[li] Other thoughts: Good luck to everyone next year, hope these decision threads can help you people out![/li][/ul]

Decision: Rejected

Stats:

* SAT: 2370 composite 800M, 800CR, 770WR
* SAT IIs: MathIIC: 800 Biology M: 800 USH: 790 Spanish: 740 Chem: 660

* Rank: top 5%
* Other stats: 5s on 5 AP exams, graduating in 3 years, did well in several math competitions (school winner two years in a row on AMC12)

Subjective:

* Essays: Very good essay quality, but not Harvard-specific
* Teacher Recs: Good
* Counselor Rec: Awesome
* Hook (if any): Obviously none, since I didn't get in ;-)

Location/Person:

* State or Country: NY
* School Type: Large public, 360 students in class of '06
* Ethnicity: White
* Gender: Female

Other Factors:

* Extracurriculars: crew team (5 years), math team, speech/debate secretary, in Natl. Honor Society, 1 season of indoor track
* Summer stuff: CTY, two weeks of "research" at RPI (it was really just programming, not actual research, but whatever), MIT's Women's Technology Program
* Why I think I was accepted/deferred: My heart just wasn't in it.
* Other thoughts: I've desperately wanted to go to MIT for the past five years, and I got in early, so in a sick way I'm sort of glad that I didn't get into Harvard. This way I can go off to MIT knowing that I made the right choice (since I don't have a choice at all! I was waitlisted by Yale, my only other school.) and not wonder for the rest of my life whether I did the wrong thing by turning down the Big H, or worse, giving up my dreams just for a name.

of apps from your school: 3 other people

Subjective:
Essays: Both were good, didn't think much of them. One was about when I got captivated by economics and the other is about how folkloric dancing has brought me closer to my culture.
Teacher Recs: only one teacher let me read theirs, it was ok. I'm guessing the other one and the other two additional recs were astounding
Counselor Rec: didnt read it
Hook (if any): um...international???
Important ECs: Rugby, Tennis, Soccer, Folkloric Ballet
Location/Person:
State or Country: Santiago, Chile
School Type: private
Ethnicity: Hispanic
Gender: male
Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: I guess my strength was my GPA (3.98 uw) and my interview. Weaknesses, I got many....the acceptance really suprised me
Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: My interviewer told my parents I had a 90% chance of going in: I don't know what he saw in me, but I guess the admission staff saw it as well.
Is Harvard your #1 choice?: Yeah
Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: I hope I get enough financial aid... it would really suck to get accepted and not receive enough financial aid.

Decision: Accepted!

[] Important ECs: Founding Vice-President of Interact Club, Project Director of Key Club, Academic Decathlon, Commissioner of Technology in ASB, Varsity Tennis
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Southern California
[] School Type: Large public
[] Ethnicity: White/Hispanic
[] Gender: Male
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: Intellectual thirst, character (funny and compassionate), location / Relatively poor essay scores on both the SAT and ACT, didn't really do anything unique or amazing
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: It's a combination of many factors.
[li] Is Harvard your #1 choice?: I don't have a first choice...I am really confused right now about where to go, and I can't believe I only have a month to decide (and I've only received 2 financial aid reports out of 12 colleges)![/li][/ul]Other Factors: Strong senior courseload that consisted of 5 AP's plus ASB. Also, a 5 on the Biology AP test and 4's on Literature and U.S. History.

Decision: WAITLISTED

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT I: 800 V, 780 M, 800 W (collective)
[] SAT IIs: 800 Lit, 770 Bio E, 650 French Reading
[] ACT: N/A
[] GPA: 4.52 (junior year), 4.0 UW
[] Rank: 2/363
[] Other stats: National Merit Finalist, all 5s on 6 AP exams
[] Deferred?: N/A
[] # of apps from your school: 2, me and another girl...

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: loved 'em
[] Teacher Recs: didn't see, but they love me and write amazingly well
[] Counselor Rec: good
[] Hook (if any): Nope, guess not
[li] Important ECs: museum volunteer, MHS, French HS, NHS, Relay for Life, student gov't
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: VA, USA
[] School Type: public
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[] Perceived Strengths/Weaknesses: English/driving. I can't ^_^ No, honestly, Math (Dare I say the deposed President might be right? Well, at least about me.)
[] Why you think you were accepted/rejected/waitlisted: 1) 23,000 applicants. 2) Few awards. 3) Interviewer knew I had applied to Princeton b/c her husband interviewed me for Princeton, and she may have said so...which would of course kill the "I'm only interested in Harvard" thing... 4) They didn't have a space for a Caucasian female who liked English from VA?
[li] Is/Was Harvard your #1 choice?: Actually, no...of the 3 biggies, it was last. I liked the feel of Yale and Princeton better.[/li][/ul]Other Factors: No clue; I thought the interview w/Harvard was my best actually. Oh well, guess it was just the number of admissions and luck.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: You know, I worried I'd be devastated, but I wasn't...'specially since I got the e-mail after finding out I got into Yale. In my estimation, the big 3 are equal, so I just shrugged and said, "OK, that's one I don't have to make a decision on..."...Interestingly, that e-mail got put in my junk mail folder. Talk about funny! I don't know if I'll accept the waitlisting; if I do it would only be to get that certificate and see if I could get in, so I probably shouldn't as the waitlist is so big anyway. So it comes down to Yale vs. Princeton for me. Ah, I'm weeping. :)
