***Official Harvard Class of 2012 Waitlist Thread***

My kid received a personal note last week from his Harvard admissions regional/case officer (whom he's never met) thanking him for his letter updating the admissions office on his activities of the last few months and expressing his ongoing desire to attend Harvard. Is that standard? I.e. did everyone receive such a note?

I didn't receive such a letter, but the people who sent in extra recommendation letters on my behalf did. Their letters were similar to yours and were all personalized (i.e., they weren't form letters).

txswimmer9: Don't go. Harvard sucks. ;)

dear tx swimmer9, heartiest congratulations !! This is a very nice problem to have ! I was wondering if you had earlier written to Harvard and comitted to them or did they call your counselor because you had not done so ?

On a seperate note, did not recieve anything back from the folks at Harvard

Thanks... "good problem to have" pretty much sums it up.

After I was placed on the wait list, I wrote a letter to Harvard saying how much I wanted to go, that I would go if admitted, what I wanted to study, how I would contribute etc. I couldn't "commit" to them because I was just on the waiting list. I think they just called my counselor to make sure they weren't wasting their time admitting me if I was just going to reject them.

just called the admissions office and the earliest we'd start hearing about decisions apparently is by the end of the week. but it's a rolling process through june.

Just called as well; Gadli is correct. They are hoping to end the process before mid-June. However, most of CC is incorrect in assuming the accuracy of the 150-175 statistic. It is my understanding that they will be releasing their own statistics in an article in the Harvard Gazette and/or Crimson later this week.

While it looks like -- from posts above -- that some people have received some form of contact, the Admissions officer I talked to implied that they have yet to send out any decisions. Specifically, he said "we will send out the first wave" of contact around the end of this week.

txsmimmer9,

That's great about Harvard. I know if my son had gotten into Dartmouth he would have gone, so I know, it's a tough decision. I think he just really loved their campus.

Can you try something for me, I'm wondering if you put your name and password into the admitted students part of Harvard's website, does it now work for you?

congrats txswimmer9, that is a tough, tough decision.

After reading your post, I kind of regret putting "undecided" for my intended major.

I also got a personal note from my regional admissions officer thanking me for my update. I don't think it means anything...:(

CNI, at least you didn't put biology

I tried it and it still does not work. I don't think that means anything though. The decisions are not final, the call was just heavily hinting that I would be admitted. I just made the post to see if anyone had any decision advice.

Your son might have had the same experience, but it seems like the people at Dartmouth are, I don't know, "warmer," perhaps. They all seem like really genuine, nice people. I didn't see as much of that at Harvard. And I really appreciate the close-knit atmosphere at Dartmouth, as well as amazing opportunities to interact really closely with your profs. I'm leaning towards Dartmouth but it is incredibly difficult to escape the prestige game... I know I will get an amazing education at Harvard too and a Harvard diploma does carry huge weight... ugh, I just don't know. I get so many people who are just like "Harvard duh" but it's so much more complex than that...

I put biology D:

I'm somewhere between really hoping to get in and afraid to hope. Financial aid didn't come through, and I've only wanted to go to Harvard since I was like... 10... -__-

Nothing here either.

My son also received a letter thanking him for his letter. By the way, here's an excerpt from the times article:

"In an e-mail message sent on Thursday to colleagues at dozens of other institutions and passed on to The New York Times, William Fitzsimmons, the Harvard College dean of admissions, said, “Harvard will admit somewhere in the range of 150 to 175 from the waiting list, possibly more depending on late May 1 returns and other waiting list activity.”

AHarvard spokesman said the college had accepted fewer students this year to avoid overcrowding the freshman class.

My son put Biology too, maybe he should have gone with something more extreme. lol

thanks txswimmer9 for trying that!

I actually would just like Harvard to just let him know next week if he didn't get in, I'd rather it not drag out any longer, it just gets his hopes up.

txswimmer,

My son was debating between Harvard and Brown. We also thought that H was a little cold, but after attending the admit day and meeting other parents and students at Harvard, I can say that I was wrong! Harvard is great. We visited the campus and got to talking to many students and I must say that I never met such nice college people as I did at Harvard. They are so warm and friendly and nice and willing to help.

My son is really looking forward to Harvard and as a parent, I am so excited for him.

My son just checked and his info still comes up when he goes on the Harvard web site.

What is everyone checking on the harvard site?

The Application status

Oh, I thought that stayed up until enrollment was completed. Maybe not. Best of luck

Just wondering: are the letters thanking applicants for supplementary materials written by their regional representatives? I sent mine an email and called to ask if it's been received and didn't get an answer. If it's personally written by the regional reps then it's probably just a difference in reps thing as opposed to my letter getting lost in the mail.

Maybe it does. If you read earlier posts though, some said that they checked and the info wasn't there. Best of luck to you and your son too!
