@ solidblu: You have a fantastic chance for Berkeley. I would highly recommend that you go and visit even though you won’t know that you’re in during your spring break.

Your GPA is great, and your high school GPA won’t matter at all.

Your EC’s and awards are very impressive.

Overall, I would say that you have a great chance of getting in. I just visited UCB btw and loved it.

Just a couple suggestions: Go to the top of the Campanile (costs $2). Check out some of the tables on Telegraph. I was lucky enough to find (Psy Chi) a psychology group (which pertains to my major) and now I’m contacting professors in the department. Maybe you could find an anthro group and make similar connections. I would also highly recommend getting lunch in downtown Berkeley. You can’t beat the food there imo.

Anyway, I wish ya the best and definitely go visit if you can!

You are a solid applicant and have optimistic chances of being accepted.

I do recommend visiting while school is in session. The campus will be alive and only then will you be able to feel its personality.

How will you get there? Calculate how much the trip will cost with your car and then look at Southwest and Virgin Atlantic plane ticket prices. It should cost about $80-100 in transportation fees depending on what vehicle you drive/how early you purchase your plane ticket. I currently live in an apartment in LA (I go to SMC), but my dad lives in the bay area. It takes me about 6 hours to get to the bay. I drive a 2006 Toyota Corolla and it costs about $70 total in transportation costs.

Major: Biology/Physiology
UC GPA: 2.97
HS GPA: Below 2.0 for sure.
Applying to: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, UCD
Prereqs: all complete except Ochem
IGETC:completed
ECs: Math Tutor at School, part of MESA, AMSA and Honor’s Club
Essay: how my moms blindness has inspired me in school
Work: 30 Hrs/Week + Provider for my mom
I’m retaking a class I got a D in which wasn’t part of my pre-req for my major, conselour made me take it. Retaking it right now and have a A.
Math=A’s in all classes and now in Calc 2
Physics Series=B+B
Chem Series=C+B
Biology Series=B

Hopefully once this semester ends my GPA will be around a 3.2 from what I calculated weighed, 3.37 unweighed.

@ some1unknown: I would say you are in at UCSB and UCLA. A 3.5 is a bit low for UCLA, but with TAP, I’d say that would push you over the edge. I mean a 3.5 is a strong GPA and with TAP too, I can’t see you being in that 11% rejected pile (for TAP students). Thus, in at UCSB and UCLA.

As for Berkeley, I don’t know as much about their political science program. However, I would imagine that it would be a little harder to get into than UCLA’s.

I would say that you are borderline for UCB. Probably around a 45-50% chance. However, you do have that impressive internship with the assemblyman, so I’d say you’re definitely a competitive applicant.

thanks emilsinclair9, yeah i know a 3.5 is a bit low for ucla and ucb. I got one C from a class i took at CC while in HS school. However, since that C, it’s been all As and Bs so hopefully, they’ll see the improvement since graduating HS.

Junior UCI to UCLA transfer under the Business Economics Major

I just wanted to get an idea of my chances. Thanks in advance to everyone that replies!

I’ve completed all requirements and have achieved the following:

GPA: 3.92 Cumulative
Extra Curricular Activities: UCI Entrepreneur Society Active Member since Fall '08, Currently Participating in SCORE (Counselor’s to America’s Small Business) workshops with certificate upon completion.
Work: Internet Marketing and Sales position at a Small Business for ~4.2 years (2006-present, 12 hours a week)…grew the business by over 30% in terms of profits.
Looking at a 4.0 for Winter '10 Quarter (they allow you to update your app, so UCLA admissions might see this)
I’ve done Extensive Volunteer-work throughout High School (They allowed you to list this on the application, but I don’t know how much they care about it)

Ahh interesting that you mention that. UCB’s 3rd most important factor when evaluating applicants is grade trend. First is GPA and prereq/IGETC completion. With that upward trend, and also considering that you took that one class in high school, I would say you have an even better chance at UCB. I would say that you’re still a slight reach though.

@ sandaboy: I like your chances. Everyone likes to say that UC-UC transfers have a major disadvantage, however, it really isn’t as impactful as many suggest. There’s evidence that supports this, but I’m too busy to search it out now lol.

That being said, I really like your EC’s and work experience. Considering your 3.92 in addition to these things, I think you have a really good shot at UCLA. I would estimate around 75% chance.

Major: Computer Science/Electrical Engineering
GPA: 3.24something
UC GPA: *** is that anyway?
Applying to: UCSD, UCD
Prereqs: As far as physics 1/calc 2 (I hope)/ other non-major crap
IGETC: No, but tons of crap that applies.
ECs: NONE
Essay: They were quite good. I have an A in my English class
Work: NONE

Math= Started with intermediate algebra in CC, something like:
A int algebra
A trig
B precalc
F calc 1 [online, bad idea]
C calc 1 hard teacher
Physics Series = C + hoping for C [ugh]
Chem Series= B + C
Programming = All As, B in last class (teacher was also a nazi)

Looking at all of you child prodigies makes me think I should have reconsidered UCR lol :D

3.24. Ya. Oh, and an 1850 SAT they won’t be seeing (thank god).

Sometimes I wonder what happened to the smart little kid everyone loved inside of me.

@ sandaboy: No problem man. haha yeah I should really change that location. I’m pretty much only hoping for Berkeley at this point. If I don’t get in, I’m actually considering staying another year at my CCC as a legitimate possibility. Thanks for wishing me luck, and I wish ya the best as well!

@ wwlink: I don’t think any of us claim to be child prodigies lol. I mean I dropped out of high school (just to anecdotally put things into perspective).

Anyway, your UC GPA is the GPA that you calculate from ONLY your UC-transferrable classes. Your overall GPA, believe it or not, is irrelevant. Only your UC GPA will apply when the UC’s evaluate you.

Assuming that GPA remains, or stays very close within that range, I’d say you have a solid shot at both those schools. From everything I’ve read on this board, everyone with a 3.0+ was accepted to UCSD last year (as a transfer of course).

Davis will be close. I’d say you have an ok shot though. 50% or so.

i feel so stupid i didnt drop that class. i have a 2.97 this is so neuwijioejwiejwoifgnweiognwergn i can’t describe my anger. i doubt they care i’m retaking it.

Don’t feel horrible if you don’t get in. I know you guys are frantically searching up stats of people who applied to “chance” your admission, but really, is there anyone who can say for sure? Just relax and wait.

I know some somewhat-perfect individuals who do well in everything and did not get in, while an average person with decent grades and extra curricular got accepted. Luck… has a lot to do with it. Of course be excited about the decisions, but don’t be crushed if it’s not what you expect.

biochemistry major
