Current Freshman applying as a rising Sophomore.

I am thinking of applying. I am a freshman at Bucknell University. I am on the baseball team there and first semester I had a 3.7. How hard is it to transfer into Dartmouth? Do you think I have a chance?

Glad to see someone else on this thread! The fact that you’re an athlete puts you in a good position already. From what I understand, recruited athletes take up a fair portion of admitted transfer students each year, so see if you can fill out a recruitment form with the Athletic Office at Dartmouth. A 3.7 is not a bad GPA at all, but see if you can score all A’s this semester. A glowing Mid-Term report from your professors will definitely help your application in case second-semester grades cannot be sent in time for consideration.

Transferring into Dartmouth, or any elite school, will be an uphill battle. Last year, 57 students were admitted out of 683 who applied, for an acceptance rate of 8.3%. In years prior, the admissions rate was consistently around 3.5%. You can check out the official statistics on the Dartmouth Admissions website. It’s hard to tell if you individually have a great shot or not, as there have been applicants with impressive stats that have been rejected simply due to a lack of space. Dartmouth has a high freshman retention rate, leaving little room for transfer students. If you want to post your stats or PM them to me, I can give you my thoughts. Best of luck! What is your intended major?

I’m applying as well, even though the statistics for transfers look very depressing. Doesn’t hurt to try!

Yeah and roll with the rest of us

Mostly kidding. Best advice I can give is to express all your best qualities as a candidate in the most professional light. Talk about past experiences and how they have affected you today, what you intend to bring to the Dartmouth community, and why you’re a good fit for the school. Apart from presenting outstanding academic and extracurricular credentials, of course :D

I’m a brick in this wall. @KingofSweden, I seem to see your name all over these transfer threads ;)

@Tantara likewise!

I followed a lot of threads from previous years, and decided to really make the most out of my transfer experience and get to know the hearts and minds of those who share my dreams. Let’s hope we are all successful. :)

It’s nice to see some other people lookin at the good ol’ Big Green. I’ve been kinda apprehensive to post on CC, because, along with popular opinion, it really does seem like some online graffiti wall for people to boast about their grandiose accomplishments and undermine the confidence of everyone else. I actually think a lot of it comes from our own insecurities with our applications, and that because we’re so nervous and determined to feel like a competitive applicant we find solace in vilifying others for their flaws. Ya know?

Anyway, would anyone be interested to talk about the uniqueness of an application/more specific particulars, and what weight that bears in the decision-making process, especially in regards to offsetting other aspects of our app that are below average? I truly love Dartmouth and transferring in has been a huge dream of mine for awhile now–and probably like the rest of you, it’s hard to get THAT excited with such staggeringly low success rates of 3.5-8%.

So if anyone would be into talking about stuff like: more detailed extracurriculars, intended majors, rec letters and their importance, High School GPA vs College GPA, and most importantly… why you chose Dartmouth, lemme know! I’d love to pick y’alls brains and I’m sure it would be cathartic for all of us.

Wishing everyone the best in their transfer-related endeavors!!!

Hey SemperModestia!

I have to agree with your initial comments regarding the nature of CC. It’s best to encourage others who have the same ambitions as yourself instead of creating a hostile, competitive atmosphere.

That being said, it is still helpful to get honest feedback regarding your credentials, and I believe such a discussion is beneficial; not only to us, but to future applicants as well. I emailed an admissions representative at Dartmouth regarding the most valuable aspect of the transfer application, and received the following response:

“For transfer applicants, the Committee pays particular attention to the applicant’s ability to successfully “hit the ground running” once enrolled at Dartmouth.”

I don’t know how much that statement leaves up to interpretation, but I believe the admissions committee looks at your application holistically, and then tries to determine if you will succeed at Dartmouth despite never having had the freshman experience. Successful transfer students plug right into academics and social life regardless of if they have many or no friends there to start out with.

This is where I believe credentials come into play. Unique extracurriculars show passion and self-motivation, and set you apart from other applicants. I believe letters of recommendation also play a significant role. Has this student made the most out of their current school? Have they participated in class discussion, and to what extent? How have they contributed to their school, and similarly, how will they contribute to the Dartmouth community?

In the Class of 2016 admissions video, Maria Laskaris asks “What everyone at Dartmouth wants to know, is what will you do here?”

I believe that hits it right on the head. Dartmouth wants to be certain that you will contribute to their community with a unique background, experiences, passions, or talents. Make sure you let those shine in your application.

Applying to Dartmouth as well!

So what’s everyone’s opinion on the 14% drop in RD applications? Also, consider that last year’s transfer acceptance rate was more than double the years prior. Do y’all think that the numbers may not look so grim for those of us applying this Spring?

I feel like there very well could be a drop in the number of transfer applications (a) based on the trend from last year, (b) for the same reasons there was a drop in the RD pool, and (c) as a reaction to the publicized drop in the RD pool (and the subsequent poor publicity). Curious…

I definitely noticed the increase in the acceptance rate last year: 3.8% to 8.3%. I’m hoping for at least a double digit acceptance rate, but with admissions, it’s difficult to say anything with complete certainty. :/

Hey all, I applied to Dartmouth as an international transfer applicant from the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica. Wish you all the best and good luck.

Hey there folks! I’m applying to Dartmouth from the honors program at Boston College. Wishing everyone the best of luck!

@MYOMOO Yep.

Same here.

gettin rdy 4 that denial yeee

but in all seriousness, the source code reveals nothing interesting. i assume that it never will. i also received the e-mail, and the FA section of the application appeared today (or possibly yesterday ?) as well.

you guys will get in… I dont expect to get in… Even if I get in, I won’t enroll…

LOL @MYOMOO! Why wouldn’t you enroll if you got in? and if you don’t think you’ll get in, or want to go if you do, why go through all the trouble in applying? Those applications are pretty brutal.
