OFFICIAL Harvard HOOK site!!!

Hey everyone, both prospective and those aready accepted! What are all the HOOKS you are going to use in your application whether it be EXTREME amounts of community service(if that works) or being the son/daughter of a governor!!!!!!

List and explain your HOOK (things that will help you get admitted through uniqueness or the like)

Now that that's started...my wonderfully sucky hook is over 400 hours of community service in tutoring children in reading.

Could you use scholarships that are sort of awards like "Outstanding Students of America" and list that as an award and possibly a hook????

Will it impress at all??

I think you're confused about what an actual "hook" is...

I have a real hook. I'm from South Dakota and I'm from a low income family... Things like location and income are hooks, not lots of community service, although it does help.

Does an annual total family income of $2500 qualify for a hook? Believe it or not, this kind of number differs from country to country, you know, and $2500 is quite the norm in Vietnam.

I'm sure it is. Incorporate it into your essay... how you experienced difficulty with ECs due to lack of money and stuff...

I wanna give you a nice waffle for your reply, Crimson4me:) Sure, lack of money cause a lot of things. No classy English classes, no shopping spree, etc. You got any hook yourself?

lol. I like waffles. :)
Yeah, im an international student who moved every 4 years (to countries on dif continents) since the age of 6. So I'll play the diversity card.....

Gee, that's a real hook buddy. I know two fellow highschoolers, one in Harvard, another in Yale and some other Ivies. The Harvard one got like 1300 for SAT I, the Yale one 1580 (eek!). The point is, Harvard girl spent like 7 years in Germany and boasted about how she caught up w/ VNmese kids in her essay (will post for you guys when essay time comes) while Yale girl got secondary edu. in the US. So diversity really counts pal. Congrats and give me another waffle hehe:)

Lol. I hope it helps. My SAT I is only 1400 (old one) and I'm not retaking, so I sort of need to compensate for my low scores.
It would really help if you could post her essay... but there's still time.
What are you writing your essay about, miaoling?

crimson... are your parents diplomats/ ambassadors? I know they have to travel every four years, so thats why I'm asking.

Yeah, my mom's a diplomat. But only the last trip (well, actually, the current one) has been diplomacy-related. The other ones weren't.

Right buddy, I think I'll start an essay thread for people to post their accepted and rejected essays. It really helps. But wait till Aug, maybe. It's way too early right now;) I haven't decided on the topic; they haven't sent me the package so I don't know what'll be the exact questions this year. Maybe st about "My Room" or "How I Spent the Last Two Summers Making Money";) Yours? Btw, I haven't noticed any corner for essays around here. Maybe not everyone needs it?
I also know a VNmese girl name Khanh somewhere in CA who attended a public school there and now studies Medicine in Harvard. She wrote an essay about how she first rejected her VNmese name and then how it dawned on her that names hold more meaning than just a sound, bla bla. I've got that essay too. You see, you can really put your diversity to good use.

great idea about the thread. i think the essay is probably the most important component next to your grades and that people dont devote enough time to it.
Mine is going to be about moving and integrating into dif societies...etc and the other one is going to be about my passions and hobbies

Uh huh, essays are what polish your personality the best. Harvard likes that. I used to think 1600s (or 2400s now) on the SAT I is a big hook, but they turn out more a curse than a blessing. Especially in a situation when you got 1590 first try and retook to get a 1600. My condolences to someone here who did so...
Only problem is, everytime I read accepted essays I feel like all the creative and attractive topics are used up. There was this girl (must be an Asian) who explained why she always signed her name as "Myung!" w/ an exclamation point and not a period or st else, you see, people got a lot of bizarre ideas.

WHOA! So maybe I AM confused on hooks.

Is being a minority (Hispanic, Puerto Rican) a hook?

How can you right a diversity essay on that?

Is a hook being a MINORITY AND being an applicant from the SOUTH??

I have several hooks, a main one and another to diversify from the asian norm.

Main: Medicine/Science

RSI this summer (maybe, i got accepted)
Westinghouse Regional Semi
City of Hope Internship (8 hrs/day during summer)
Tons of other classes/ECs

Other:

Asian Eagle Scout w/ palms
Asian Water Polo Player (several awards/captain)
Asian interested in minoring in Eng/Economics
Very well-rounded?

When you say diversity card essay do you mean internationally? I am an URM so what could I write about. Now I moved from NYC to tampa Florida and the experience was TOTALLY (seriously) different!!!!! Is there something I can relate this to school and diversity of idea and diversity? Any IDEAS????

Medicine and science majors are HOOKS in Harvard??? That would be my plans as well.
