Official Harvard 2011 SCEA Thread

White male (a URM on this board!) from a small town in Texas. Howdy!

yeh, I live in Sydney, Australia.
It's a cool place, though ppl think we all ride kangaroos to school + work!

^Wait... you don't ride kangaroos? :P

So have you guys finished your applications yet?

Now, that's a good questions. No, I'm like 70% done? laughs Who's turning it in by 10/15?

I'm turning it in by that deadline! I've written the Common App essay and a supplemental one...now I just need to edit edit edit, ace the SAT IIs and bug my teachers about those rec letters :-P

nah, we don't ride kangaroos (it'll probably kick you if you tried.)
I'm about 40% through my application and I'm working around the clock to get it in by 15 October. Hopefully, we'll all pull through!

I was born in Melbourne! Yeahhhhh Aussies!

God, I'm procrasting my Yale SCEA app so much I'm on the Harvard board! This is embarrassing!

annakim, I'm applying from overseas too.

Concerning LORs/transcripts and such, are you planning to have it postmarked by the 15th, or do you plan for it to actually be at Harvard Admissions by the 15th?

bump

Everyone must be busy working on their applications. =]

theoneo: melbourne yeh? that's sweet- aussies are set to rule the world!

mary.loves.you: I've sent everything off now (i've had the darnest experience with the postage and vowed I would always send things several weeks in advance.) But, I think it's cool to have it all postmarked for oct.15
After all, the due date is November 1.

How's everyone feeling about their apps?

Wow annakim, looks like you're on top of things. I should be sending out my recs/transcripts this week...

I'm feeling confident about my application-- but I am worried about my SAT IIs. I'm taking them next weekend, but I just had surgery, so I'll have to write with my left hand. Ugh!

good luck Mary!

I want to send out all my parts by the end of next week (10/15), but dunno if that'll happen. I know my recs won't be in until 11/1, so it doesn't really matter.

Wow, I wish all of you the best of luck. I know how much Harvard must mean to you because you are applying early; I was in the same position last year. If you get into Harvard, I will be in your class, as I am in the middle of my gap year right now in a relatively warm overseas location for now. The fact that you have the courage to apply to Harvard early is something that is to be lauded, and I really hope that your dreams can come true. Reading the chances threads on this forum, I haven't seen anyone that doesn't have a great shot at Harvard, and I hope you can translate your amazing achievements into passion, drive, and a willingness to explore the unknown with respect to education. Best of luck. Best, best of luck.

Oh hey. White female from south of Boston, I want to go into some sort of science, not quite sure yet. Um. I fly planes? I have a license and I worked in an aero/astro lab at MIT for two years.

thanks fishofsorts, that's very encouraging :) I hope you're enjoying your gap year...what exactly are you doing?

Thank you Earth-dragon and thefishofsorts!

I'm continually shocked by the number of people who think Harvard's SCEA was dropped starting this year. Soooo many people give me weird looks when I tell them I'm appling SCEA-- "Didn't you read the news? Harvard's not doing early action anymore..."

Does anyone else think the number of SCEA apps will be significantly reduced this year?

haha, personally looking at the like...life of this thread, I think there will be a minor decrease, but then again...CC is probably not the BEST indication. But I know everyone who was applying SCEA in my school is still doing so, so I doubt there'll be a LARGE decrease.

Mary.loves.you - it's not as bad as my sister thinking that Yale dropped SCEA, too, starting this year. "What are you going to do? Are you screwed?" Haha.

Good luck to any fellow SCEArs who are taking the SAT tomorrow!

I'm taking the Subject Tests. After looking over the info covered on the Physics test, I decided there was no way I could memorize the formulas/learn the concepts (I didn't take AP Physics). Sooo, after much deliberation and an email from Harvard Admissions saying it was acceptable, I've decided to take both Math tests and Literature. I'll be shooting for 2100ish overall... I know taking both Maths has been a subject of debate on these boards, so I guess I'll be the CC guinea pig and see if its possible to get in with Math IC and Math IIC.

Once again, best of luck to all!

Good luck to you too. Those subjects are a good choice - especially literature, just make sure you keep a clear mind on the day. They place some tricks in the literature but it's pretty straightforward overall.
