@ CURIOUS, I’d say you’re in at UCD,UCI, and UCSB. UCLA and UCB psych aren’t a long shot but, psych at UCLA is impacted so I can’t give an honest answer on that. Keep in mind though they do a comprehensive review. However, with a 3.59 gpa i’d say you stand a decent chance! I’m a psych major also.

Essay: 8/10

Hey guys, I was wondering if some more of you would chance me! Im on Page 12 at the bottom!

Hey Kelli, so I think you’re easily in at UCD, UCSD, UCSB, and UCSC. UCLA had an average admitted GPA of 3.65. However, you have an upward trend and from what you mentioned, good personal statements and work experience/E.C.'s.

I would guess that with UCLA’s 40% admission rate for poli sci you have a pretty solid shot there. It’s a bit of a reach, but with your extra information and statements, you should have a solid shot. Around 50-50 I would estimate.

UCB I would imagine is harder to get into. I would probably say long shot, except that a UCB rep said your personal statements are really good. Again, I would say a possibility, but a little less likely than UCLA. Maybe 40% or so accepted.

thanks Emilsinclair, I appreciate your quick response! you must be waiting eagerly like the rest of us, I can see that you are on CC all the time! lol

lol oh yes, I love CC. I’m not addicted…yet I’m always on. Maybe I’m in denial. I am definitely waiting eagerly. I would just love to get an acceptance letter at this point…UCB preferrably.

To put things into perspective: The only college to ever send me a letter asking me to apply was ITT Tech. Plus, I can’t wait to be at a great university around brilliant students and professors.

Essay: A little rough, I’d say 8/10

Am I toast?

MeeHahn and walkabout,

You guys are both super borderline. MeeHahn because you’re from UCR and have the average applicant GPA across CCC/UC-UC/Private applicants. (It’s assumed UC-UC and Private applicants have higher GPAs than CCC students.) Walkabout, you’re also borderline because of your GPA and 33% of your prereqs missing. It’s really hard to say with you guys other than 50/50.

Are your essays truly 8/10 or are you guys being modest? A 9/10 or 10/10 essay definitely helps when you’re on the border!

I’m pretty sure it’s the other way around. CCC is notorious for super-inflated GPA’s.

Mikei,

I think the essays are well written, but I may have put a little too much enthusiasm in… they’re entirely sincere, but I worry about them coming off as florid or naive.

I only fell in love w/Geography six months ago. Budget cuts and newer students getting first pass at my school meant that I was SOL for getting into Geography 5 on time. I have taken Geog 1 (this was before UCLA released the list of prereqs) which is the same course minus the lab section, and I have an A in that course and Geography 2.

Do you think UCLA will give me a provisional contract (i.e. take this lower division class before you can enter the major)?

girlyshout,

I understand that CCC GPAs are often superinflated. But the reasoning behind my argument revolves around CCC priority. If the UC system sees that you are already attending a 4-year institution, they want to see why exactly you need to transfer over people in a 2-year institution who desperately need to transfer.

Here’s some evidence for my argument:
In 2009, UCLA’s transfer statistics website reports that the admission rates were:
Among CCC students: 34.66%
Among other UC students: 28.28%
Among non-UC California students: 12.39%

So how does one gain acceptance when they are facing a lower admit rate? I would assume one must have a higher GPA and better essays. :)

EDIT: Actually, after looking over UCLA’s statistics… It DOES appear the average GPA for UC to UC transfers is lower… Very interesting!

So I’ve been trying to avoid this cuz it stresses me out but I cant help it any more.

Essays: 8.5/10

@walkabout,

Were you able to communicate to the UCs about your dilemma regarding the Geography 5 class?

Trust me, the UC admissions officers are LOOKING for enthusiasm. That’s what they want to see. (I’ve had like 5 admissions officers/directors talk about how they look for enthusiasm regarding one’s major in the personal statements.) To me it just sounds like you are uncomfortable with writing about yourself and your interests. I highly doubt the admissions officers will look upon your essay as being “naive.” :)

mikei,

Would I be able to talk to someone @UCLA? I can get to the campus if that’s an option.

tbh I’m relieved to hear that I have a 50% chance, lol.

Have you looked into taking Geography 5 during the summer? If so, you could contact UCLA and tell them you’re going to take Geo5 in the summer!

Yeah. If another CC has geography lab (I know LACC and Pierce do) and summer courses I’d seriously consider it.

My guess is that being waitlisted @ SMC will have the same effect in the summer that it did in the spring, if not moreso… in one section 30+ people were crashing the course with me. 25+ had to be turned away. That’s a whole classroom, and I can only see that situation getting worse in the near future.

So I’ve been trying to avoid this because it stresses me out, but I cant help it any more.

Poly sci at UCB is competitive iirc . So i would say maybe a 30% chance with that gpa. Good
