Comments: I am so nervous but so excited at the same time. I must have reread my essays like a billion times. Yes, they are already done, but I will be tweaking them for the next two months. I just hope I get in. I am so ready for this.

@000AAAaaa
Thanks! I’m applying to Penn, Dartmouth, Northwestern, Brown and Cornell. These are already reach schools but I’m also considering Yale for one super-reach. These are all tough and selective schools, so every applicants would be nervous! (except for some outstanding ones)

For me, I think the numbers won’t play the most important role in admission, but rather my essays that elaborate my ambition and interests with ECs.

@injustice I am applying to Dartmouth too, but since my GPA is literally the bare minimum for a Dartmouth transfer and since my ACT score is not the highest, there’s a huge pressure for me to shine in my essays. For me, the reason why I want to transfer out of my school is because I don’t like it, it’s not for me, and the community dynamic is not what I am looking for in an educational experience. With that said, I will literally have to put this in the most academic and elaborate way that I can in my essay haha.

Also, to transfer into Cornell, do you need to have SAT subject tests scores? The Transfer 2013 FAQs say “If you have previously taken the SAT or ACT, you should request that those scores be sent to Cornell directly from the testing service. If you have not taken the SAT or ACT, you do not need to take them to be considered for admission.” I will be sending in my ACT scores, but would I have to take SAT 2s since I didn’t do them in high school?

I think 3.76 GPA is still very qualified! I think 3.7+ is enough for showing your academic qualification in the university. Of course, very selective schools such as top 5 may require higher, but it should have no problem for Cornell.

I agree! it seems like after hitting a 3.7 what really determines your acceptance is essays and EC’s. From speaking to a HumanEc advisor I also learned required/rec classes are another factor.

How are everyones essays going? Does anyone know what in particular they are looking for- creativity, EC’s,flow, reason to transfer ect…? I am having a hard time deciding what to place more of an emphasis on, the story or editing.

@000AAAaaa My essays are pretty much done, and I will just be tweaking them for the next couple of weeks. I think a good thing for all of us to do is to really customize the supplement essay and show a lot of demonstrated interest. As for the main common app essay, I think what will be weighed most is how well we convey our reason for transfer. In general I think transfer essays will be more logical than creative, because you are describing your experience and why you need a change. But I think creativity in the manner that you structure your essay and some anecdotes here and there are still essential.

Also, has anyone taken classes that you think will transfer over to fulfill the first year writing seminar requirements? I didn’t take a single writing class last semester, but this coming semester, I am thinking of perhaps taking a writing class. Of course, it is never a for sure thing that the class will transfer as well. None of the open writing classes at my school really stay true to all these guidelines: [Knight Institute for Writing in the Disciplines](http://www.arts.cornell.edu/knight_institute/fws/fwsguidelines.htm)

Should I take a writing class anyway?

Also, is anyone planning to visit the campus in the next few months?

Applying: English(literary theory)
Current School: University of Nebraska at Lincoln (Honors Program)
Current GPA: 4.0
Credits: 12 in first semester, 17 in second semester(applying as a sophomore transfer)
High School GPA: 3.42
SAT score: 2020
EC: Staff writer at college newspaper, independent research project with a professor on decolonization, hired research position as an editorial assistant at a literary research archive, various literary clubs
Comments: Due to some problems in high school, I didn’t receive a very good GPA or SAT; but, with a letter from my high school counselor, I think I can convince Cornell it is buried in my past. I am writing my essay on the authors of the great plains as well as my experiences upon living in Nebraska, which I hope will provide a unique academic angle. Also, I think my letters of recommendations will be great.

Could anyone chance me? Also, does anyone know the best way to address my sub-par grades in high school(aside from a letter from my counselor)?

@flatstoc I think you have a chance! Your GPA now is a big jump from your high school GPA, and I think that shows that you have more motivation to excel.

@rdlp123 Thanks man, I appreciate it. Your application looks very strong, and it was a great call to finish your essays early; I’m still in the early process of drafting mine. Let me know if you need any proof reading, I would be happy to help.

@flatstoc No problem! Your EC’s look awesome and I think it’s evident that you’re pretty well-rounded. I hope we start to get more people on this thread soon.

Also, how are you guys going to handle the high school transcripts, well rising sophomore applicants at least. Cornell doesn’t start their application filing period until Feb 1. The only time I can get my official transcript to the school with the Final Report from my high school is during winter break which is now. Does the transcript need to be sent directly from our old high schools to Cornell, or can you just obtain your transcript and send it to Cornell yourself?

@rdlp123
Thank you so much for all the advice! that was helpful :)

I called in asking about the writing class and they recommended that I took it- but that might be specific to my major. I would advise calling and asking or looking at online requirements.

I really want to go visit! I am all the way in SF, but think it might help if I do. I will prob. look into tickets for the next long weekend? what about everyone else?

I was actually going to send them in asap? I believe that you can send them in earlier isn’t that the date that they will start reviewing full applications? I could be incorrect

And I believe that as long as your transcript is sealed it is all-right. I have had transcripts mailed to my house and then fwd. to schools- never encountered any issues.

@000AAAaaa I called Cornell today and they said that the transcripts would need to be sent directly by officials from my old high school. Also, an admissions official told me that for us applying for the fall of 2014, we should only begin sending application requirements starting February 1st because that’s when they start filing applications. My registrar told me she would ask the post office to hold the transcript until the end of January (and this was a brilliant idea).

I really want to visit Cornell too, but apparently getting into Ithaca is a little tricky. I am looking to go this MLK weekend.

Freshman applicant right here, deferred from Spring 2014 admission (not eligible for mid-year transfer)

Applying: CAS, Government
Current School: Liberty University (Yes, I know)
Current GPA: 4.00
Credits: 43 by the end of the year, some are AP
High School GPA: 4.1 (W) 3.96 (UW)
SAT score: Didn’t take
ACT score: 35
EC: Quite a lot, diverse interests: clubs, political activism, music, volunteer, volleyball, internships, honors
Comments: I feel pretty good. Essays were long and somewhat rambly, but I was specific about my interests in Cornell and why it was a great fit for me. Overall application is strong, UM, first-generation college student, glowing recs. Applying to a few other schools, as well.

Does anyone know how enforced CALS required course work actually is? I’m applying as a biometry and statistics major and I have not been able to complete the biology requirement since I go to an engineering school with a strict curriculum.
