Hey guys for applying to ucla biz Econ, how big of a deal is it that I’m doing Calc 2 in the spring before transfer?(this won’t be completed for the application time)

My stats are otherwise okay, 3.93 gpa and tap.(my whole summary is on page 7).

hello, nervous time of year here’s my stats for the UC’s i’m applying to

applying to UCLA, UCSB, and Cal
Major:Geography
Transfer GPA through 1 year: 3.862
After this semester my gpa will be somewhere between 3.760 and 3.913

My general ed and major pre-reqs will be done by the end of this semester

I’m nervous because UCLA’s average gpa of transfer students admitted into the geography program rose from 3.57 in 2011 to 3.61 in 2012

@noduhlinda You have a decent GPA for UCLA’s Spanish with Linguistics program, so you might have a shot. I read your EC’s and some of them are spectacular. If you could somehow incorporate them in your essays, you’ll definitely be a unique applicant. Just don’t talk about the EC’s you did in High School. Talk about your current EC’s. Working a job to support your family and the tutoring stand out. Will have the transferable math and English done by this Fall? If you don’t, your chance will decrease.

@gopackgo555 You have a an above average gpa, so you might have a shot at UCLA’s geography department. Just write a killer Essay and you’re good to go. You are definitely in at UCSB, so I wouldn’t worry about that school. I don’t know too much about Cal;I say 50/50. Will you have the the transferable math and English done by this Fall? If you don’t, your chances will drastically decrease.

Hello, everyone. I’m also going to apply for fall 2013 UC transfer as a ccc student. right now i only have 2.7 transferable gpa. hopefully i will bump my gpa up around 3.2-3.4 by the end of this semester with only 40 units going into spring. my major is economics. Can somebody chance me for all the UCs besides ucsc and ucr? i’m feeling like i’m on the edge. So please help, thanks!

Hello

@tcccom How many prerequisites do you have completed? Are you 100% sure you can raise your GPA to at least a 3.2 by the end of this Fall? Will you have the transferable math and last English course completed by this Fall? Will you have IGETC completed? With a GPA of 2.7, you will literally get rejected by every school. Economics is a popular major. You have no chance at UCLA, Cal, UCSD and Irvine. 30/70 on UCSB and UCD. The only Universities where you might have a chance at-- if you raise your GPA to at least 3.2-- are UCSC, Merced and UCR, but you said you don’t want to go there. Is there a particular reason why you don’t want to try to get in at UCSC? If I understood that correctly, you said you will only have 40 transferable units done by this Fall? You must have 60 UC transferable units to transfer. If you are going to take 20 units during the spring, make sure to prepare yourself because that is not going to be easy. I would focus on that GPA.

@ucisee Political science is a selective major at UCLA and I can only assume it’s selective at UCB as well. Given that, your GPA is a little above average for UCLA. Your EC’s are decent, but don’t focus too much on your high school EC’s when you write your prompts. You’re an average applicant, so try to write a killer essay. You are definitely in at Irvine and UCSB.

@mermaker thanks for the input! yes i noticed political science is marked as highly selective at UCLA. Berkeley doesnt mention polisci specifically as a selective/impacted major, but berkeley itself id consider highly selective.

@Hockey I just looked at yours. From what I know, Economics is a very selective major; especially at UCLA and Berkeley. Your GPA is slightly above average for UCLA – by only .03. It’s honestly a 50/50 for both those schools. There are people on here who have gotten rejected with 4.0’s. That’s how it is with most of the impacted majors. The only thing you have to worry about is the prompts you have to write. If you can write a killer essay, your chances are pretty good. Focus on your current EC’s and not on HS. How are you currently doing in your classes? Do you feel confident you can pull a 4.0?

You’re definitely in at UCSD and UCSB, so I wouldn’t worry about those schools. I don’t know anything about USC, since this is a UC transfer thread.

@mermaker thank you so much for chancing me!

I have finished calculus 1, currently taking calculus 2 and macro, will be taking micro and Statistics at spring. so basically I will be finishing the basic major prereq and igetc for all the UCs by fall. I’m mostly sure I am gonna raise my gpa up around 3.3x or 3.4x, 3.2 will just be the worst case.

I know I have zero chance of UCB or LA unless miracle happens, so I mainly wanna know the chances of getting UCSD, UCSB, UCD and UCI. No TAG.

yeah right, this is another dilemma i’m thinking about, i will absolutely force myself to get over 60 units, but i wonder if with only 40 units to apply, it will hurt my chances.

@ tcccom As long as you complete the 60 required, you’ll be fine. My advice is to completely focus and your GPA. You need to raise it as high as you can. It seems that you’ll have a nice upward trend with your GPA. They will notice that and it will give you an extra edge. Maybe you can talk about that on your essay? There has to be a reason as to why you currently have a 2.7 GPA. I had the same situation you currently have. When I went back to current CC from a long term hiatus, I had a overall gpa of 2.02. I decided to retake the classes I failed and now my GPA is currently 3.25, and it will be higher after this fall because of another class I’m currently retaking. Around 3.5-6 at the end of this Fall. Definitely keep it up! If you have the money to blow, you can just apply to all the UC’s. You never know; some of them might waitlist you and then accept you later.

@mermaker we are on the same boat! i noticed you posted the stat of avg gpa admitted for UCSB and LA. Do you have the stat for davis? thought that davis would be my first choice to look forward. thanks!

I would appreciate any feedback

Hey guys,
Im applying to UCB, UCLA, and waiting on TAG for UCSC
Anthropology Major-all pre reqs done,IGETC done
3.79 GPA ~ 3.84 after fall…4.0 major gpa
Whadya think? Much Thanks :)

Thanks Mermaker. I feel confident that I can pull of a 4.0 this semester, and I’ve had a lot of professional help with my Prompt #1 on my personal statement (the one that relates to my major) and they said it was really good. My prompt #2 however, needs to be reworked but I can make it good. Although UCSD is a fantastic school, I have high expectations of myself and I want to go to UCLA or Cal. I just hope I’m not severely disappointed in the Spring.

SurfingAnthrplst you are the epitome of me. Just better lol. I also surf and I tagged UCSC for Anthropology hahah. I don’t know about Cal, but you are definitely in at UCLA. Their average admitted GPA was only 3.59 last year. I also talked to a representative fr UCLA and she said it isn’t hard to get accepted as an Anthro major.

@tcccom sorry man, Davis doesn’t release their stats. They are a little lenient when it comes to transfers. A lot people( from what I’ve seen on the forums) get accepted with 3.2 +

@ Mermaker: They definitely love “upward trend”. I went from a 1.5 from 05-07 to a 3.5 from 09-12 so that’s one of the things that will stop the app reviewers from passing on your app. Especially if they see that you’ve been doing something productive during your hiatus from school. During orientation they said that they see tons of apps that are the “same” and pass on them unless there is something special about it. So even if you have a high GPA but your personal statements are rather generic, you might be passed on since UCLA and Cal are the only ones that actually use your PS towards decision making.

@ SurfingAnthrpist: I think its safe to say that you’re definitely in. I got into all the UC’s except for Cal with my 3.5 for Anthro. FYI, for comm majors, I applied as a comm major for Davis, SB, and SD.
