Academy History teacher who wrote about my personal characteristics and life outside of school, as he's also the teacher sponsor and coach of mock trial. My second recommendation is from my Law Academy English teacher who wrote about my traits in the classroom and lectures. He also talks about my personal traits outside of the classroom as well.
[] Counselor Rec: She wrote about my involvement with the school, the community, and how I juggle a lot of things and get stuff done nonetheless.
[] Interview (feel, interviewer and general location): I had my interview done downtown in a bar in the large Hyatt by the Embarcadero. It was a very interesting and great interview, as he is involved in the legal career as well. It went pretty well; we ended up talking for an hour and a half.
[li] Hook (TASP, RSI, Research, etc.): No one has ever applied to Yale from my school before. In addition, no one has ever been to a major ranking university outside of the UC system. For a while, my high school didn't have anyone going to college. Last year was the first year that anyone applied to an Ivy (valedictorian applied to Harvard) but she got outright rejected. This year, many more are applying to Ivies but none are applying to HYP sans one other person.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: California, United States
[] School Type, Average Stats of School (if available): Public, never sends students to top schools outside of the UC system (Berkeley, LA) and last year where two went to Wellesley and Stanford (one each).
[] Ethnicity: Asian -- Taiwanese
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Middle class ($75,000)
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First generation of applicants to HYP, Ivies, or top colleges.
[] Strengths: GPA, rank, extracurriculars, leadership positions, essays
[] Weaknesses: SAT
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I expected either deferral for the most part. My SAT scores put me in the bottom 50% of the applicant pool, I believe. However, I like to believe that everything else is solid. Thus, I believe they've deferred me for the following reason. In addition, I doubt they wanted to deny me because they've never had people apply there from my school. They sent student ambassadors to come and visit and whatnot. I think some "politicking" was involved but I really do believe that I could and did stand my own in the early applicant pool and hopefully in the regular pool as well.
[/li]

[/ul]Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: Good-luck everybody! I'm going to send them some additional things. I'm definitely rooting for all of you that have been deferred as well. I checked it in front of my class on the projection screen in Government and it was really nerve-wracking. I hope that didn't happen to any of you guys. We'll make it someplace and we'll do extraordinarily well. I've had a blast meeting all of you and talking to you here; you guys rock!

is it just me or does it seem like these admissions decisions are awfully indiscriminate? i don't see many differences between these accepted, deferred, and rejected candidates at all...

I was accepted... and I'm trying to figure out why. I have the same stats as most of these people, but with less extra curriculars and awards... there's really nothing special about me!

yeah, i am deferred, and I feel sometimes college decisions can be arbitrary. Oh well, life..

i got deferred - can/should you send them stuff such as an additional essay or recommendations? do you have to redo/resend the application or any forms?

I agree with TheHappyPianoMan...the differences (if any) are so miniscule...
maybe the essays played a role?

I was accepted, but quite honestly, I stare back at people who, on paper, seem more qualified than I. People with practically the same scores as me who wrote about more interesting topics or had better ECs or anything. Maybe the essays/recs have more weight than we often assign to them, or maybe its just a sort of "package" that we can't really see.

after being deferred, should i send in any extra letters of recommendation, essays? do i need to re-submit my application?

(2370 SAT - 770 M, 800 CR, 800 W; president of NHS, Eagle Scout, all-county track running and team captain, valedictorian, 4.0 GPA, very strong essays)
