*OFFICIAL* Fall 2010 Haas Transfer Thread

There was a thread last year so I figured that I'll make a thread this year. If you applied for Fall 2010 to Haas, try to keep all the Haas-related discussion here so that others can find it quickly too.

First off, here is the link to the Haas undergrad website for transfers:

Myths and FAQs, Undergraduate Program - Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley

It answers almost every question that you may have.

how about no…scott

bump 10char

there doesnt seem to be many haas applicants on here, it seems like most ppl applied to econ.

when do they send out their essay prompts?

and does anyone know if haas has ever accepted a 1 year transfer before?

^ it comes out at the around the same time as teh january update. Ive never heard of a one year transfer, but im sure there are.

@Calbearguy: i guess that’s good news for me then! less competition. did u apply to econ or business?

@lomkh: there was a guy who attempted to transfer to haas in 1 year. i think it was for fall 2010 too. i forgot who it was but he kept making threads this past summer.

i think that might have been me, i made a couple of threads about it i think, though i never actually got an answer to one of them where i explicitly asked if anyone had heard of someone ever doing it in 1 yr…didn’t get a yes or a no, just got advice on how to get into haas haha

i applied haas!

i asked my friend who currently goes to Cal what their essay prompts were and here they are:

2 essays:

Essay one: (250 words) tell us a question you think a competitive college would ask and answer it.

Essay two: (500 words) Pick one
Choice A: you’re writing your autobiography of 300 pages. what would page 250 say.
Choice B: if your room, your car, or your computer could talk, what would they say about you.

i posted this b/c the 3rd essay we might have to write in Feb might be similar to these

I’m applying fall 2010. I wish the best of luck to you all, especially laker. Please post your stats if you get accepted/rejected. ;)

Is anybody not coming from a CC? I’m coming from SDSU and feel most wary about how well i satisfied the breadth and prereqs… Berkeley doesn’t have an articulation agreement with my school so I felt pretty in the dark about whether the classes that I took last year would satisfy the requirements or not.

I’m definitely looking forward to a busy spring semester to keep my mind off of that admitted/ rejected letter that we have to wait 5 months for.

@Cupertino: thanks, good luck to u too and everyone else

@SDSguy: did u fill out the SAR? as far as i know, Haas takes VERY few transfers from anywhere outside the CCC system

I got the email for the supplemental stuff today! Hell until January 31st :(

^I did not get the email yet…is the SAR, resume, and supplemental essay due jan 31st!!?

Sorry for the late response, the site was down for so long last night!

uhm I don’t know about the SAR, but yes the resume, self reported academic record, and essay are due Jan 31st!!!

You should try to log in for the myBerkeleyApplication website, it’s probably open for you arleady?

Goodluck!

Question about the resume:
How do I fill this out and avoid duplicating what I already put in the UC app?
To Haas admission officers mainly focus on the supplemental stuff or the UC app?

yea i realized i got the email yesterday at 2pm also but it was in my SPAM folder…they look at both the supplemental stuff as well as the UC app but i would think the supplemental stuff is more important

it does not really matter if ur resume is similar to the UC app’s ECs section. they just want to filter out and HS crap that you may have put into the UCs section. supplemental stuff is basically just a more focused application towards haas than the UC app. they just don’t want to bother reading ur ECs that’s not related to business, or seeing the classes u took for other majors (others school applied), or other nonsense in the general UC app.

lakerforever24,

By SAR I’m guessing you mean Self-Reported Academic Record… and if so you were right, after I filled it out on the supplemental form it was much clearer which courses applied towards which requirements.

I had filled out the same thing on paper before I applied, but for some reason it seemed less clear… maybe I just did a better job of using assist and my local CC haha.

Yeah I know Haas takes few outside of the CCC system, but at least I go to a university in California haha! And they do take SOME, so I decided that I wanted to one of those “some.”

Do you guys want to list GPA, EC’s, etc. to see where we stand compared to each other? Or should we keep it friendly support-ish =)

^^Yep i meant SAR. i’m sure they’ll take at least a half dozen non CC transfers (made that number up)

Here’s my Stats:
Overall GPA: 4.0
Breadth: Completed 7/7 by Fall 09
Language Requirement: 3 yrs in HS
Prereqs: Completed all except Calculus (in progress for spring)

ECs:
-Student Govt, Fiscal Affairs
-Retail work for a few summers…

Essays:
-Probably like 8.5/10
-I did them over thanksgiving break. Overall they were good, but i obviously could have done better. I’ll be working on the 3rd during this whole month after I finish my USC app.

I guess for me it’s gonna come down to my ECs. I don’t really have much crap on my resume b/c i had to complete Haas requirements, IGETC, USC requirements in 2 years…didn’t have time to do anything else.

Haha if it really is 6 people from in-state universities then I’d be very lucky! Much better to apply and be rejected than to never apply.

My GPA is pretty high… just a few hundredths away from a 4.0, but I don’t like getting caught up in silly things like that.

What do you think sets you apart/ is the strength of your application lakerfan?

I think mine is my work experience… I support myself so I work 30 hours a week while in school, and worked between 60 and 70 a week over summer.

What distinguishes me as a person is how much I really love work… so I hope my application conveyed that.

My second little key is that I grew up speaking English and Spanish, so am pretty good at both… but switched to Chinese in college for the challenge and experience. I like being the white guy who speaks Chinese =).

Finally, I’ve recently started my own business based around CRM… which has been a very interesting experience.

Of course there is the obligatory student government and a student club… but I realized pretty quickly last year that they didn’t personally fulfill me, so lately I’ve been focusing on things that I really enjoy. Whether or not I get to transfer (although I would absolutely love to), it’s been a huge growing experience.

I’d love to hear what other people think is the edge on their application that defines them as people! It was a challenge to get your personality to shine through.
