***Official Harvard Class of 2012 Waitlist Thread***

Do you guys think that all 200 have been notified? Seems unlikely to me

No one is notified yet.

^ not true. Several have been notified, including a classmate of mine.

In the Crimson article referenced abopve (post #276), it talks about a "letter from the Admissions" office with "better news." Do you think that the "cream of the crop" are getting phone calls from Admissions and the rest will be done via this "letter?"

Did your classmate get a call to ask if he/she is still interested or actuall admission?

No. She just got a call saying she was in. She's already enrolled. Didn't do any of the supplemental stuff (i.e. no extra essays, phones calls, recs, w/e).

This is vicariously SO nerve-wracking. I am the father of a sophomore, but I know someone on the waitlist and am really hoping he gets an email, a phone call, or a traditional letter SOON with good news! Clearly, what Harvard does will impact the other Ivies' waitlists as well, don't you think?

Next time someone is offered a spot, they should ask if phone calls are the norm or are they a special case.

Does anyone know how many are actually on the waitlist?

I find it hard to believe that the ones being notified by phone now has anything to do with them being the "cream of the crop". If they are the cream, then why weren't they admitted in the first place? My guess is that their answer on acceptance may have an influence on who else they might offer admission, individual admission officers' personal notification preferences, or that the waitlisted individual is critical to filling a gaping hole in the class structure as it stands now. But this is only my guess and we've not seen any reliable rationale for why some have been called at this point while other evidence suggests that, for the most part, notification won't come til end of this week at the earliest.

True, but why are some getting phone calls early in the week when the rest of the accepted waitlistee's have to wait for notification at the end of the week?

Well, it could be that those who've already been notified are clear admittees due perhaps to having some special talent or interest in a concentration that would round out a class, where maybe previous admittees in that talent declined, or are students who were very close to being admitted in RD pool.

I see. Good point. I did read somewhere that they do try to fill a spot with a similar type of student who declined their offer. Others on CC didn't this was correct, but I do believe it to be true.

In answer to an earlier question: the admissions person who called to tell my son he was accepted said he "had the week to think about it."

any calls today?

are the admitted students able to log onto the admitted students portal yet?

We are on the west coast. Are some places more attractive than others to the Harvard selection committee? Also, is there any way to determine how many hopefuls are on the waitlist?

^ Unfortunately, no

just got in off the waitlist

admission officer called personally to extend admission a short while ago

good luck to everyone else!
