Bmonticello, just work on getting in now. I highly doubt that your parents will continue to be strict about your money use if you get accepted to Harvard or Princeton.

No, trust me they will. They wont even pay for my application let alone even johns hopkins, becuase the likelyhood of getting merit is too slim. I think the only way the mere thought of even considering paying would be if I got into Harvard.

I didn’t even know this thread existed! Yayyyy (Go Harvard…and other clich

Bringing it back to test scores…

I took the SATs in May and got a 2080 >.< I’m retaking them in October and hoping for 2200+. I also took an ACT diagnostic test and scored a 34 (35 if you factor in the scales in the book I used, which I wasn’t sure whether or not to…) So I figure if I start studying for the ACTs for when I take them in September, I can hopefully score at least a 35.

I just wish my parents would understand that ACTs and SATs are equally regarded by all the schools I am applying to…

^I assume they think the SAT is more highly regarded…?

I mean, you can show them the data: the huge percentage of people who took the ACT last year, the fact that the ACT is more common than the SAT now in the South and Midwest, etc.

Going to follow this thread. I’m between ED Penn, SCEA Yale or Harvard. I’m probably not going to be able to visit Harvard. Meh. I don’t know. I’m leaning towards RD. I have super low expectations RN. My parents are more about “you did all this work”, so you had better apply.

I don’t know, like I always thought of myself as a solid applicant, even after following College Confidential for about two years, but know that the application process is just right around the corner everything just seems more difficult. For many of us this application is a step towards achieving our goals in life, things greater than ourselves, or our opportunity of doing something to be remembered. I can’t help having doubts about myself despite having confidence in myself in the past. I mean I was sure I was going to do all these wonderful things during the summer, and now I can’t even write a single sentence about my college essay. Maybe some of you feel the way I do, maybe not. I just think that right now I am doubting what I thought in the past I was very sure of, and it is difficult getting out of this mental block. Maybe once school starts next Monday I will feel back on track.

Yes, I too question whether I should actually apply early to Harvard or not, because I wouldn’t consider myself a very competitive applicant. I figure I should anyway because I the other options are MIT/Northeastern EA or one of the ED schools, and I’m fairly confident I will get into northeastern RD, plus MIT is just as much of a crapshoot and I really don’t want to commit ED unless I’m sure.

@ Thebeatlestoday, SAT is NOT regarded higher. Harvard already clarified that, and it would be pretentious to think what they say is just a lie. If you are a fast reader and more math person, ACT will be easier, but if you are the other way, you may find SAT easier. Havard admission officer (and as well as Yale and Stanford) said in the interview that SAT > ACT is a pure myth, and they really don’t care. You can just google them. Don’t remember where I watched it.

And good luck with SCEA y’all! I’m thinking about applying as well. This makes me very nervous, man… Just like Jose, I’ve thought I’m a strong applicant, but now I’m very unsure about it. But I’m gonna apply anyways.

I was replying to a previous poster whose parents didn’t want him to take the SAT. By “they” I meant his parents, not colleges. I’m fully aware that the SAT and ACT are equally acceptable to colleges.

one question guys. i have 5 APs currently (calc ab, bio, gov, lit, studio art) and I could possibly move my schedule around to take AP psych to make 6 APs, but i really don’t want to make my senior schedule too strenuous. what do you think, should i take it? i’ve already missed a week but could catch up

Psych really isn’t that rigorous; I think it would just be extra work for you, and wouldn’t prove anything to adcoms. Don’t take psych in school. Self-study and take the AP test if you want, and indicate so on your app, but I wouldn’t suggest burdening yourself with an extra AP.

What did you think of the new essay prompt about an experience in which you have failed?

I think I’m using the essay I wrote for that prompt

I was going to write my essay about that actually, like even before reading the prompt 'cause I thought it would be something somewhat more original, but then now if evenly spread 20% of applicants will do the same thing.-.

Well, now that there’s no free topic, everybody is doing the same thing so it doesn’t really matter.

I think my Common App essay is the worst thing I have ever written. It makes me want to cry and die.

I think this whole application process is very stressful and has turned me into a more emotional person. I cannot WAIT for this all to be over!

Yeah, mine’s not very good either. Haha, I have nothing inspirational to say and I feel like the topics don’t compliment me very well. My failure isn’t that epic, but it is stupid and humiliating for sure, so there’s a plus. I did come back and learn from it and all, but I’m really unsure of what this is going to tell the people reading my application.

Does anyone know when the Harvard Supplement is going to be released?
