hey all I was wondering if you think I have a chance at transferring into SFS given these facts.

Transferring from: Elliott School of International Affairs at The George Washington University
Credits (inc. current semester): 35
GPA: (fall only, shouldn’t change significantly): 3.69
U.S. Army ROTC 4-Year Scholarship Awardee. One of the best first-year cadets in the battalion demonstrated by multiple awards I’ve received (which I noted on the application).
proud member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Knights of Columbus.

Other stats:
SAT: 1470/1600 and 2180/2400
Received the full International Baccalaureate Diploma (although my scores on a few of the exams were kind of low)
HS GPA: 4.06 weighted, unknown unweighted. Top 10% of class though.

Most people (including my interviewer) tell me that I have a fairly good shot, but I’m afraid that my past rejection when I applied last year as a rising freshman will hurt my chances a little bit. Does anyone know how much a past rejection matters in the transfer admissions decisions?

Thanks,
Irish

PS Another interesting note about my situation is that I’m actually a member of Georgetown’s Army ROTC unit as they run the AROTC program for all the DC schools. Since it’s probably a little late to ask for formal recommendations would it help if I got the ROTC cadre to informally put in a good word for me with admissions?

Also, I know my GPA is slightly lower than the mean for SFS but considering I’m in a highly competitive and regarded IR program, does it really matter that much?

I mean I would think a past rejection would help you, if anything. because it shows that your interest in georgetown still persists. of course, there has to be improvement in your application for it to help you. if there isn’t much of a difference, then yes it could signal your rejection.

I think there is a significant improvement, as I’ve demonstrated that I can do university work at a high level. Also, I believe I wrote much better essays this time around and had much better rapport with my interviewer (to the extent that she told me I’m one of the better qualified applicants she’s interviewed, if that really means anything). So I’m really praying hard that the admissions committee sees it the same way I do.

anyone think we will find out this week??

I called the admissions office and asked if June 1 really meant June 1 and that if there was any chance they’d send out decisions sooner. He said no, we won’t find out until June 1.

Then again he could’ve been BSing so that I wouldn’t keep calling and asking about my status.

he lied. they say June 1st but according to past year threads decisions start coming around early May.

georgetown’s pretty obdurate about june 1st. they always say that. but i have a feeling some college accepted applicants will hear back this week

I’ve heard that they really do wait until close to June 1 for SFS candidates though

Not really.

@univercity: yeah, that’s what I thought too. Can’t wait! :D

I have a final in an hour and i am on CC. ■■■.

i found out right before june 1 last year, like maybe less than a week before, and i was accepted. i also submitted my application on the february deadline so that makes me believe that if you submitted late and are freaking on not receiving an acceptance dont panic because they probably didnt get to your app yet. i was all scared hearing people heard in april and early may (which people def did) but that i hadnt heard back yet. dont believe the people that say only denials come in the last two weeks bc thats def not true. keep the faith up til june 1 because acceptances certainly come up until then.

This is torture. Tell me how am I supposed to wait until June 1st.

well i guess that’s the reason why they are so insistent about june 1st. some people do find out close to june 1st so people would be calling in like crazy if they announced that they would send letters earlier. so it makes sense

question: (wow i feel like dwight lol), if i told georgetown that i got accepted into a selective program in my business school for next year, does that increase my chances, decrease my chances (weakening my argument of “better opportunities at georgetown”), or neither?

^If it is a very top school that Georgetown thinks the students will most definitely prefer, they might not admit you, guessing that you will not go there anyway. For example, if you got into Yale or Princeton, Georgetown will realize that based on those schools’ retention rate, it is more likely that you will go there. This is just my opinion and I do not think it is necessarily true for everyone. It is hard to know exactly but it definitely somehow figures into the whole process. When I was waitlisted at one of the Universities, as part of the waitlist acceptance application they asked at what others schools I had been waitlisted/admitted - they would not ask this if it did not matter. In my case I was waitlisted at Columbia and Upenn so I guess they would not consider me as much as someone who was waitlisted/accepted at a relatively low-ranking school and was more likely to attend.

oh sorry futuretransfer, i didn’t make it clear. I didn’t get accepted into another school. my current school has some programs that competitive students can apply to and you get to work on case competitions and stuff. and I did state that I want to attend Georgetown because they have better opportunities, so I was wondering if that argument would be weakened by the fact that my school also provides good opportunities.

^well, that depends on how you explained it. Plus, good opportunities are not same as “better opportunities” at Georgetown. They cannot demand that you be content with what you have if the “good” opportunities are not good enough for you. If you were content with everything why would you transfer? People dont transfer for absolutely no reason.

BTW, has anyone heard anything from Georgetown? I am increasingly restless as the time goes by. I don’t think I can wait till June 1 without any news.

none yet! hopefully soon, though. lets cross our fingers for next week!

some people probably have heard back already but just don’t use cc. this website usually helps to even slightly alleviate the restlessness but this year there’s an unfortunate lack of activity.

^now you’re making me very nervous : -) I can’t believe we still have one month to go before finding out For Sure.
