Official Harvard Fall 2014 Transfer Discussion Thread

I didn't see anyone start a discussion for this year's transfer cycle so I thought I'd start one. Anyone else applying?? I'm applying as a rising sophomore and I have some questions about the supplement. When it asks us to outline our academic plans at Harvard, do we strictly talk about classes and concentration we'll pursue? Or can we also talk about clubs, research, internships, other ECs, etc?

I am too. And it specifically states academic plans, but I’d seize the opportunity to mention anything extra at Harvard that relates to what you’re interested in studying.

Here we go. Top choice for me, very serious about applying. Rising sophomore.

@TheEarlyBird I agree with Tantara7. Write about the opportunities you are most looking forward to pursuing that relate to your concentration of interest.

Thanks! It’s so hard to put everything into a structured essay because there’s so much I want to talk about! Hopefully everything will just click once I’m done writing haha. It’s a top choice for me too, but I know it’s a very very long shot so I don’t want to get too attached because it’s more likely that I won’t get in.

I’m trying to adopt the same mindset, and I know it would be incredibly wise to do so, but Harvard simply has unparalleled opportunities in my concentration of interest and I know it is a perfect fit. Let’s hope the admissions committee feels the same way.

If we have a supplemental letter of recommendation from a research mentor, can we include that under the “academic evaluators” on the common app? I don’t see any other place I can assign the extra recommendation.

Because the Common App doesn’t include a spot for mentors, employers, etc., you should probably submit it as an addition to your application. Go to http://college.harvard.edu/contact-us</a>, select “Your Submitted Application,” and then select “Additions to Application.”

Anyone else get the HU e-mail about actually requiring teacher recs? Here I was, thinking that Harvard was somehow enlightened and trying to figure out why. But nope, just a mistake

Yes I also got that email

I got that email as well.

In terms of sending the school an update after submitting the application, what would be the types of things that would be noteworthy enough to include? I am in a research laboratory at my current institution and there is a chance that I could get something published. Also, when would be the last day that we could send any updates in?

I mean they turn these around relatively quickly (while this is due in March 1st, we hear back in earlyish May), so I wouldn’t leave it more than a few weeks to send out an update. And I’d think that being published would be noteworthy enough to mention, but I personally wouldn’t do it if they already know about the research and know that it’s important/relevant

Is anyone that’s applying currently at a school on the quarter system? Since winter quarter grades are officially reported in the third or fourth week of March, would Harvard be expecting an updated transcript to be sent?

I think it would be best to submit an updated transcript then. I feel like April 1st is a good date to submit a Mid-Term report/updated transcript (if you’re on the quarter system) because you’ve spent enough time in your classes to earn a grade and also leave an impression on your instructor. Because it’s halfway through the review period for Harvard, it gives them a good indication of where you stand as they’re reviewing your application. I’m sure if your pulling all-As with a month left to go to in the semester, you’re consistent enough as a student that they can expect a solid completion of the semester.

Just my $0.02.

That’s what I was thinking. And plus, they’ll be able to see which classes I’m taking for spring quarter as well. This final push to finalize my app throughout the coming week will definitely be tough, seeing as how multiple midterms, papers, and labs are due. But hey, you gotta do what you gotta do! And Harvard is only motivating me even more.

Just sent in my application. I’m applying from a community college, so it should be interesting to see how they treat that.

Congrats @CelloDiego! Best of luck. Are you applying from out of state?

Yep, California.

OK. I always wondered if Mass. community college students were of special interest to Harvard. Anyone familiar with this?

Harvard takes very few transfers from community college, and doesn’t give any special advantage to Massachusetts CC students.
