@ jesslys: I think that you’re in, but Communications is so impacted that you never really know. There were kids last year with 3.95 GPA’s being rejected. I think that your essay and EC’s will be the primary determinant of admission, and to me, it seems like you exceed expectations in both. For that reason, I would say you’re in.

@ beatpedo: Damn, you’re so borderline. This is a tricky one. Your upward trend should help you, but the UC’s are so strict on GPA. I don’t think you’ll get into UCLA, but at UCSB, you should have a solid shot. Plus, your EC’s/work experience are really good.

ya i figured lol. freshmen year screwed me 2.3/2.4 but I have been well above 3.0 since (2more years). I’m counting on the fact that my major is so small…2/3 applicants a year haha

Applying to: UCLA(Soc), UCB(Soc), UCSD(Comm), UCI(Social Eco), UCSB(Soc),UCSC(Soc)

In: UCSD, UCI, UCSB, UCSC

Prereqs: UCLA 2/3 done by this spring UCB completed

IGETC: Done by this spring

TAG/TAP: None

ECs: PTK, Volunteer San Diego( pretty much every weekend since Fall 2008), volunteer at
Latino/Latina children community center ( mostly academic support every Thursday night), Dean’s list every semester

Essay: I’d say…8/10 I talked about how an experience of school bully in Japanese high school led me to major sociology. My writing tutors said very strong, but I hate having high expectation to myself

No part-time jobs

Other: I know the fact that, for international students, chances to get into UCLA and UCB are very slim and highly competitive, especially for social science dept.

@ alex: You’re in at Berkeley, and are a bit of a reach for UCLA due to your missing prereq. Missing 1/3 is pretty big…Did you just not take it, or is it not offered at your CCC?

To emilsinclair9:
Thank you so much for the prompt response!
I’m completing social calculus right now and done this semester.
I heard it is safe to complete all prereqs by the end of spring semester…
Should I have done all prereqs by prior to this Spring?

Oh no, you’re good! It’s fine to complete prereqs in the spring. You’ll have all of them done for UCLA by the end of this spring then? If so, you’re definitely in.

Also, what’s social calculus? That sounds really interesting, and is not offered at my CCC.

Major: History
UC GPA: 3.67
Applying to: UCLA, UCI (Accepted)
Prereqs: All done
IGETC: Will be done currently missing one class which I am now taking
TAG/TAP: TAP certified
ECs: Work for my parents at their restaurants about 20 hrs a wk
Essay: Not great- mediocre.
Other: Did horrible in high school, barely graduated. Did not apply to any schools after high school. In CC first semester i got a D in econ. Made it up and got a B. Then got a C in psychology second semester. After that mostly As a few Bs.

Avg GPA admitted last year for UCLA History was 3.7…you are pretty close to that. TAP helps, so I think you have a decent chance. 20hrs a week is a lot so that’s good. I think you have a good shot 75%+ chance imo.

Chance Me?

UC-UC Transfer Applicant

Current College: UC Irvine

Current Major: Business Economics

UC GPA:3.933

Applying to: Business Economics @ UCLA

Prereqs:All Done.

ECs:UCI Entrepreneur Society Active Member since Fall '08,
Currently Participating in SCORE (Counselor’s to America’s Small Business) workshops with certificate upon completion. Dean’s Honor’s list all quarters. Some Volunteer-work throughout High School.

Work: Internet Marketing and Sales position at a Small Business for ~4.2 years (2006-present, 12 hours a week)…grew the business by over 30% in terms of profits.

Essays: 8/10 (good but not amazing)

What do you think?? Thanks to everyone who responds! I’m kinda sweatin balls because I’m a UC-UC applicant :(

sandaboy: looks like you have a really high GPA. However, I heard that UCLA’s economics major is extremely competitive. Your work experience will probably set you apart from other applicants (the fact that you helped the business grow 30% in profits?)

Anyways, I think you have 80% chance of getting in, if not as an econ major, perhaps your alternate major.

edit: Oh wait you’re transferring from UCI? I don’t know how that works exactly (as in if they give you guys priority). I would assume you would have even better chances since it’s a more reputable school?

@ Bruin: TAP has an 89% acceptance rate. This indicates that 9/10 are admitted. If you’re close to the average GPA admitted and have prereqs done, I foresee no reason (other than maybe a terrible fall semester) that would lead to a rejection.
