[] Other Schools Applied to: Caltech, MIT, Stanford, Pomona College, UCs, Cal States
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Academics; passion for my major; glowing recommendations
[] Weaknesses: A bit thin on extracurriculars; gap year
[li] Why you think you were denied: gap year; prior applications; essays?[/li][/ul]General Comments
I attended college for half a semester my freshman year and then had to take the remainder of the year off (gap year), then applied ED to HMC. Guess that really turned them off to me, even though I had a perfectly fine reason for taking time off. Could also be that I’ve applied before, who knows. I was told before I applied that I would be considered based on my high school record, but maybe that didn’t happen. I eagerly await finding out why I was rejected.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2280: 740 M, 780 CR, 760 W
[] SAT II: 740/790 Math II, 640 World History, 770 US History, 760 Bio E
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.0
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Not officially ranked, but counselor wrote that I was number 1 in her letter.
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): None available at my school.
[] IB (place score in parenthesis):None Available
[] Senior Year Course Load: HS: English, Pre-Calculus, Physics; College: Calculus, General Psychology, Abnormal Psychology, Personality Psychology, Statistics, working-with-disabilities certification courses
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): NMSF?
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Boy Scouts (Eagle, Senior Patrol Leader), varsity tennis (captain), math team, school newspaper (science department head), about 50 units of afternoon courses at community colleges.
[] Job/Work Experience: Office assistant during a free period at school, math tutor
[] Volunteer/Community service: Boy Scouts
[] Summer Activities: 3 summers staffing a Boy Scout camp, 2 weeks building water filters in Ecuador, one summer taking 6 political science credits.
[] Essays: Meh. I wrote about how I learned to love teaching and tutoring for the Common App essay. I used backpacking as an analogy for HMC for the “Why Mudd” essay. I wrote about how an internship convinced me NOT to be a doctor for the math/science/engineering essay.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read any of them. I’m sure they were at least decent.
[] Counselor Rec: Glowing. This woman loves me.
[] Additional Rec: None.
[] Interview: Okay. It was my first interview, so I know I was really awkward. I guess she looked through the stiffness, as I’m sure the PHRASING was passionate even if I was stumbling through the verbalization.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] School Type: Charter Public, with an emphasis on healthcare.
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Not on the app. 100K - 120 K
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None. My school’s specialty is kinda weird, so maybe I have some novelty value?
[] Other Schools Applied to: Rose-Hulman, U of Alabama.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Showed a passion for learning even outside of STEM, with a diverse set of classes at the local CC’s that I took for fun in my spare time. I definitely had heavy involvement in the Boy Scouts, and some smaller involvement in STEM activities.
[] Weaknesses: Not a single AP. I know they take this into account, but I was worried they wouldn’t take the gamble without standardized scores to show. Involvement in STEM activities, but not at the level I see on these boards.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Novelty (4 years of healthcare internships and 20 units of healthcare CC classes), rounded-ness (good STEM, but also in scouts, sports, some social science CC classes)[/li][/ul]General Comments or statements to brag: Honestly didn’t expect to get in. Now I hope financial aid works out. Good luck everyone!

Decision: Rejected

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: EE
[] State (if domestic applicant): California
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White, Korean, Portuguese

[] Income Bracket: $150,000
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): My big turn around Junior year
[] Other Schools Applied to: RHIT, Georgia Tech, USC
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: STEM extracurricular, but still heavily involved in music program. Junior year grades. Simply great interview.
[] Weaknesses: Clearly my GPA. My SAT scores are slightly below their average. And now that I think about it, my summer activities are lacking.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Really, I think my GPA was the biggest factor. I don’t think they’re willing to take a risk on someone who got great grades for only 1 semester. [/li][/ul]General Comments or statements to brag:
I am not surprised that I was rejected. My numbers are just simply not good enough. There’s only so much that a great essay and interview can do. A lot of the things that make me stand out, such as being the guinea pig class for the MAP program, didn’t have really any place to be talked about besides the interview.

Decision: Accepted

[] Summer Activities:

ATDP Course on Advanced Chemistry
[] Essays: Liked them when I wrote them… not so much now. Responded to the “What is one thing we won’t know about you after reading your application” prompt. My “Why HMC?” response didn’t really make sense, but I guess it worked!
[] Teacher Recommendation: Probably decent
[] Counselor Rec: She barely knows me…
[] Additional Rec: Probably good
[li] Interview: N/A
[/li]

[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Mathematics
[] State (if domestic applicant): CA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Magnet School I think?
[] Ethnicity: TAIWANESE!!!
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: $40-60k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I have no idea… Being female? LOL
[] Other Schools Applied to: UChicago, USC, top 5 UC’s… Was gonna apply to Caltech and Rice if I didn’t get into HMC

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: High school courses were really math/science oriented
[] Weaknesses: SAT score?
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I really don’t know…
[/li]

[/ul]General Comments or statements to brag:
Good luck to everyone else! I look forward to seeing you guys at Harvey Mudd :)

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220 (740 CR, 800M, 680W)
[] ACT: none
[] SAT II: 770 Math II, 780 Chem
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.9
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 6/471
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): Stat (5), Chem (5), APUSH (3), US Gov, Lit, Bio, Psych, Calc AB
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): none
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Bio, AP US Gov, AP English Lit, AP Psych, AP Calc AB, Honors Latin IV
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Does the National Latin Exam count? And National Merit Commended Student?
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Varsity XC and JV track, a season of swimming, NHS, Latin Club
[] Job/Work Experience: Summer cashier at a local grocery store since I was 15
[] Volunteer/Community service: Some at the hospital and nursing home (just the 25 hrs each for NHS).
[] Summer Activities: Work, XC practice
[] Essays: Common app was about how running taught me how to work hard and how to value both sucess and failure. I was proud of it, but it wasn’t amazing. My why Mudd? essay was okay, I felt that I had made it personal but I really ran out of room. I wrote about wanting to build an emission free vehicle for the last one, and I liked how it turned out.
[] Teacher Recommendation: An okay one from my Latin teacher, and a really good one from my Stat teacher.
[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t read it but I’m pretty sure that it was really good. My counselor is a very nice woman.
[] Additional Rec: My boss wrote an amazing letter that made me cry when I read it…I do cry easily but still it was nice.
[] Interview: I thought it went decently but I didn’t do any other interviews so I don’t really know.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
[] Intended Major: Engineering
[] State (if domestic applicant): New Jersey
[] Country (if international applicant): USA
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket: Not sure, but not a lot.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m a girl?
[] Other Schools Applied to: RPI, Mines, Stevens
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I thought my essays really showcased my personality and came out better than I expected them to. I think my passion for my sport, which I am most likely continuing in college (time management will be fun), showed dedication and an ability to work hard.
[] Weaknesses: My SAT writing was a tad low, and I’m not number one in my class like many applicants are. Also, I don’t have a 4.0 or an 800 SAT II Math II.
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: Well roundedness and luck.[/li][/ul]General Comments or statements to brag: I didn’t think I was going to get in. I was freaking out for a good three days before I found out. Congrats to those of you who got accepted! I can’t wait to see you in the fall!

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] ACT: 34 (12 on essay)
[] SAT II: 800 math level 2, 760 chemistry
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.85
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP AB Calculus (5), AP Chemistry (5), AP English, AP BC Calculus, AP C Physics, AP Biology, AP Vergil
[] Senior Year Course Load: Organic Chemistry, AP Bio, AP C Physics, English, Psycomm, Global Communities, AP BC Calculus
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): none :frowning:
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Underwater Research Course at Cornell (full on college level 730 course), Computational Medicinal Chemistry at Northwestern (enrichment course), kinesiology at Brown (enrichment course), full voting member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS), math team and science bowl (only one year)
[] Volunteer/Community service: minor volunteer work-nothing noteworthy
[] Essays: Very strong, spent a lot of time and had a significant amount of feedback. For common app essay, I wrote about how a diving experience inspired me to pursue studying bioluminescence and how that can be seen in the public eye as a financial succubus. Basically, I advocated that scientific research can’t always be concerned with practical applications and that we need to follow our curiosity even if the applications aren’t initially apparent. Other essays were about science, ontological security (random I know, but I guess it worked), and other things.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I waived my rights to read them, but knowing the teachers for 2-4 years each I am positive nicer things could not be said.
[] Additional Rec: My research mentor (professor from Cornell) wrote me a beautiful rec letter that I am sure helped a lot.
[] Interview: never visited actually, so no interview
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: nope
[] Intended Major: chem and bio joint major, maybe math as a minor (does HMC even have minors-haven’t hear much about my options with regard to majors)
[] State (if domestic applicant): Minnesota
[] School Type: Private- college prep
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: male
[] Income Bracket: well off
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): research paper? additional rec letter?
[] Other Schools Applied to: CalTech, MIT, Williams, Pomona (a few others that I forgot)
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Organic Chemistry, Research, taken a high level college course and got an A, rec letters, depth in most of my ECs (except math team and science bowl)
[] Weaknesses: Haven’t won Intel, but they don’t expect everyone to. White, Male, Jewish.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I think I have a very strong application.
[/ul]General Comments or statements to brag: I am so excited!!! I am so happy I was accepted and cannot wait for the fall. The only thing is I am having slight buyer’s remorse in that I will never know if I would’ve gotten into MIT or CalTech. Also, when I tell friends and family outside of math and science that I am attending Harvey Mudd, I might as well be telling them I am going to a community college. They have no idea that it is an amazing school. I know it doesn’t really matter (because graduate schools/med schools will know its amazing), but it would be nice if I could indulge my ego and say I’m going to MIT. Oh well, I guess in the end when I’m accepted to Harvard’s MD/PhD program it won’t matter :).

[/ul]**General Comments or statements to brag:[ /b] For some reason, my letter didn’t show up until April 3!!! I wasn’t accepted to Harvard, Princeton, or Stanford, so I didn’t think that I would get into Harvey Mudd!! This school was my first choice all along, and I literally cried when I saw the big envelope. I still can’t believe it…really, I’m so happy and I can’t wait to see you all in the fall!!! It’s going to be an amazing 4 years!!!
