*Official Fall 2013 UC Transfer CHANCE thread*

Thanks for chancing me GSG 900 and yupper. I feel slightly more at ease knowing there is a chance (albeit a slim one). I will definitely return the favor when I (hopefully) transfer for the future chance inquirers.
If I don’t transfer this fall, I’ll see about TAG or TAP and raising my GPA…either that or I’ll transfer to an out-of-stater. (:
Best of luck to everyone!!

I’m curious, why you didn’t apply to any of the other UCs just as back ups? In my opinion UCB, UCLA, and UCSD are all going to be out of reach for you. And while you do have a very compelling, actually heartbreaking story, your GPA is just going to be too low for those schools. Also, out of the four you listed UCSD and UCSC don’t factor in the personal statements for admission, so I’m not sure that it will help you. UCSD and UCLA also tend to focus heavily on GPA (UCSD almost exclusively) during the application process. Berkeley is a bit more holistic and they look at everything. The average admitted GPA to your major at UCB, UCLA, and UCSD is somewhere around 3.8, 3.8 and 3.6 respectively and the difference between that and a 3.01 is pretty substantial. I do think with all your pre-reqs completed you will have a fairly good chance at UCSC, if I had to pick a number maybe 65%. For the others 15% UCB, 10% UCLA, 20% UCSD. I’m sorry if that troubles you, but I saw someone say 75% (being 3 times more likely to be admitted than denied) and I just wanted to give you a bit more realistic answer. Anyway, I just want to finish by saying that I’m sorry you’ve had such a difficult journey so far, but I’m sure where ever you end up you’ll be successful and will do great things. You sound like a very smart, determined, and resourceful person and I wish you the best.

@ Ryeina: +1 to what dilapidatedmind said. The truth is that it is getting more and more competitive each year at the UC campuses. It’s kind of a give and take with all the UC’s. Cal and UCLA look at your personal statement, but require a higher GPA. The other UC campuses will accept a lower GPA but don’t care about your PS. The best advice would have been to apply to more schools, its good to have a backup plan. You catch more fish if you throw out a bigger net. I actually applied to 12 schools(all UC’s excluding Merced, and 4 CSU’s) last year. LOL. Good luck to you though!

I’m a UC to UC transfer from UCM

Applying to UCSB UCSD UCLA for poli sci

Cumulative GPA is 3.66
Major GPA is 3.93

ECs not much other than Pre-law society and summer internship at a law firm

I only really want to go to UCSB the other schools I applied to was for ****s and giggles. I got a 4.0 for the Fall 2012 semester but idk if that counts for anything. I have about 73 units from my university plus 23 from ap credit as my understanding is that app don’t count against the unit limit. I’ve completed my GEs. Only thing I’m worried about is my limited amount of major classes that will count toward the schools I’m applying to.

Thanks for any chances!

In reply to dilapidatedmind and iDizzle: you guys are right, I should have applied to more schools but I only had a waiver for 4 schools and I was expecting my GPA to go up to ~3.40 but it went down after this fall semester. And I would have applied to state but they wanted one more physics class and I don’t want to stay another entire year at CC.

Yes I’ve had a very difficult journey, i’ve learned a lot from my failures and have improved substantially since my first semester at community college, however…I have some great news!
I won’t say where but out of the 3 out-of-staters I’ve applied to, 2 have accepted me! :smiley: I am absolutely ecstatic! Thank you all for sending positivity my way and for being realistic. I am very excited about this new chapter in my life, I see education as the ticket out of my current state of life. Ultimately, I want to inspire future generations of women and minorities to go into the STEM fields: so many of my child hood friends end up pregnant and living paycheck to paycheck…I don’t want that future for me. Good luck to everyone on their applications!!!

@ Ryeina: That’s good to hear! Congrats! So at least you have a back up plan! I was out of school for 4 years before going back to CC and it was a great feeling when I got my very first acceptance letter…granted, it was from CSUN but still. LOL. Good luck to you!

And yeah the waiver only gives you 4 UC’s and 4 CSUs but I figured I would spend the extra money on another 4 UC apps just for self validation to see if I could get into them or not. I ended up getting accepted to all 4 CSU’s and all of the UC’s except for Cal. LOL

Junior Level Transfer. English major at all schools, except UCSD (literature). Spent one semester at University of Arizona and then the past 2 semesters at a CC. Californian. Applied to UCLA, Berkeley, UCSD, and UCSB. I was going to apply to UCSB for the TAG, but the UCSB advisor told me not to bother as I was a “shoo-in” (I dont like that word) and didnt have enough time to apply. Will be IGETC certified after this semester. GPA of 3.61. Got a C in math and Biology (bio at UA) and a B in ASL and bio lab (lab also completed at UA). Otherwise, all As (all A’s in my English classes!).

Currics include waitressing to pay my own way through school (emphasized this a lot in my essays and when asked what I do with my money), English tutoring, newsletter editor of cal poly (I don’t go there but I’m in a club of theirs), and volunteered as a surgical assistant at a local animal shelter (irrelevant). At UA, I was in a sorority (is it okay that I included that?) and was president of my dorm.

I am taking all my English major classes that the school’s require this spring semester, so they won’t see grades for them. However, if they look at my past history, they should assume I would get A’s. If they do that.

@fran2thelamp

Just a question seeing as I want to major in English also. How many foreign language courses did you take? And about the English major classes you mentioned, you are taking Shakespeare and/or the other literature courses right?

applied to all UC’s besides riverside and merced.
Major: Asian american studies for la, b, d, i, sb
sd: ethnic studies
sc: sociology
gpa: 2.95

I know my gpa is really low, but it is a low impact major.

@shmohawk

I just took foreign language in high school. I am taking Shakespearean Lit and British Lit currently. What is your GPA?

@hannahhm
You may have made a mistake not applying to UCR or UC Merced. Berkeley 1%, UCLA 5%(average admitted GPA for your major 3.45), UCSD 20%, UCI 25%, Davis 30%, UCSC 35%. I think with a 3.0-3.1, you would’ve definitely gotten into a few of the ones you listed, but a sub 3.0 is really pushing it. UCR and UC Merced were more realistic targets given your GPA and if nothing else could’ve been decent back up choices.

Hey guys, would appreciate it if one of you would chance me! :slight_smile:
Applied to: Berkeley, LA, UCSD (TAG), UCSB
Major: Psychology; alternate major: Anthropology
Major Prereqs: done
IGETC: done
GPA: 3.71
TAP certified
Appreciate it!

@fran2thelamp

I’m only at a 3.2 unfortunately because I started out bad. I have had straight A’s for the past two semesters so hopefully the grade trend and my personal statement will help me. Did you write a really good personal statement? If so, I think you’re in at all of those schools

@ hannahhm: dilapidated is right, you should definitely have applied to UCR or UCM. I don’t see the other ones working out for you. I hope you applied to some CSU’s at least.

With that said, I applied as an anthro major (which is not an impacted major either) and was waitlisted for UCSD and UCI with a 3.5 GPA . Granted, I was eventually accepted, but still that should give you an idea of how competitive it’s gotten.

@alevy123: I think you have a good chance at UCSD(TAG of course) and definitely UCSB. However for LA and Cal I’m not too sure if you will get the psych major since its pretty tough. My brother had a 3.78 when he transferred to UCLA in 2011, he was rejected for psych but luckily he was also TAP certified so he got accepted for his alternate. He got accepted to Cal as well.

I’m an anthro major at UCLA and your GPA is very solid for that major so you can stop worrying! lol

Applying to UCI from IVC (one of the highest amounts of transfers to uci from a CCC)
GPA: 3.3~
(would be higher but im a one year transfer and a class i took during highschool and during the summer bring me down its like 2 C’s and like 6 A’s one C was japanese the other during summer was wr 1 my worst subject)
Every pre req is completed/will be everything so far is an A.
IGETC will be completed as well.
Eagle Scout.

@ rickyseg: did you TAG for UCI? Does IVC have some special arrangements with UCI for transfers? The “highest transfer rate” may be coincidental, a “feeder school” type thing. Like how Mt. SAC has the highest rate to Cal Poly(since its down the street), SMC has the highest rate to UCLA(since its down the street), FJC has the highest rate to CSUF(since it’s down the street).

I’m not sure if its a coincidental thing since one of the other schools that had around as many transfers to uci was up in norcal, as for TAG I didn’t I only started my first real semester of community college this year so I didnt have the 30 units (excluding ap credit) to apply.
heres the data for transfers from IVC
http://www.cpec.ca.gov/OnLineData/TransferPathwayChart.asp?Inst=305580</a>
Also I have every pre req on assist.org completed or in progress. my igetc will be done, and I’ll have an AA in psych.
my grade trend goes upward starting my first semester of senior year in high school it went like this
Ja 1 C then 2nd sem Ja2 F (had no time with 5 ap and sports didnt intend to go to a CC in the first place wanted to go to uci as a freshman this was just a hobby thing) then that summer WR1 C mus 27 A then last semesters 4 A’s (one was retaking JA 2)

Reason for Transferring: UCSC has no MechE department, and I am interested in a a ME minor. I also feel that I could benefit from a larger engineering school with a more established department

I applied to UCB, UCD, UCSD (Tag), and UCLA

Intended Major: Political Science
