Official Early Decision Results 2009

I have a couple friends in CMC and a pretty close friend who is in HMC.

Yet, personally, I think the less people I know, the better cuz I really want to start fresh

Good to know I’m not the only one. At least we all will have a chance to become at least somewhat acquainted in the coming months, assuming that any of us will even recognize each other in the real world.

I hadn’t taken the other Claremont schools into consideration. Given the size of my school, it is probable that at least a couple will attempt to go one of them, so maybe I’ll run into one of them at some point.

My son was accepted at HMC - got his letter today.

[]Essays: I was pretty happy with my common app and “why Mudd is awesome” essays. And the stupid AP Scholar with Distinction - yay, I paid The College Board a ridiculous amount of money to take their ridiculous exams, and they give me a ridiculous certificate!!!111!!
[*]Advice? Commiserations? Feel like bragging?:[/ul] Very, very happy! After the entire week of waiting nervously (which immediately followed rejection from Caltech) this was such a relief.

your essay was quite brilliant
loved it

Congratulations to everyone that got accepted. I just was wondering how many of you who got accepted did the interview with HMC? I unfortunentily found out late about the interview so I didn’t do one for HMC so I’m hoping it doesn’t hurt my chances too much.

The essay by firstdude is entertaining but also nonsensical. There is nothing is the history of humankind which would remotely suggest that his version of reality is even remotely possible. As much as he dislikes capitalism, it has proved more successful than any other economic system. Sure there are inequalities and injustices, but your need to find utopia generally leads to people placing their faith in false prophets and madmen who create much more misery than the system they replaced. Unfortunately, there are countless examples of this throughout history. If you look at people in large organizations where the profit motive does not exist (government organizations), they are generally less productive and increasingly demoralized by the unwillingness of the organization to recognize (measure) or reward their efforts. Firstdude, I hope in your life you will not be blinded by dogma and keep an open mind about all the things you have yet to experience.

AHA! I have succeeded, in making people think after reading it.

^^
I do agree with parent57
But regardless of its possibility, it was indeed a well put out essay with pretty concrete events to back up.
The essay was worthwhile to understand what you think of.

Agree, at least with the latter part. I’m thinking maybe history wasn’t a strong subject at his high school. It’s interesting to see such easy dismissal of “brutality” and “bloody revolution” paired with the position that recreational hunting and fishing should be banned completely. I also look forward to the reception a physicist will receive from economists on his offer to run the world economy by computer, thus eliminating corruption from the system and allowing “every individual” to “pursue whatever they want… without needing to be concerned with paying bills.”

Don’t confuse reactions with “making people think.” If what your audience thinks (for example) is, “sheesh, what a nutter,” that may not be an indicator of your success. But you may be happy to know that you’ll find plenty of kindred spirits in the student body at Mudd, and elsewhere in academia.

Apologies for going further off topic. Congrats again to those with ED acceptances! Never seen such a Mudd presence on CC, or maybe vice versa.

“never seen such a Mudd presense on CC”

because the class of 14’ is nerdier than ever. : )

I’m not trying to attack the essay or anything (in fact this essay is probably better than what I can write haha) but is it just me or did that essay seem more like a report with a few opinions here and there than a personal essay?
The concluding pargraph has this sentence in it:

“Under this system, every individual is free to pursue whatever they want, as long as it harms no one, without needing to be concerned with paying bills”
Who would sweat their backs to grow your rice?

“As a future physicist, I hope to be able to work with economists to develop and implement algorithms that would allow an economy to be run entirely by computer – the only way to assuredly prevent corruption. At the very least, I would like to use an advanced degree to lend my arguments greater credence.”
Why physicist then? Why not economics, financial mathematics, computer science, or pure mathematics?

And somehow being a PhD in physics will make the citizens of America believe your comments about economics??

Funny, from my perspective this was much less formal than a lot of stuff I write for school, and teachers have always told me my writing is too informal…

I think it just demonstrates part of the wide range of styles that can work in an application essay. They’re not like SAT essays, thank goodness.
