On the portal, does the writing supplement appear separately from the application? I submitted my writing supplement (optional essay) at the same time as my application (both appear as submitted in my Common App account) but on the portal there is only a green check for the application and the writing supplement is nowhere to be seen. Is it considered as part of the application or should I have another green check specifically for that optional essay? If that´s the case, then I guess they haven´t received my supplement…

@12345LU The supplemental essay is submitted separately. You have go to the colleges tab and down to Harvard where you will see a separate area where it says “Review and Submit- Writing Supplement.” and then submit there.

Just a general question, I got my piano teacher to submit a recommendation letter for me but it isn’t showing up in portal as “received” like my other application materials, but it is shown as having been downloaded from the Common App. Does that mean that they have my piano teacher’s rec letter?

@toonotey, I think supplemental recs do not show up. That’s what happened for me.

Thanks for answering! But the thing is that I have already submitted the writing supplement on the Common App and it does not show up on the portal. My question is: on your portals (not on your Common App account), do you have two green checks, one for the application and the other one for the writing supplement? Or, just like it happens to me, your supplement does not appear there?

More info about the admissions process.

Still waiting anxiously for my interviewer to contact me.

Will they start reading applications if teacher references haven’t all been uploaded? I’m still seeing a blank on two of my references (one of them supplemental) and I’m getting a bit anxious about it…

@PcollegegirlP: I’m also hoping for the 11th! The wait is already killing me, and I only turned in my app a week ago…I don’t know how I’ll wait for RD results!
@WooTheDay: I’d also like to know this. My teacher recs are the only things that aren’t complete, and both my teachers say that they uploaded them. Does anyone know if it takes longer to receive when they’re uploaded through Navaince? I doubt it, but I guess it’s a possibility.

I just got word of a new international speaking engagement for me in Hungary. Would this be notable enough to inform the admissions department? It’s not my first international engagement, so I don’t want to waste their time by informing them of one more new one.

Thoughts?

@HobbitTon if they’ve already seen all your other engagements, I’m sure they already have a good grasp of who you are.

ALSO: Any other female computer science majors here? Do you think Harvard would give preference to female computer science majors if my scores/extracurriculars are strong enough?

@skslxxbjk ME! Glad to see fellow females taking an interest in computer science (although I guess it’s more competition). Regardless, can’t wait to see you on campus! :)

I can’t believe this is my first time seeing this! Hi, guys! I had the craziest wave of anxiety when I hit submit lol… I submitted through Common App and also submitted an Art Supplement through slideroom (on dance and choreography). Does anyone have any idea how an Arts Supplement effects your application? I did it because I thought, “why not?”… Also, what did you guys choose to write for your supplement? I chose “letter to your future roommate” but after reading some posts I feel like I should have posed an intellectual question of my own…

@tinydancer97 yeah, my english teacher specifically said the letter to your roommate idea never turns out well… But it’s not a big deal. If the rest of your application rocks, no way they’re gonna deny you because of an EXTRA essay.

@skslxxbjk Are your extracurriculars related to CS?

@tinydancer97, It’s not a letter to your roommate. It is “What you would want your future college roommate to know about you?”

@Crimsix Yay!!! I’m so excited and nervous and ahhhhh feelings!!! Hahah
@Falcon1 Yep! I programmed a few websites, had an internship, studied at Stanford, created apps, etc. but actually, my main extracurricular was volunteering (closer to 1000 hours).

Now that the topic came up, what did you guys write your essays about?

@skslxxbjk - I wrote about my favourite poem. A part of me is regretting it a bit, some parts were a bit risky so I’m not sure if it’ll work out in my favour or not… tried to make it memorable whatever that means…

@skslxxbjk For Common App, I chose the one that talks about the place where you’re content and wrote about the stage (I know, it’s ridiculously cliche, but it’s well written and there’s a slightly different take on it). For the supplemental, I’ll be completely honest with you guys… I haven’t submitted it yet. I didn’t even decided to apply to Harvard, let alone SCEA, until around October 25th, and I didn’t realize there was a supplemental (but basically required) essay until the 30th. So yeah, doing my best to pull that one together lol… I chose the “roommate” one because it was the easiest to start brainstorming on, and it’s surprisingly good so far. How about you?

Also, just wondering… how many of y’all had private college counseling/essay editors?

I wrote my Common App about being medievaced from the Greenlandic Ice Sheet and my research experience in Greenland in general. My supplement was a letter to my roommate.
