*Official Fall 2010 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

@ucbhopeful298
How many units do you have?

I’d say your 1st essay sounds a little dramatic, but I’m no admissions officer.

All those EC’s, you should be in at either Cal or LA.

@don, i’m sorry, i have no idea what your chances would be with such a gpa, though i’d guess from almost no chance all the way up to about a 30% chance; with a much better chance at irvine, then lower chances at davis, then sd, then berkeley…but with good EC’s and good essays and hopefully with admissions officials in a good mood when reviewing your app, who knows? i’d say you at least have a chance…

@ucbhopeful, i don’t know much about your major, but i’m pretty sure you have a really really good chance at getting into all of those schools, (though cal and la occasionally make some baffling decisions)

Can someone chance me? I don’t think anyone did. I’m on page 2 at the bottom.

@don, I hope you applied to Santa Cruz.
@Ucbhopeful298; TL;DR. I am sure you got into every school. Don’t worry.
@zychr Berkeley is a big reach. You still have a chance. You’ll probably get in everywhere else. You should have applied @ UCLA’s econ/math…
@corinnejay: You have a excellent shot, but not slam dunk.

okay, wow thebigshow…those are really good stats…i’d say you have a great chance everywhere…econ’s a tough major to get into at cal or la…but i’d say you have a really good chance, especially with those ec’s and good essays on top of an above average gpa…and though i’m also an econ major, i’m afraid i don’t actually know much about the different programs…>_> though from what i’ve heard ucsd has a really good econ department…though it’s just word of mouth, and i believe sb and davis have a couple of notable econ professors in their departments…and as to which schools give the best opportunities, i have no idea, sorry :\ though i would also like to know now…

@lomkh

So, you are doing Haas and UCLA Econ? I am sure you are in at all those schools, but there are no guarantees.

I also didn’t get any chances earlier so i’ll post again but i think my stats are generally solid, excusing my essays which are slightly below average…i mostly just want to know how being a 1 year transfer affects one’s chances…

Major:Business Admin./Econ
UC GPA: 4.0
Applying to: UCLA (econ), UCB (haas/business)
Prereqs:All but 1 major prereq already done, that and breadths will be done by spring
IGETC:Completed by winter
TAG/TAP:No
ECs: honors program, vp in chapter of phi theta kappa (honors society), worked at subway for 4 or 5 years (been promoted to shift manager), unpaid accounting internship at a software firm, quite a bit of volunteer work with a non-profit committed to rebuilding neighborhoods in war-torn areas (led a side project to send 1,000 pairs of shoes to poor people in Gaza, mostly kids), won a couple of awards senior year of high school through future business leaders of america at the state level (6th in economics, 4th in management decision making, it was through a brand new chapter so had no idea what to expect)
Essay: i’m a rather poor writer so even with a lot of revision i believe they’re just decent at best…

also, i’m a one-year transfer and the first one in my family to go to college

thanks thebigshow, i hadn’t seen your response when i reposted, yea, i’m doing haas and la econ…though if i get into haas i’m gonna double in econ since econ is really my primary interest, and business is actually my 3rd interest but i can’t complete bio requirements in 1 year and i really want to leave cc asap lol

Major: doubling in english & sociology
UC GPA: 3.17-3.23
Applying to: UCI, UCSB, UCSD, UCD
Prereqs: all finisihed
IGETC: all finished
TAG/TAP: for UCI and UCD
ECs: 1 environmental club, tutoring part-time, and internship related to major
Essay: wrote about my internship and just about why i want to be a writer, etc. im pretty good at writing essays so im not too paranoid. my dream school is irvine right now, so im happy i got TAG. although I heard TAG doesnt always work?

@ iZychr, I have 53 units completed and I am taking 18 this semester (kill me). So total of 71, though only 70 count towards graduation (says the transfer center at berkeley).

@ thebigshow, you are very very qualified for every school. even berkeley. though same thing goes for me and you and every other person that should be in, it becomes a numbers game with all these qualified apps :[. though you should be in i’d say, your EC’s should bump you up and over! Though i found it interesting how you didnt TAG with those schools that offered it? how come?

@ don, :/. If people are skeptical about places making baffling decisions, then i think all of those schools you applied to are reaches. unless you have something under your belt that we don’t know about.

@snowbound0714, I say you have a pretty good chance at even the schools you didnt TAG into. the reason I say that is because i’ve heard rumors of people not getting accepeted even though theyve tagged. BUT! I’d put you through if your essays are very good.

@ lomkh, haas haas haas lol. there are always the haas applicants with the 4.0’s lol. but I would put your through actually. mainly because of the last points you just made. you’ll give them a fairly unique type of applicant so I thing mor attention will be given to you…which is good cause your stats are good.

thanks everyone who chanced me! if you havent, and would be generous enough to, i’m on page 7. sorry i didn’t get to everyone, i got class at 9! uggh calc

Hey ucbhopeful298, you are in at UCSD, UCSB, UCD easily. I would also say that you are in at UCB. UCLA is a major reach just because communications is ridiculously impacted. Considering that you have already taken a class at UCB (and received an A), along with your 3.76 GPA and volunteer work at hospital etc, you should be fine. How were your personal statements? Do you have a strong upward trend?

Btw I have one more question lol. How is Calculus? I dropped it already this semester, even though I need it for premed requirements. I guess I’ll do it over summer or in the fall at UCB or UCD. Let me know what you think of it, or if you think even someone who has never taken precalc (such as myself) could handle it.

Thanks man!

Chance my girlfriend and me!

Me:
First year transfer. I have a pretty intensive schedule if that matters–22 units in the spring.
MAJOR: Political Economics, Political Science
GPA: 4.0
APPLYING TO: UCB (Poli Econ), UCLA (Poli Sci)
IGETC: Finished by spring 2010
PREREQS: (Here’s the killer). 0/4 finished. Finished all required courses by end of spring, and 2/3 recommending courses at same time.
TAP/ TAG: TAP for UCLA, my CC doesn’t offer agreements with UCB >:O
ECs: Honors program, Writing club, business club, but focused primarily on high school e.c’s such as debate team and Junior Statesmen of America (JSA)
ESSAY: 1st one pwns, 2nd one… not so much. 9/10 and 7/10. (I’m a good writer)

My girlfriend:
Also a first year transfer.
MAJOR: English Literature
GPA: 3.74
APPLYING TO: UCB, UCLA
IGETC: One left. Finishing spring 2010
TAP/ TAG: Same situation.
PREREQS: So the thing is, she originally planned to transfer to LA as her first choice and has 3/4 prereqs for LA finished. But she had a change of heart and now is focusing on getting into Berkeley. Her CC only offers 1/4 of the major prereqs she needs, but she’s taking classes extremely similar. Finished by end of spring.
ECs: Tons o’ ****.
1 of 3 student electees for SPAS (Student Preparation and Success Council)
Vice President of community service club, Culture Shock Club
Activities Coordinator for another community service club, Circle K International (Kiwanis)
ICC Rep for Writing Club
Honors society member, Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS)
Interned at two law firms
Summer job/ volunteer work (+100 hours) at Walnut Public Library
Helped parents out at their restaurant fall 2009
ESSAYS: Meh. First one’s good, second one won’t help or hurt. 8.5/10 and 8/10

BE HONEST. SHIET

@Adampadam123

Going off assist you say you have completed 0/4 pre-reqs? i see 6 pre-req courses you can take

2 Calc 2 Econ Stats and history

I assume when you say “Finished all required courses by end of spring” You mean 2 or 3 of the above 6

I would say your shot are low if you don’t have Calc/Econ classes completed since a majority of applicants will. It’s impossible to do those 6 classes in 1 semester too i believe

Your G.F on the other hand should be fine as long as she finish igetc and completes the 1 classes avaiable

Hey y’all, I figure we’re in this together so let’s share and wait in anticipation:

My name’s Calvin. I’m a 22 yr old from Los Angeles. I go to Pierce College, a CCC. In high school I had 7 AP’s, 2 time national scholar, 1390 SAT (out of 1600), Captain of Debate team, 3.7 weighted GPA. All that junk.

But after a lengthy divorce as a kid me, my mom and sis were homeless for 8 months. After we had a home I always fed the homeless on Thanksgiving and what not cause I knew what it was like to have nothing but in junior year of high school I saw it wasn’t enough and founded a non-profit called U.F.I.S.H. that trains the homeless in basic jobs and sets them up with employment contracts at places like Wal Mart and Home Depot.

After it began becoming a success I really could give a crap less about school so I didn’t apply to any colleges and focused on my nonprofit for the last 3 years but then I realized I want to be a civil rights attorney and need an education. So I’ve been at Pierce the last year and a half and still work 30-50 hrs a week as the founder of the umbrella organization ‘Pointe Hope Foundation’ with my closest friends and volunteers doing philanthropy and fund raising around San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

As far as stats I have a 4.0 GPA, I’m a Philosophy major, my IGETC will be finished in Spring, my last pre-req will also be finished in Spring (except one of my Berkeley major classes that my college doesn’t offer). I’ve completed 27 units, 21 more through AP’s and 17 more coming in spring.

Anyways, that’s me. Nice to meet everyone here and thanks for whatever chances I get. Good luck! :)

dude your story is incredible you are in 100% imho that a lot to do starting your own non profit

Does your organization have a website i might donate a few bucks

Thanks so much man, I appreciate it. Yeah it’s pretty much what I want to be doing for the rest of my life lol

We’re always looking for volunteers, donations and help. U.F.I.S.H. is a division of Homeboy Industries which you can donate to here: [[HOMEBOY] industries](http://www.homeboy-industries.org/)

Also, under the name Pointe Hope Foundation we’ve been involved with programs like Community School Parks (which turns inner city elementary schools into mini parks for better learning and environmental improvement) which you can donate to here: [People For Parks - Los Angeles | Community School Parks December 2009](<a href=“peopleforparks.org - This website is for sale! - peopleforparks Resources and Information.”>peopleforparks.org - This website is for sale! - peopleforparks Resources and Information.)

And a program I co-founded two years ago called [Ever]After[All] in which we go to different elementary, middle and high schools just talking about tolerance especially in a city like LA where we have to live together whether we like it or not lol: homeboy-industries.org/everafterall_tolerance

Let me clarify: the prereqs for Political Econ. are an introductory economics course, a political science course, a course that must be taken at Berkeley, and one of three stats courses–only the first of which are offered at any CCC.

Additionally, two semesters of calculus and a semester of history are ‘strongly recommended.’ During the spring semester, I will be taking all of these (as well as a few additional polisci classes, for a total of 22 units), except the second semester of calculus. From what I’ve read, Poli. Econ majors at UCB are never required to take calculus for the major.

Thanks again for the help :)

@ emilsinclair9

thanks for the chance! I’m not banking on UCLA, just thought i’d check it off and hope for the best. Everything I’ve done has been geared towards UCB, so i’m hoping for the best :/. thanks again. My grades…eh. first semester back from UCSC i took nine units, then 22 units, then 9 units in the summer, then 18 this past fall, and 18 again. ive averaged just 1 B a semester, though my units have increased drastically. though grade wise ive stayed consistent…which doesnt hurt or help me lol.

and my personal statements were good. people said they were very dramatic…though it was all true lol. but overall…it was difficult to lean both essays towards the direction of my UCB major and other UC majors…but i tried :/. 8/10.

Calc is brutal. I’m already regretting taking it…especially since it has nothing to do with my majors…im taking it just in case i change my mind down the road. I say stay dropped because you’ll just increase complications with your app and such during the final stretch of decisions, though do try and take it in the summer–you’d rather take it at your CC than at a UC…trust me haha. Its just the more sensible thing to do. You’d leave more time at your UC for more classes - stress.

@thelongshot

I’d have to disagree with your username haha. you have a good shot! that is quite the story-i hope you were able to convey most of it to admissions.

@Adampadam123

Honestly i’ve never seen your path done that way with 0 recorded grades for major pre-reqs

All the classes listed should just say Required for UCB if you look back at last year very few got admitted to UCB without full assist completion.

All i would say is good luck you have a good foundation gpa but no major gpa i can’t tell you how that help you either way or hurt.

Although i do believe your right about not required to take calculus

http://sis.berkeley.edu/catalog/gcc_view_req?p_dept_cd=POLECIS</a></p>

Didn’t see it in their catalog
