haha I laughed so hard when I read that. Awesome. I spoke with the UCSD rep in the fall 2009. I visited…god in like November I think. They really like transfer students. It’s interesting that UCSD is generally considered the #3 UC in terms of prestige, yet it’s so easy (comparably) to get into.

As a Sociology major with that GPA you should be completely fine. I’m serious when I say that everyone is admitted with a 3.0+. If UCSD is your first choice, and I wouldn’t blame you, I loved it when I visited, then be excited because you’re good man!

If you want another source to verify this, contact UCSD and ask. It may seem like an odd question though lol. If someone on here (anyone else) wants to confirm what I’m saying or rebuke it, please do.

However, I’m telling you straight from everyone I’ve talked to (current UCSD students, applicants last year, this year, and a rep) that 3.0 is the auto-admit cut-off.

Maybe next year we’ll both be at UCSD. If I don’t get into Cal, I would highly consider it. My best friend goes there and he just recently became a member of the Lambda Kai fraternity. Rush lambda kai! lol.

yea it sucks not having calculus completed. but i have completed micro, macro and stats. everyone i’ve talked to has said the same thing as you. i just hope i get into UCD. i’ve seen their ‘transfer plan’ for economic transfer students.( basically a quarter by quarter plan of the classes you’re going to take)and they had different plans depending on if you completed the calculus series or not. so im assuming theyre somewhat prepared to take in students wo have not completed calc.

that’d be awesome emilsinclair! Haha yeah you guessed right it is my first choice (I didn’t apply to LA/Berkeley), the reason for my low GPA was because I spent my first year in a rough atmosphere at a private 4-year OOS.

I really hope they stay true to their word with the “Auto Admit Cut-off of 3.0.” I agree with you definitely that it’s “so comparably easy to get into” while being the third in prestige. That’s sort of shocking.

Forgot to ask this to you in my first post: What if we didn’t do TAG? I couldn’t qualify because all the “Critical Reading/Thinking” courses were full for Fall Semester, and per the TAG requirement you had to have completed that requirement by Fall '09. Do you think non-TAGers with 3.0 will still be fine?

I hope you get into your first choice Cal too, you’re a good man for the research and posting!

@emilsinclair9
I just stopped by to ask my economics professor about UCLA Economics and Cal, he said it’s like flipping a coin within the 3.7 range at UCLA(with TAP) and noted that Cal can be more open to lower GPA given a strong ECs or essays.

Just a little add-on for TAP people, IVC had 100% UCLA TAP rate 3 years ago, now it’s 80% and expected to drop more. :(

Don’t know if this helps, just thought I’d at what he said since he has been tracking this for the past 3 years.

I assume Econ was your initial choice, what is your backup? I dont think tap helps you get into your first choice it just makes it so they review your backup choice. (I could somewhat/completely wrong on this).

NEW POLICY - effective for Fall 2010 Transfer Applicants

Due to the continuous increase in transfer applications to UCLA and because the majority of applicants apply to a select number of majors, the following change in TAP admissions has been approved by the College of Letters and Science:

TAP certified students will be reviewed for alternate majors only if they meet both of the following provisions.

A. The alternate major may NOT be one of the following 10 selective majors:

Pre-Business Economics
Communication Studies
Pre-Economics
Pre-Economics/International Area Studies
English
Pre-Global Studies
Pre-History
Pre-Political Science
Pre-Psychology
Pre-Sociology

I have Latin American Studies for my alternative, but I’ll go to UCSD or UCD for Economics if I don’t get in to the first two. UCLA and Cal Economics are starting to look more and more like HAAS every year. Good Luck to those who are applying, I’ll post as soon as I get more info.

UCD is my first choice and no i don’t have the tag, as i only had 28 transferable units at the time. but the transfer counselor at my community college is also an admissions officer at UCD, and she said somehthing along the lines of "you’re grades are so good you’ll get in regardless( of the fact you havent completed calc) so i dunno, we’ll see, is there anyone on the forum here who did not complete the pre-reqs but got in???

@ Transferuc: Yeah, it seems that your professor would have better knowledge for chancing into Econ than I would. Although, it seems that he/she and I both said it’s about a coin flip, probably depending on the other applicants’ stats and accomplishments for Econ. Yeah, anyways, best of luck!

@ Oliver_Twist: Even if you didn’t TAG, it won’t matter. The 3.0 cut-off applies to everybody; I’m certain of this. So basically, even though you don’t have TAG, you’re still in.

Haha thanks! You’re a good man too for asking! This site is crazy helpful. It’s become my #1 resource for research on the UC universities and their majors/departments/admit rates/etc…

Seriously, I wasn’t even thinking about applying to Berkeley and UCSD because of a lack of prereqs (and I figured I wasn’t competitive enough) until the last week before the November deadline. I started asking more questions here on CC, and I realized that I’m eligible for Human Development at UCSD and Philosophy at Cal! My true interests are in Psychology, so wherever I go I’ll either be switching or doubling with Psych.

If it weren’t for this site, I wouldn’t even know that switching is a possibility for transfers especially for something highly impacted like Psych at Cal, but surprisingly it’s relatively easy. But if for whatever reason I can’t switch, I’ll just double or major/minor :).

Anyways, have a good time at UCSD! lol. I’ll definitely be coming down alot to visit my friend (next time’s in a month) and maybe I’ll see ya down there sometime. Who knows, I could very well end up there in the fall.
