Official Fall 2014 Columbia Transfer Thread

Is there a general “Columbia Class of 2016” FB group out there?

Accepted!

Accepted as well! Creative writing and philosophy major. Does anyone know when we will hear back about financial aid and/or transfer credits?

Should we be expecting packets in the mail today? Latest Thursday?

@scottjb621‌ Financial aid is already posted online. You just need your columbia ID and you can login to view your aid.

Congrats to the admits. Columbia is a great school.

Also accepted!
I see that there was a Facebook group for transfers in the past, does anyone know if there is one this year?

@TheEarlyBird‌ When I go to the financial aid site and login, all of the helpful tabs up top (other than “Home”) disappear. It just tells me about reading the disclosure before seeing my options. Suggestions for how I can get passed this?

@scottjb621‌ I dont think you can get past that for a few more days. I heard there is a weel or two between the decision and the fin aid award.

anyone have any stats about waitlist likelihood?

Accepted! I made this account so I could post my stats for future transfers just to show that you don’t have to be an out of this world student to go to an ivy without a legacy. My stats are pretty average:

Current major: Literary Studies/ Business
Intended major: English and Comparative Literature and Business with a Concentration in Classics
Race: half white, half black
Sex: female
Private high school GPA: 3.6-3.7, no AP’s or honors
Public state college GPA: 3.69 (All A’s except for a D in a one credit class because of a bad professor and for which I provided a grade explanation)
SAT: 2000
College EC’s: newspaper columnist, on campus job and off campus job, multiple volunteering experiences (I loooooove volunteering so I highlighted it in my application), poetry and prose competitions with three awards in the last year, and two leadership positions in a volunteer organization.

I showed them I really wanted to go. I visited the campus, wrote the admissions officers often, and really showed my Columbia spirit in the essay. Not to mention what I’m sure were glowing rec’s (my professors really liked me). I think what put me over the edge was my essay. Really it can make or break you. I was nervous because my essay was kind of experimental, but it turned out to be a huge winner as it was probably a lot more interesting to read. I really showed them who I was! Also, I’m really passionate about the things I’m good at and make sure I integrate them into my ECs. For example, I love my English and Linguistics classes, so I teach reading and phonetics to kids in my spare time.

So biggest piece of advice: Grades are extremely important, but they’re not everything. They really are looking for well rounded individuals. So think about how you can add to Columbia and then tell them!

Columbia was my #1 so I’m definitely attending next semester.

I’m not sure about other people, but I was actually able to view my financial aid award yesterday. I logged in right after I read my decision online.

anyone get accepted from the los angeles area? PM me, I’d like to know if anyone from my area is going.

Does any of you know if our GPA is transferred to Columbia or only the credits?

@injustice Only the credits. Your Columbia GPA will consist only of Columbia classes. But if you apply to grad school, then they’ll recalculate using their own system and all grades earned in any college course you’ve taken will be counted and factored in.

@TheEarlyBird‌ Thanks for the info, then I guess I need to keep this struggle with GPA. Are you accepted to Columbia and decided to attend as well? I wish there was a facebook group for Columbia transfer this year

@injustice Yes I was also accepted, but I haven’t made a decision yet. Still waiting on one more decision to come out tomorrow and then I’ll have to compare everything. I’ll have lots of time to think after this week when I finish with midterms. How about you? Have you for sure decided to attend in the fall?

I’m pretty much committed to Columbia at this point. I’m majoring Econ and waitlisted by Chicago. It will be hard to decide between Columbia and Chicago if accepted. But considering I’m an Asian international applicant who seeks to major in Econ, I think it will be Columbia. Those two used to be my dream schools and I’m very stoked about Columbia, too! I’ve visited the campus and fell in love with Manhattan

Anyone who is for sure attending Columbia in the fall should make a Facebook group!

Hey guys, I’ve been following this thread for a while.
I’m a rising sophomore at Rutgers University hoping to apply as a transfer this year for junior year standing.

I’m going to be applying to SEAS. I was hoping if there are any advice you guys can give me? I can provide my stats on here or PM if you guys reply :)

Anyways, congrats on all of your acceptances people! You guys worked hard
