Subjective:

There seems to be a tendency for acceptees to paint really rosy images of this stuff. It's hard for us to judge our own work, but I'm going to try to tell it like it is.

Essay: I'll be honest here. My Common App piano essay was trite and cliched. Yes, it was very well written, at least in my opinion. But it was on tired and worn-out material. I sent this to Princeton, and well, I got deferred. (I really happen to think my essays did me in at Princeton, they were rather hackneyed.)

Put it this way ... the essays had to be completely re-done for the other schools.

My Rice personal statement did depict that I wanted to make a difference in a particular field. I guess it showed some drive. It was okay, but nothing special.

I didn't get anything across that I really wanted to in those essays. It was my chance to shine, and I definitely blew it. My rewritten essays were very good, at least I felt, but those did NOT go to Rice.

Letters of Recommendation:

The one I read from my AP Calculus teacher was absolutely wonderful. Not to sound arrogant, but I don't think it gets orders of magnitude better than what he wrote. It's very hard for me to put into words, because a lot of it was the style in which it was written, and I don't remember it completely. It was down to earth and overflowing with praise. He went to great lengths to describe my ability and love of learning. I can honestly tell you it was outstanding.

I didn't read my history teacher's recommendation. But he was extremely confident that I would get into a very good school, and I did do very well in his class. He has told me that a lot of people take his course and get A's, but not many people actually love the material, and he said it was great that I really liked history. I also participated a great deal in his class, and talk to him about world affairs on the side.

I'm sure my counselor rec was very nice. She wouldn't let me read it, but she does believe I've matured a tremendous amount and she really likes me. She also thinks my academic abilities and extracurricular activities are top flight.

Why I think I got admitted: Outstanding grades, strong SAT II scores, very nice recs that praised my love of learning. Winning cello and piano competitions probably helped as well, lots of music stuff. I also won several state level academic awards. National Merit Semifinalist. I think Rice was good enough to overlook my essay issues.

Sent in a CD - not sure if it made a difference.

Other factors:
No interview. Sent Rice an update, and called to reaffirm my interest (had gone to talk to a visiting admissions officer at my school). I also sent in a detailed Activity List (which I created after I got deferred from Princeton).

Geographic? NJ? Maybe that helped?
