I did not tag.
I think I need to wait for the rejections.

^I think it depends on how many pre-reqs you’ve completed and when. If you completed all or most of your pre-reqs by Fall and your grades were pretty decent in them, your chances may be pretty decent. There were a good number of people accepted to UCSD in the 3.3-3.4 range last year on these forums. Remember, it is just an average so there are people admitted below the average as well.

What are my chances for each school? Thank you!

Hey guys, I know this isn’t the correct thread for this, but I’m a high school student wondering what the general consensus/feelings are for UC Riverside in California. I recently became interested in the fact that they offer Neuroscience for undergrads. So, what do you guys think of it? Thanks!

@ttavakol: Comm studies is one of the most impacted majors at UCLA with an average GPA of 3.94 for transfers. Even though you aren’t a CCC transfer you have a great shot and at least you are a UC-to-UC transfer vs OOS. Good luck!

@ AlanDACHS: Are you a California resident? UCR is ranked second to last out of all the UC campuses. UCR is not a bad school, it’s just never anyone’s “target” school. UCSD, UCLA and UCSC also have neuroscience programs.

@ iDizzle: I’m actually from Florida. What other good neuroscience programs are there that aren’t as competitive as, say, Brown or Harvard?

@ AlanDACHS: Oh ok, that makes sense. No idea about Brown or Harvard. UCLA has a neuroscience program and UCSD has a Cognitive Science w/ specialization in Neuroscience. Are they good programs? Not too sure, but hell, its UCLA and UCSD. Since you would be applying as an out-of-state freshmen you should have a decent chance, granted your grades and scores are good. For UCLA the freshmen admit rate was 18% for California residents v.s 29% admit rate for out-of-state(they want your OOS money).

@iDizzle: Yeah I know UCLA and UCB are a long shot, but is there a chance I would get into UCSD? I just want to at least get in somewhere!

@ttavakol: I don’t think UCLA is a long shot. I would say you’re chances are pretty good. I’m not sure about Cal but you should be pretty good for UCSD also. Did you apply to Davis or SB for communication studies?

@iDizzle: I hope so! Just have to wait a few months and see. No I didn’t I only applied for those three schools, hopefully the other schools will see UCI not having a Communications major as a good reason for applying. Thank you for your help!

@AlanDACHS
Biological Sciences / Life Sciences tend to be very strong at both UCLA and UCSD and both typically rank among the top 10-20 in the nation in terms of graduate schools for those departments. UCSD, has an extremely strong Biology department, which includes a Physiology and Neuroscience major and separately has a Cognitive Science major, which is more interdisciplined but also pretty highly regarded. UCLA has a neuroscience major as well that’s just as highly regarded and is very competitive as it seems to be the most popular choice for pre-med students. At both schools the departments are heavily impacted and tend to be some of the more competitive majors to get admitted to.

Do you know what your plans are after undergrad? Both UCLA and UCSD have top medical schools on their campus, which is something to consider. In terms of medical school admission, there’s a ton of research going on at both schools. A lot of students, specifically here at UCSD work in labs at the medical school so that’s a great opportunity to consider. Really you can’t go wrong with either UCLA, UCSD, or Berkeley. If you care about rankings US News has all three ranked above Brown for the Biology grad school and Berkeley is tied with Harvard. I mention Biology because Neuroscience tends to fall into it as a subdivision. QS World has all three ranked among the top 10 programs in not just the US, but the world.

Wow, seems like so many people here are transferring with 4.0’s. :)

I applied to UCI and UCR as a Biological Sciences major.
I’m done with IGETC, but as far as major requirements go I still haven’t finished Calc and Ochem (doing that now), and the Physics requirement. My GPA is around a 3.5.

I’m an older re-entry student (30) and recently got out of the military. I used to be a Combat Medic and wrote about it in my statement. Other than that, I’m still active in the veteran community and work part-time helping other veterans deal with PTSD.

I don’t think my grades are as strong as some of the others that people have listed here, but I’m hoping that my ‘real world experience’ will help paint me in a better light. If there’s anything I else I need to mention, let me know! Good luck to everyone here.

@ MrAdobo: Did you apply to other UC campuses? I really hope you did. I’m pretty sure you will get into them, even with a 3.5. I’m an older student as well and got into many schools with a 3.5, life experience included in PS as well. I have a few buddies who went to UCLA after the Marine Corps.

@zooloo

Don’t give up the hopes man. Our stats are pretty similar, and I did not tag, either. We are on the same boat. Actually, I think you still have a very decent chance for UCI.

Let’s pray for being admitted. I believe it will work, lol.

@iDizzle: No, unfortunately those were the only two campuses I applied to. Would I have had a better shot at getting into other UC’s if I had applied to those?

@ MrAdobo: Yeah I’m sure you would have had a great shot at the other UC campuses as well. Grades aren’t everything and veterans usually get some kind of special treatment. You should have just applied to see if you would get in. I applied to 12 schools just to see what I could get into. LOL

Can someone fill me in on the application process timeline? When do the UC’s start releasing decisions (with the exception of LA and Cal)? I think UCR starts around now don’t they? Have you guys created portal accounts for all the campuses yet and which campuses have instructed to do so? My sister applied for 2013 Transfer as well. Interested to see where she got into. Thanks!

@ umairk27: ok thanks! Yeah, I remember the countdown to LA and Cal last year was killer! UCSD and UCI were playing games with us last year too. I didn’t get my decisions for UCI and UCSD until very late. UCI kept sending out irrevelant emails when everyone was on edge about admission…dangling the carrot on a stick if you will. LOL
