I am not sure if xjayz is a troll (he has too many posts). And I do not expect that he will name a person who leaked the info (simplest - a student helper overheared something).
I am inclined to believe that the 144 figure exists. You remember how RD is described? Three piles: admit/maybe/reject. So 144 happened to be in the "admit" pile. They could be selected from a smaller priority group chosen during RD. But even if they went through all apps - they managed to go through 27,000 apps in February-March, this is 25 times less. Why should it take more than a few days? Also, if Princeton and Yale managed to go over their waitlists in a few days, why couldn't Harvard?
Now it is only natural to start notifying those 144 right away, before sorting out through the "maybe" list.
So the only suspicious part is that all those 144 have been notified already. Maybe they were SELECTED by today, but will be notified tomorrow and Friday?

90 kids taken off of Penn's waitlist and ~10 are from CC.
144 kids taken off of Harvard's waitlist and only 4 are from CC.

Those proportions do not at all match up!

citymom- very good insight

@ citymom

your last sentence is very insightful for sure. and i'd be inclined to think that is true, but it isn't exactly consistent with the original rhetoric of xjay.

my apologies if anything i said seemed like "bashing." i am only trying to sort this out like everyone else.

@wellnow: same here. I thought they would possibly let those 144 know in the next two days, except xjayz said: "Everyone should have heard at this point if you were one of the 144."

If he's telling the truth, I hope he misheard, though he sounded very sure of himself. Either way we'll find out tomorrow.

I think the 144 number could be right, I'm hoping that they all haven't been contacted. Someone posted today that their GC was called to see if the waitlistee's at their school were still interested, why would an admissions officer bother to do that if everyone had been notified?

hm.... my question now is if they've already selected 144 students, why not just let everyone know on the same day?

Found the post, it was APlinke, their GC was just called this morning about the waitlistee's interest at his/her school.

is it common for the GC to be contacted by Harvard before the student is picked off the waitlist?

I remember reading last year's thread(Lame, I know), and someone who's GC was contacted was actually rejected. I know that my school's GC wasn't contacted prior to my friend being admitted, but that seems to be a special case.

I don't know if it's common, but it seems to be happening alot.

ok, I have to go watch Idol, I'm going to miss this thread once it's all over. lol

mmk, thanks CNI and emmabelle. b/c i dont think my GC gets contacted by those ivies... but how would I know :P

we should all have grand ol' reunion on CC next year

... or at harvard, to be optimistic ;)

"Harvard is very active... 2 kids got in from my school...but sometimes i seriously wonder how they pick these students... some of them are so underqualified..."

someone posted that in another thread just today

I believe the letter we received said "many Hundreds" but I could be wrong.

White Rabbit, what letter? did you get a letter?

I don't see what would be so damaging about Harvard just coming out of the closet and stating the size of its waiting list, like Yale did from the very beginning.

I think that person was referring to the original wait list notification note we got after April 1st.

lol!!!! Everyone~"Relax"
I'm sure you all got into wonderful colleges~So Harvard should be an option not a "must have or I'll die" commodity~Don't set your heart on getting in~Hope for the best and that's all you can do!!!

6 of my friends rejected to attend Harvard~2 Stanford, 1 Wharton, 1 Yale, and 2 Princeton :p
1 of my friends took Harvard

I'm on the waitlist to see if Harvard will be a slightly better fit for me. You should have that mind-set too that way you won't be sorely [Might I say angrily ;)] disappointed if you get rejected [Odds are still against us in reality].

Put you in perspective of the volatility of college admissions:
Me
Accepted:Yale Likely/Princeton/Wharton/Stanford/MIT/Columbia/Brown/NYU Stern
Waitlisted:Harvard
Rejected: Nowhere

Friend
Accepted:Harvard/NYU Stern
Waitlisted:Nowhere
Rejected: Yale/Princeton/Wharton/Stanford/MIT/Columbia/Brown

Most of ccers are deserving, but admissions is a crap-shoot in many ways than you can imagine :D!!! So cheer up!!!

Yeah I received no such letter. But then again I took my spot on the waitlist on like May 7th.

hey! just joined today.... all of this is so exhausting. i'm starting to think we should just stop speculating altogether because, as was previously mentioned, it's not doing us any good. i honestly don't know what to think about the 144 report. it could very well be true, and I can understand why Harvard would not want to be extremely open with the numbers, at least initially. they could be trying to get a feel, sort of like if hey make or have made 144 offers and only get lik 50% "yes" (unlikely), then they know they will have to work little harder and pull more people off the list. but i agree that 144 would not be conservative, since its well below the intended number. and it's totally possible that not all 144 have been contacted yet..

CCer8888: 6 of your friends?? what doom friends you have
