[] Volunteer/Community service:
[] Summer Activities: Worked at my internship for pay during Summer 2013, ~40 hrs/wk
[] Essays: I was quite proud of my essays. My cousin, who does this kind of thing fairly often, offered to edit them for me and gave them back with no changes. This was probably one of the strongest parts of my application.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I never saw them. However, my teachers like me so I’m assuming they were good
[] Counselor Rec: I’m guessing it was fine.
[] Additional Rec:
[] Interview: It went well, even though I arrived a little bit late (oops!). The guy asked these very strange, liberal-artsy type questions but seemed very impressed by my answers and my activities.
[] Supplementary Material(if any):
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Competitive, nationally ranked public high school. ~600 people in my class
[] Ethnicity: Asian - Pakistani
[] Gender: Female
[] Income Bracket(specify if applied for FA): Applied for FA. Income bracket $100k or so. It’s hard to specify because my parents are divorced and my dad makes a significant amount more than my mom does.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Asian?
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths:: I’m very focused on my eventual goal (veterinary school) and I’ve shown it with my extracurricular activities throughout high school. Also, I have very high test scores and am a National Merit Finalist.
[] Weaknesses: Low GPA
[] Why you think you were accepted/
waitlisted/rejected: See “strengths” above
[] Where else were you accepted/
waitlisted/rejected: So far, the only other place I’ve been accepted at is Northeastern. Waitlisted at Bowdoin and WashU, rejected from Rice and Middlebury. Still waiting on Williams, McGill, Yale, Dartmouth, Brown, and Cornell.
[/ul]General Comments: I was accepted out of the RD pool back in February as part of Grinnell’s new early admission program. I also received $21k in merit aid, and visited campus in early March.
As you can see above, my other college decisions haven’t turned out as well as I’d hoped they would. Ivy day is in less than a week, but I’m not holding out hope. I would tentatively say that I’ll be attending Grinnell come fall. :)

[] Summer Activities: Volunteer for 8 weeks in Mexico
[] Essays: Decent - Wrote about my summer in Mexico, and for the Grinnell supplement I wrote about how I’ve learned so much about other cultures through studying 4 languages in school and traveling to Germany and Mexico, but I want to learn more about my own heritage
[] Teacher Recommendation: Honestly have no idea.

General Comments: I’m ecstatic with Grinnell’s fin aid. It ended up being less than instate tuition for my flagship! I also received the Trustee Scholarship which helped with a lot of the costs. I honestly believe we end up where we are meant to be. Looking back, a lot of the schools I applied to weren’t fits based on what I want for the next 4 years. If everything works out, I’ll be a Grinnellian :)

i was accepted early acceptance and i listed all 12 other schools i applied to. i honestly think they just use that information for data collecting and it doesn’t have a bearing on acceptance.

My son did the same, zschattz, and was accepted early. His list was so consistent; 10 small quirky LACs.

It was an optional part of the application, so I left that question blank. Most of my schools didn’t even ask.

Taking math and physics at university
Great teacher recs
Common ap essay was incredible-really I was stunned when I read it.
Science award, lab experience and summer research. Not much community volunteering.

Visited, did not interview, wrote extra essay. We live in Iowa. Maybe they felt he should have shown more interest since we are in state. When we visited I did get a strong sense that they want community contributors. I think my son has a lot to offer in that way but for him it has not translated into activities that look impressive on an application.

Accepted early write Wesleyan University (where being from Iowa might be an advantage?). Sadly Grinnell had grown to be his top choice. He didn’t apply ed because he was still unsure at that time but now it is…or was. He is waiting on other decisions: Reed, Brown, Rice, Univ. Of Rochester.
Univ. Iowa accepted with full tuition and honors college.

Grats to those who were accepted! I know it is kind of isolated in Iowa, but the school seems to have so much to offer.

Good luck to all waiting!
