*Official Fall 2010 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

^ u need 60 units to transfer, but if u get that extra 5, id say ur in at UCR.

@smoser = 4.00 prereq, good ec’s, igetc = i’d say more than 70% to get in.
@bear = get those things taken cared of. your GPA is good to go.
@balagan = VP of 2 diff clubs? If you really dedicate a lot of time to both (projects, stuff like that) you’ll get it. Otherwise, they only look like you’re a VP for 2 mickey mouse clubs.

Other: attended community college full time as a senior in high school, this is my first year in college at UCSB and I will be a junior next quarter.

Does it look weird that my first 56 units come from De Anza, then 34 units come from UCSB, and then my final 17 units come from both De Anza and Foothill college (had to return to CC because of fee increases)?

I’m beginning to realize these forums run a little haywire from time to time…in the last several post it seems no one, iZychr excluded, actually did the “chancing” this thread is built for. I’m gonna try to vindicate myself for being a lazy ■■■■■■■ on every other thread…

peterr86: great GPA. B in calc shouldn’t be a killer but econ is always a crowded and sough-after major. UCI is a no problem and I’d say that you’ve got a terrific chance at Cal

hanucol: GPA is definitely cause for concern but I imagine that they would look at your essays and EC’s, and if they do they’ll certainly be impressed. I was crew cap in hs too!

smoser2: you’re being facetious. IN! UCD for sure. I understand LA is a GPA processing machine so you’re pretty solid there. Cal will appreciate some of your ECs. You’re into one of the 2 no doubt.

balagan: Better chance at UCSD with switched major (bios still tough of course)…UCI & UCSB I’d say in but don’t know how restrictions (budgetcuts!) on transfer admissions will play out so it’s a toss-up. LA & Cal look like reaches but then again who am I (3.3gpa) to say that ;)…aizeh balagan

bear: ditto calbear

iZychr: good shot at both!

zeliums: I know nothing about your majors…I’d just say to reference uc stats finder website and see how you hedge against past applicants

Krazyguy89: UCI - IN, UCSD is a good shot but tough and LA more so…I hear UC’s don’t look as favorably at UC-UC transfers as from cc’s

SLOmustang174: lack of EC’s will hurt with Cal & GPA may not be high enough for LA. But it’s still competitive so you’ve got a great shot. UCI & SB are the closest things to “safetys” and again, good shot with UCSD

ucbhopeful2010: if you explain your situation they’ll be sympathetic. Good GPA. Just keep in mind that preference is given to cc students (or so I’m led to believe) and social sciences is pretty packed to being with.

Phew, sorry if that was a bit messy or ridiculous, penned in a few minutes as my caffeine sustenance begins to ebb away.

good luck all!

Major: Molecular and Cell Biology @ Cal, Pre-Biology @ UCSB
GPA: 4.0

I had a D in a course, but I retook it and received an A (would this effect me even if I took this class in high school the first time around?)

Units: 91 units by end of spring
Pre-Reqs: Finished
IGETC: Finished
E.C.: VP of Phi Theta Kappa Chapter, Founder of SACNAS Chapter, Independent Research in Biology
Personal Statements: Bad to (maybe) decent

Major: American Studies- emphasis in health care in america for UC Berkeley and UC Davis
Communications for all other UC’s
Community College GPA: 3.76
Applying from: CCC
Applying to: UCB**, UCLA, UCSB, UCD, UCSD
Prereqs: Done, 4.0 for UCB, 3.8 for UCLA, 3.76 for rest
TAG: UCSD, UCSB, UCD
IGETC: Certified
ECs: Local Hospital Volunteer (4years-present), Oakland Emergency Center Intern (2 years-present), Private Practice volunteer (3 years-present), School campus Biology tutor (last semester), founder of a chapter through the Save Darfur Coalition in my town, head of Public Relations for school’s film club (last semester-present), physical therapy intern (all of last year), PHI THETA KAPPA (international honors society), Association of Psychology Undergards-club member at UCB
Essay: I would say an 8/10 (everyone said they were good. 1) leaving family picnic to chase down a homeless man and gave him my shoes. he didnt accept them. though we communicated. 2) how all of my internships and volunteer opportunities have developed a macro sense of healthcare instead of once micro/medicine thus leading me to the study of healthcare. aimed at UCB and UCD
Other: --used all of additional comments to explain how i attended UCSC for just one week last year until i had to withdraw to help my family with the family business and work. I had no record there and even though i was only able to take 9 units my first semester back, ive caught up and will be transferring with the whole 70.
–I’m concurrently enrolled at UCB this school year through the concurrent enrollment program at my CC. I took a nutrition class last semester AND GOT AN A!!! I am commuting again and taking a Plant Microbial Bio class this semester…thank God we only have to keep a 3.0.
–Have one W on my transcript from last semester, but I am retaking it this semester (not from major prereqs).
–Held job for 4-present years.
–Rigorous schedule regardless of fairly easy prereqs

SO SO SORRY FOR THE OVERWHELMING AMOUNT OF INFO!!! Im just literally freaking out and anxious beyond anything I have ever felt. I would really appreciate just a super quick chance! if not for all of them, just for UCB!

PLEASE!

Major:
Political Economy (PEIS) @ Cal
Economics @ UCLA
UC GPA: 3.72
Applying to:Cal, UCLA
Prereqs:All will be completed by the end of spring quarter
IGETC: Done
TAG/TAP: None
ECs:
Worked at NASA managing assets databases (8 month contract) 25 hrs/week
PTK (honor society)
Essay: Pretty good, reviewed by a Cal admissions officer from the college of letters and science.
Other: I was in middle college so I took a full college and full high school course load at the same time, while working 25 hours a week, mentioned it in my essay.

@corinnejay

if you’re coming from a CC, then i’d say your chances are pretty good. and depending on your cc, whether near LA or Berk, i’d say you have a better chance at the nearer one. But still i’d say like 65%%? just because your pre-reqs arent done and and your majors are tough…admissions will use anything do determine a better apps from each other.

To clear up my prereqs not being done, all are done for UCLA, and the only one that’s not done for Berkeley is one which was not offered at my school so I will be doing it at another school next quarter. I am from a community college, and I live in the bay so Berkeley is the closer one. Thanks

Okay Imma play the assuming game. Imma post some of my predicted stats. Oh and this is a repost. Just to get another opinion.

Major: Applied Math @ UCB, Econ @Davis
UC GPA: 3.5, let’s say 2A’s/2B’s per semester

IGETC: completed

Essay: not epically awesome but explains stuff. like i was in a nursing school (forced by parents T_T) abroad before coming here, and my passion for my major.

My location is Norcal and i am asian.

As long as the applicant is in-state, why would location have any importance?

I feel kind of embarrassed asking you all chance me as im sure no one else here has a gpa worse than mine, but here it is.

GPA: 2.82 ( hopefully should be above 3 by end of spring but i dont think it matter now )
UCSD for econ
UCD for managerial econ ( got TAG )
UCI for econ
UCB ( for socio , yeah it might sound funny with my low gpa )
IGETC: to be completed by Spring 10
Good ECs
Good Essay
do i have some chance for ucsd and uci for econ or no?

@don2009 you apply to riverside or Merced?

I believe that Irvine/SD/Davis average gpa for admittance is around 3.2~ so i would say pray
you got about a 20% shot i would say if your E.C is incredible.

How did you do in the major pre-req classes aka Econ1/2 Calculus 1/2 if you got A’s than that would help tremendously also

@olivertwist i believe as some part of the evaluation process your proximity to the school makes a difference in their decision as well

@ peterr86, no i did not apply to merced or riverside… but i regret not applying to ucsb and ucla :stuck_out_tongue:
In my pre reqs i got Bs and Cs … i dont have any W’s … was too lazy to drop classes in the middle :P… i know this wont help but its too late to do anything  i’m hoping ucsd accepts me as they got one of the better econ programs, otherwise i will have to fall back on davis. I havent seen ucsd campus but i do like ucd alot.

@Oliver_Twist

It’s nothing formal, as in a TAP, TAG or whatever it’s just an assumed deal between local CC’s and local universities. for example, my CC because of it’s location (i’m assuming is it’s location) is the #1 feeder school into UCB.

Last semester there was a very small fraction of students accepted into UCLA while hundreds into UCB. could be the students decisions not to apply really far away, but i’m sure universities have developed a sense of relationship with a CC. nothing confining, just oh…CC of XYZ…were familiar with you guys and what you have to offer.

i’m new, so please don’t kill me lol.

@ANYONE
mind chancing me? :[ i’m new (joined yesterday) and i’ve gotten 0 replys. my confidence is depleting :/
