Here's hoping that the waitlist is less than 1000.

Also, my mom called the admissions office and whoever she talked to said that they had a financial aid package for me, but that I shouldn't read anything into it. Do you guys think it really means nothing and they just do it for everyone on the waitlist?

maybe they said they have a financial aid package planned?

i got waitlisted as well

APLinke (plus at least 10 other kids from my school...probably more that I haven't personally talked to)

Where is everyone going in the meantime? I'm going to duke

georgetown for now

stanford for now

Me, too (son). How do you deal with the deadline to respond to an admit and yet be able to take advantage of getting in off a waitlist? Can you do both - say yes to an admit and then if Harvard says yes to you, tell the admit you changed your mind?

yes, you're supposed to put your deposit down and enroll at another institution by may 1, and if the waitlist offers you a spot then you can accept it. you'd just lose your deposit

Duke for now!! I'm really excited about it though.

Just curious, if you call Harvard admissions and ask them about the waiting list size, will they just refuse to tell you?

i think we can be pretty sure that the size of the waitlist is at least 1000, possibly as many as 1500

The waitlist is supposedly big this year (according to the sheer number of kids I know who are waitlisted and the assurance of my guidance counselor), but it is also probably going to be a decent year to be getting off because of the economy and students enrolling elsewhere for better fin aid. And I am going to Dartmouth!

^ I'd still expect the yield to be around 70-75%. There really aren't many schools with better financial aid programs than Harvard's.

I'm hoping for a yield of no more than 80%. At 80%, (if I'm doing my math correctly), they may take 100 students. At least it wouldn't feel totally futile.

Well whatever happens will be a surprise for all of us.

I plan on going to UCLA or Cal, both of which I am very fortunate to be accepted into =]. My eyes are already set for both schools and I am having difficulties choosing between them.

But if I get off the waitlist and into Harvard, it will be an extra super rush of ecstasy for me. :D

Does anyone know whether Harvard checks third quarter/second semester grades of those waitlisted?

They wouldn't be able to. Usually students would finish near June, and by that time, apparently most of the waitlist decisions will be made, and people will be notified if they got off the waitlist.
