the major question would be how many people with a higher GPA than your son applied early and were any of them deferred or rejected? And from my experience, the outliers in the GPA cut off are likely athletes or URMs (... or both).

Soccerguy315, I know of one with higher GPA deferred; don't know stats on others. S is serious soccer player but not good enough for UVA (state ODP but not regional). Decided not to play in college after ACL injury sidelined whole junior year. GPA was good that year (4.56) because he had time to actually do the work. S is not a legacy, not a minority. Used essays to highlight how injury was handled--joined chess club, Interact--discovered new self, etc.

TheAnalyst, you are mixing apples and oranges. The Engineering School is much easier to get into than A&S at UVA. In 2005, the overall admit rate for Engineering was 56% versus 35% for A&S.

Further, the above stats do not account for the disparity in admissions between residents and non-residents. Last year, the overall admit rate for residents was 49% versus 30% for nonresidents.

http://www.virginia.edu/stats&facts/

They don't publish the admit rate for RESIDENT, Engineering students; however, it is probably well in excess of the 56% overall admit rate for the Engineering School.

Wahoos '10

Hey...

In the letter we got, where do they say to mail the deposit? I've lost my envelope:( Is it just the admissions office?

Yeah, it is sort of puzzling why some people got deferred, myself included, at least in comparison to others. I expected deferral, but in comparison to others...

Full IB
4.63 W GPA, very competitive school
710/640/660 SAT

Good Recs
Out-of-state
710 Math2, 760 Chem

Wow, that really sucks you should've been in. I would say your SAT's might be a little low but mine were high and I still didn't have any luck. Too bad you're out of state though =/.

This was previously posted by Jags86, and it might give you some insight into the minds of the UVa Admissions Committee in regards to Early Decision.

Congrats to everyone that got in & good luck to all those who got deferred or will apply RD.

What are your predicted IB scores? Plus what IB subjects do you take?

So far, I have a 7 in Math Studies and a 4 in AP French (I never took the class) but for the IB classes,
IB Bio II, Chem II & III, American and Int'l History, Math Studies I & II, Art I-IV, FrenchII-V, Comp Sci I

All that I can guess is that they got a lot of applicants from my school.

I am happy that they deferred me, but I don't think they should have done it. I guess they knew I was meant to be a Clemson Tiger.

Which are going to be your HLs and SLs?

English, History, Art, and Chemistry HLs

But I'll have AP credit in French, American History, and Calculus

tenniscraze, were you from instate when you applied to UVa? I bet that they get a lot of applications from North Carolina - that may be my problem.

A couple of years ago my in state daughter was deferred ED but ultimately accepted RD. She wrote a letter to Blackburn after getting deferred and he wrote back telling her that the most important thing she needed to do was the one thing that she actually had control over: bring her grades up. She did it (all As) and got in in the spring.

So there is hope for deferreds.

Brilliantmidgit,

Tenniscraze is an international student.

(Tenniscraze, we have to play squash the next time you're up in NY. I just started playing again at the UVA/Yale Club.)

parent2009, did your D write another personal statement or send in another rec? Also, could you post her stats??

Full IB Bilingual Diploma: predicted 45 points, with SL A1 Eng, SL A1 Self-taught Vietnamese, HL Economics, HL Chemistry, HL Physics, HL Maths. I already got 7s in SL A1 Eng, SL A1 Self-taught Vietnamese, and HL Maths from last year.

GPA: 4.0 UW, 4.643W, very competitive international school.
Rank: 1st of 124.
New SAT: 800V/800M/760W.
SAT II Subjects: 800MII/800Chem/770Phy/780USH/800Bio/800Fre.
AP Subjects: (I only self-study and take the exams; I took AP WHist in 9th grade, AP Calc, AP Stat, AP US Politics, and AP Lang in 10th grade, and the rest in 11th grade)
5s on AP Calc, AP Stat, AP Chem, AP Phy, AP Bio, AP USH, AP WHist, AP Microeconomics, AP Macroeconomics.
4s on AP Bio, AP Fre, AP Eng Lit, AP Eng Lang, AP US Politics.
Other university-level courses: I completed Multi-variable Calculus this semester. I plan on signing up for Linear Algebra in the spring.
In-state.
Excellent Essays.
Excellent Letters of Recommendation.
Extracurricular Activities: Only 150 hours for CAS.

Marcel: you could have got into Harvard with those Stats!!! O.O

I could, but I chose to go to UVa because it's in-state and more convenient. Also, it's cheap yet still offers me an Ivy League world-class education.

But the truth is that Harvard would reject me. Look at what I have for extracurricular activities: a mere 150 hours for CAS.

Furthermore, I like Thomas Jefferson who is one of the most intellectually sophisticated men in history. Also, I like the UVa campus...The Rotunda and Academical Village just rock!

My ultimate aim is to graduate from UVa in three years (though hopefully with my AP scores I should graduate in two years, if that is allowed at the university). Then I wish to go to Oxford to do my doctorate. :)
