*Official Fall 2010 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

Thelongshot,

I recommend also applying for transfer at Stanford University. Your story expresses the entrepreneurial “head first” attitude that Stanford looks for.

Major: Cultural Anthropology, Medical Concentration
UC GPA: 3.80
Applying to: Berkeley, UCLA, Irvine, Davis, Santa Barbara
Prereqs: All Completed
IGETC: Completed
TAG/TAP: none
ECs:
o Worked in the medical field for 1 year as an EMT for a local ambulance company.
o Treasurer, Gamma Beta Phi (College Honor Society)
o Photographer, Canyon Call (My college’s publication)
o Won 1st place Feature news photo for my college @ JACC (Journalism Association of Community Colleges)
o Currently employed by my college as an English Tutor
o Varsity Runner - Two years Cross Country runner in High School
o Community service: participated in various outreach and volunteer projects with Gamma Beta Phi, I don’t have an exact count of how many hours I’ve spent though.
Essay: I wrote it, I think it was good

I was told my EC’s were weak - is this true, or do you think they are good? When people say they have 100+ community service hours, what does this mean? Do these have to be ‘special,’ state-moderated hours? Or would the fundraisers for basra/haiti that my club does count?? And who keeps track of all these hours? And how do I prove that I spent those hours?

Note: I really want to get into Berkeley, that is my goal.

@solidblu

Whoever said your ECs are weak is a moron. You have a diverse portfolio of activities, awards and even some experience in the medical field (EMT) which is related to your major.
You’ll get in.

Updated Stats-

UC-UC transfer
Major: Environ Econ and Policy (UCB), Business Econ (UCLA, UCI), Econ (UCD, UCSD)
UC GPA: 3.6 (read my Other section)
Prereqs: Completed by spring
IGETC: Already finished UC Reciprocity
ECs:

 • Business internship at Fortune 500 company this summer. Created a program that has been very successful (implemented in USA and is on track for over a million dollars in revenues this year)
 • Year long business internship this year
 • Econ related internship winter + spring 09
 • Worked for a political campaign
 • Clubs (one is econ based), econ + math tutoring, 3 years varsity sports, volunteering

Essay: 8/10. Wrote about how my interests in econ developed. Also wrote about how I went from an average intern to a person who has regular meetings with the CEO.

Other: Had a very serious issue fall quarter 09 (caused my grades to decline- C+,C+,A+) that is documented and how I overcame it. Ever since that mishap, I’ve gotten straight A’s or A-'s. Straight A’s in my transferable upper div econ classes. #1 choice is berkeley (non-impacted major)

We’re both first year transfers. Have impressive, intense +20 unit per semester schedules.

My boyfriend:

MAJOR: Political Economics, Political Science
GPA: 4.0
APPLYING TO: UCB (Poli Econ), UCLA (Poli Sci)
UNIT COUNT: 61 by end of spring 2010
IGETC: Finished by spring 2010
PREREQS: (Here’s the killer).
1/5 finished.

For his MAJOR PREREQ REQUIREMENTS, he only has Econ 1 finished from his AP Macro Econ and AP Comparative Govn’t exams. Potentially excusable because the “Survey of World History” class isn’t offered at his CC and the rest (Microeconomics, Comparative Politics, and Stats) will be taken spring 2010 before transferring.
Regarding the RECOMMENDED COURSES, 2/3 (Civil War to Present and Calculus) will be finished by spring 2010 before transferring as well.

All of this is based accordingly to assist.org ([ASSIST Report: MTSAC 09-10 UCB Articulation Agreement by Major](<a href=“Welcome to ASSIST”>Welcome to ASSIST))

TAP/ TAG: TAP for UCLA, his CC doesn’t offer agreements with UCB
ECs: Honors program, Writing Club, Business Club
Focused primarily on high school e.c’s such as debate team and Junior Statesmen of America (JSA)
ESSAY: 1st one pwns, 2nd one… not so much. 9.5/10 and 7/10. He’s a strong writer though

Me:

MAJOR: English Literature
GPA: 3.73
APPLYING TO: UCB, UCLA
UNIT COUNT: 71 by end of spring
IGETC: One left. Finishing spring 2010
TAP/ TAG: Same situation. UCLA TAP, nothing for Berkeley.
PREREQS: For LA, 3/4. Berkeley, 0/4.
So the thing is, I originally planned to transfer to LA as my first choice and had a change of heart Now focusing on getting into Berkeley. My CC only offers 1/4 of the major prereqs I need (a class I’ve enrolled in for spring 2010), but for the 3 that are not articulated, I am taking classes extremely similar. All will be finished by end of spring.

ESSAYS: First one’s good, second one won’t help or hurt. 9/10 and 7.5/10

Okay.
BE BRUTALLY HONEST PLEASE.

@ mikei

Thank you very much, my college counselor said the same thing actually.
I’ll definitely look into it. It just seems so impossible but it couldn’t hurt to try I suppose.

@ CrystalJannee

I think you and boyfriend should be fine honestly. Pre-req’s are important so I think you probably have a better chance than your boyfriend even though his GPA is higher. But to be honest I think both you have a great chance at some top notch UC’s.

Good luck!

@Midnightgolfer

Decent to pretty good shot for Cal…did you do L&S or CNR? In at atleast 2 from UCD/UCSD/UCI. UCLA you have some chance, but nobody knows. GPA is killing you but you have really great ECs.

@Jane

You both should be fine. I would give you a slightly better chance than your bf though. In at atleast one of those schools, maybe even both.

Thanks ixr :D

It was someone on this site who said that, it did worry me a bit.

I’m very glad to hear you say otherwise :)

Sorry to go off topic here, but what are my chances at UCD, UCSC, and UCM with a 3.5 gpa and virtually no EC’s (might do some over the summer).

Edit: econ major. Also, assume that prereqs completed, decent essay, and IGETC completed

@Christian
With TAG you should be in.

@christian612

should be in for all 3 places with or without tag

Ok thanks guys

Why is the UC FAFSA deadline March 2nd?? We won’t even have our tax return done by then. How can we possibly fill FAFSA out?

@thelongshot

No need to thank me; I’m just being honest. My sister is a Stanford graduate school alum and she has many, many friends from Stanford. Trust me, you are their ideal applicant. The only problem is that you’ll have to take the SATs. Keep your grades perfect. Your SAT score shouldn’t be all that important because your experience definitely makes up for it; but it is still a requirement to apply. Just study for a few months and then take the SATs. I really think you have an excellent shot at acceptance there. Doors open for you when you have a Stanford degree and your nonprofit service will expand with ease. :slight_smile: Best of luck.

@solidblu

it’s for cal grant all you have to do is fill out “will file” under your parent and enter last years information when they file their taxes just update your fafsa

Your fafsa should update efc as well if there is a BIG difference but it’s so you can qualify for cal grants

trying to get some other opinions.

Major: Anthropology
UC GPA: 3.55
Applying to: UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCI

Other: 1 W. 2 F’s, & 1 D that were repeated and received all A’s in.

Major: Civil Engineering (but some schools don’t offer certain engineering majors)
Secondary: Applied Math
UC GPA: 2.85
Applying to: UCI (Civil), UCSB (Mech), UCSD (Structural), UCR (Mech), Pomona (EE - Mech and Civil are impacted), SLO (Civil), SDSU (Civil), Fullerton (Civil - already got in)

Essay: Every rep I talked to said the essay only matters if you apply for money (with such a low GPA, im just worried about getting in…) but 9/10 i’d say…
Other: Thyroid Cancer Survivor (diagnosed last Spring and got the good news just before the app update so I mentioned it =)

I know my GPA is terrible and there are no excuses. I’d really appreciate honest opinion though. Thanks guys!

@imendoza

UCI/UCSD average gpa is .5 higher so i’ll say very little shot… good shot at UCR and basically all the csu’s except SLO

@jbustos

50/50 shot at UCLA/UCB i would say in at SD/Irvine
