I talked to Dean Parke Muth, one of the admissions deans, last week regarding the IB programme. He noted that UVA likes IB students a lot, which is why there is an increasing number of incoming students that did IB in high school.

The fact that you are doing a full IB diploma and taking 4 HLs shows that you have a demanding courseload. Your SAT scores however could go higher. And you have not told me your rank yet, which might affect your chances of admissions. You are a good candidate which is why they have not, and hopefully do not, reject you.

I'm not sure that my daughter's "stats" are particularly relevant at this point since she graduated high school in 2000. But, as I recall, she had just over a 1300 on the SAT, comparable SAT IIs (except for writing, which was higher), and a B+ overall average in high school. The key though, was that she started off slow (several Cs her freshman and sophomore year) and finished very strong. She also took at least 8 or 9 AP classes, and played a varsity sport. And she was in state.

She did not send another personal statement or recommendation. I doubt either (especially a recommendation) would make much of a difference for anyone.

The key to getting accepted into U-Va seems to be actually living in Virginia.

Ever since I visited U-Va for a summer program last summer, I fell in love with it right away. First off, the campus is breath-taking. It's mixture of passionate history and aggressive modernism has created an atmosphere that is incredibly unique. It has a liberal arts school feel, while still maintaining the size of a public university. Great athletic programs stand side-by-side with amazing academic prgrams. U-Va is the best of both worlds, in every case.

I am an out-of-state junior male, and I will be applying to U-Va ED next fall. I have a good GPA (3.8 unweighted, 4.2 weighted), solid SAT scores (750 CR, 560 M (will be retaking at least once more) 690 W), and a top 10% class rank, and I am terrified that I will not be making it into U-Va.

From the looks of it, U-Va looks with great favor upon those who reside in-state.

Well UVA always has about 70% in state, i believe because of a quota they need to meet being a state school. Don't start worrying about your chances now, save that for 6 months from now or so. Besides it looks like a very random process (I'm sure its not but I cant find a method)... I know people in my school (in state) with amazing stats that didn't get in, and ones with worse that did... so all you can do now is keep the grades up, retake the SAT, and keep doing outside activities that you have. Don't ever lose hope, with your GPA and class rank it is definitely possible.

"From the looks of it, U-Va looks with great favor upon those who reside in-state."

Not as much as other state schools at or near its caliber. ucla/uc-berkeley have like a 95% in-state population, unc has a 80% in-state population, etc.

DEFERRED

im pretty sure i have no chance of getting in considering i will be getting a "c" in ib math II, which really sucks because i probably have to stay in state and dont really think tech/madison are for me (hoping for william and mary)

Wow - can't believe you got deferred! I'm full IB too and applied RD and now very worried!

W & M is harder to get into than UVA but they like IB kids a lot more than UVA. I also applied to W & M. Hang in there, you might just get in UVA RD!

Tech and JMU aren't for me either and I did not apply to those schools. My safety is UR and I probably will not go there if I am accepted.

School doesn't give exact GPA in the format of 3.5-4.0 etc., but average grade for 11th grade is 91, 12th grade is 95 (so far). 9th and 10th are about 85 and 89 respectively. I don't know what kind of GPA that would bring about but I'm pretty sure it would be above or around 4.0 considering the I.B. course load. Projected I.B. score (I know they don't matter much) 41/45.
