my friend got in with a 85% avg, a 2000 SAT, 3s on 4 APs, and crappy recs and few ec's. Hook? Mentally disabled father, family on welfare since 9/11. What I just found out about him? Has a congenital endocrine disorder.

I'm feeling really down, i read until page 5, couldn't read anymore, and have found that almost of all 10 people I looked at, the only ones who got ACCEPTED were ppl with SATs at 2300 or higher, SAT IIs at 760 or higher, and ACTs at 34 higher. Maybe these people are "unique" with passions that the harvard admins really thought would help the school, but i thought that harvard wasn't necessarily part of that numbers game ? Also, are there any people who actually GOT IN who have test scores that aren't so great ? After looking at the stats of admitted people, I'm thinking that I have severely limited chances with my bot-so-spectacular grades.

^that's exactly what people keep forgetting.

Harvard and other comparable schools are, first and foremost, looking for * the best and the brightest!* It's very nice and comfortable to believe that down-right brain power isn't everything in the admissions game. This happens to be true, BUT ONLY to an extent. Academics make up 70% of the decision.

That's why most accepted applicants have a 2250+ SAT; and that's why the Ivies and other top schools remain the leaders of the academci world - by maintaining their high standards of intelligence.

What people keep forgetting is that the SAT has almost nothing to do with 'high standards of intelligence.'

QUOTE: "If you take the SAT and its competitor, the ACT--which about 80 percent as many kids take--the vast majority of college bound kids take those tests. And yes, the SAT in particular has its roots in IQ testing. Which are at best controversial and, at worst, quite, quite poor predictors of anything of value."
