Essay: Should be slightly above average.

Target Schools: UCB(Haas), UCLA(Business Economics), WUSTL, CORNELL,EMORY,UMICH, UVA, NYU(Stern), BC, Brandeis, UIUC, Northwestern.

^I would say no for Haas School of Business. Your pre-requisites might not transfer the way you think. I would also say no for UCLA as well, which has a ~12% admit rate for Business Econ. and an ~11% admit rate for transfer applicants from non-CA schools, also probably due to course articulation issues. Also high school stats do not matter, at least for the two UC schools you’re applying to. It seems that you are applying to a wide range of schools so you should be able to get into one of them. Good luck!

Does graduating from high school in California affect the chance of being accepted? I am attending a four year out of state school but my permanent address is in California and I graduated high school there (and still technically live there).

I know that I would likely pay resident tuition.

@oceanpartier You mean that the thing which will really hurt me is the prerequisites stuff? Or maybe I am trying to transfer to the best programs of UC’s. I have heard people told me that UCB Haas and UCLA Business Economics are the most selective…Will I have a shot if I change major into Economics?

@aaaa993:i don’t think high school matters at all. The only thing that would affect your chance at acceptance is you coming form an OOS university.

@NewbeeTransfer: It may be a combination of selectivity and because you are from an OOS university since not all the classes transfer. Your GPA is great which would be a sure thing at acceptance if you were transferring from a community college. For example, last year for UCLA, 564 of the 19,099 transfer applicants were OOS. Out of 564 OOS, only 46 were accepted and it does not say what major they were accepted to. In addition to that, only 10 of those 46 actually enrolled which leads me to believe that those other 36 that did not enroll were very competitive and likely got accepted to Cal or maybe private/ivy leagues.

Out of state students are not first priority.

@iDizzle: Thanks a lot for replying me. I know it is kind of too hard to get in top UCs for being from OOS. Do you think I have a shot for the other schools I am trying to apply to?
OOS really seems a hugeeee disadvantage for me …

@ NewbeeTransfer: Your GPA is very good and I think you do have a shot at being in the 8% acceptance rate for OOS students that are accepted. But just know that it is rather difficult since 80% of the transfers accepted are from California community colleges and the acceptance rate was 28% last year. I’m sure you have a chance at the lower tier UC’s as well but remember, if your classes don’t transfer to UCLA or Cal, than they won’t transfer to the other UC’s either. I think you may have a higher chance to transfer to the private schools. I actually know some people who went to Northwestern and Brandeis. I also know someone who got accepted to Cornell but decided to attend UCLA instead. lol

@iDizzle: That works for me as well!! Thanks a lot. Anyway, I decide to try to be the 8% guy. lol. NYU Stern or Brandeis will also be great for me.

CCC transfer
GPA: 3.40 (completed calc 1-3, linear, DE, all CS courses offered – Java 1-2, discrete structures, C programming – except computer architecture/assembly language)
Major: CS

Schools: UCD, UCI, UCSD

EC:
Developed open source IRC client
Computational physics honors project
Volunteering at hospital
Part time clerical work

My worry is how much I’ll be penalized for essentially having a wasted year with W’s and F’s, which I will have retaken or have done academic renewal by the end of this semester.

Thanks in advance!

@derse4444
Your application looks fairly solid.
However, doesn’t UCD and UCSD require a ton of calculus-based physics courses?
Perhaps you forgot to mention them, idk.
Anyways, I think you have an optimistic shot at all of your schools. Good luck!

@DescartesQ

I’ve looked over the transferable course list at assist.org and the respective UC CS program outline pages and it appears that chem 1-2 is an alternate series that will also satisfy the science requirement, which I have taken.

I hope I’m not misinterpreting it, but I’m fairly confident that chemistry is sufficient. I know that, for instance, UCLA requires physics with no exceptions.

CCC Transfer

Major: Biochemistry
Applying to: UCLA, UCB, UCSD, UCD, UCI, UCSC and NYU

Overall GPA: 3.883 (Got two B+ in Eng 2 and Philosophy)

-Took a chem and physics class at UC Berkeley, got a little involved with some clubs and a little research, nothing big.

There’s some other stuff, but I already forgot. I’m really worried about the overall GPA though. I didn’t think two B+ grades would bring it down that much; if it’s of any help to my application, I got them my first semester.

I also got a W my first semester since I didn’t want to get a B in Calc 1.

PLEASE CHANCE ME.

Personal Statements: I believe my personal statements are very strong.

@ Caracr: You’ve got a good chance at those schools! UCLA has a crazy comm program. Actually I was a comm major but I knew my 3.5 wouldn’t cut it for LA so I applied as an anthro major. I got accepted to SD, SB, and Davis, along with a bunch of CSU’s for comm but still decided to attend UCLA even though I didn’t get my major. UCLA has a crapload of affiliations with big name companies for internships and that’s why I decided to go to LA even though I didn’t get my major. Just last week apple, microsoft, intel, cisco, amway, and Texas instruments came for the weekly job fair. It’s awesome!

Overall CC GPA: 3.87 / 51 credits in quarterly academic year system (UW)
Washington state resident
Intended major: Aerospace Engineering(UCLA) / Mechanical Engineering (UCB, 2nd choice in UCLA as well)

My biggest concern is that I’m taking all of the prerequisite classes for engineering in my second year (current year) except the calculus series.
Here are the classes i have taken last year in order of highest priority.
-Calculus I,II,III (4.0, 4.0, 4.0) / 15 credits in quarterly academic year system
-English Composition 101, 102 (3.8, 3.8) / 10 credits
-Computer science 110 (4.0) / 5 credits (this class is prerequisite for transferable CSC class)
-Chemistry 139 (3.1) / 5 credits (prerequisite for transferable Chemistry class. Hated the instructor)
-Psychology 100 (4.0) / 5 credits (this is a transferable psychology class)
-Music 185 (4.0) / 5 credits
-Art ___ (4.0) / 5 credits
-CSC ___ (4.0) / 1 credit (Mathematica class which was required for calculus classes)

Please chance me!!!

Someone please chance me! I want to apply for the Linguistics major. I currently have a 3.38 gpa. I got three f’s on my first semester of cc due to medical reasons. I had to stop showing up. didnt drop them so I failed them. I already made up 1 and got an A. I’m making the other 2 up this semester. After these two are made up, assuming everything goes as planned, I should have a 3.8 gpa. I wont be able to do the one year of another foreign language requirement or the introduction to linguistics since its not offered in my school. I still need one IGETC class, a physical science, which I will do in spring next year. I also need to do intro to psychology, prereq for linguistics, which I can also do next spring. I want to apply to UCB, UCLA, UCSB, and UCSD. I think I can write a very compelling PS on me losing over 120 lbs. What do you guy think?

@ Gokuangus: You’re chances should be pretty good given the circumstances. None of the schools expect you to have the Anthro 33(linguistics) course done since none of the CCCs offer that course. I’m currently taking the Anthro33 course at UCLA during my first quarter. If the app reviewers see that you have a reason for your crappy grades and you get As while retaking them than you’re pretty much in.
