Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2019 Applicants Thread

@TinyDancer97‌ I wrote my personal statement on the transformations I’ve undergone due to half of my family’s physical handicaps. My supplemental essay (I wrote this on Halloween and turned it in on 11/1… YAY procrastinators unite! Haha) was a unique take on my desire to go into the technology/compsci (social networking specifically) industry.

@TinyDancer97 I didn’t have any but really wished I had, especially since one of my closest friends has been receiving tutoring since she was literally 14 years old. I didn’t even know what the SAT WAS then!

What are we allowed to submit as additional information in the portal? Has anyone submitted another essay or anything?

@HobbitTon‌ That sounds so interesting! You did research in Greenland?! How did you end up over there?

@WooTheDay‌ yeah, I had a really interesting summer! I got a National Science Foundation grant that completely covered my expedition to the Greenland Ice Sheet for 3 weeks. It was completely life-changing. I looked at oxygen isotope concentrations in the ice (which correlate to temperature chances) going back hundreds of years.

@skslxxbjk‌ and @Crimsix‌ do you guys think there is an advantage in applying to Harvard with an interest in CS, since not too many people interested in CS apply there especially for SCEA?

Guys! I have a question!
Do our interviewers submit a form kind of thing for us, meaning ticking in boxes or do they also write something about us!
My interviewer had his iPad and was typing the whole time. Will he like give a summary of all I said at the interview? Will he tell the admission officers about my passions and my character?

I’m sure they write something about us. I don’t know how important their opinion is?

@messibarca I don’t think intended major matters. Also CS is one of the most popular majors out there. (me included)

…I am actually applying to CS as a female as well. @skslxxbjk‌
My application doesn’t stand out as a CS major, though, and my essays were more Renaissance style.

@nomatterwhat‌ do u think they write what we told them about our hardships , life, etc?
Or do u think they just write a brief impression they had of us?
Neither do I know how important their opinion is!
But I do think that if they write something AMAZING that will definitely be a plus!

@PcollegegirlP, I really hope they’ll write something amazing! My interview is next Tuesday. :stuck_out_tongue:

@nomatterwhat‌ Is it true that intended major doesn’t matter? I’ve been really worried about my application lately, actually, because I realized I didn’t highlight “why CS is for me”. I’m mostly interested in CS because it’s flexible and useful for interdisciplinary science studies, such as computational neuroscience. My essays were really irrelevant, though, now that I think about it…common app essay was on cultural identity and open-mindedness, optional essay was a mixtures of qualities highlighting intellectual curiosity and personal philosophies…EC essay is about psychology/bio research (the analysis part requires me to write a program).

Oh great! Wish you all the best… Just be yourself and nail it! let us know how it goes!
@nomatterwhat‌

Thanks!

How does the interview process work? How soon after your app was submitted did you get a call?

I just submitted an application about an hour ago, and I don’t know if it’s too late. Is Nov. 1st a strict, hard-and-fast deadline, or is it more of a suggested deadline? What do you think?

It’s definitely the hard and fast deadline. Sorry.

@fairyfantasy, that’s what I think - majors don’t really matter. But your essay sounds awesome though. I was told your essay doesn’t have to match what you want to do in college, as long as it reflects your passion and intellectural drive and curiosity. After all those are the things that make someone thrive. I’m really not sure about my essay either. anyway I think I gave it my best shot.

Are you kidding me? It’s so unfair that they’re strict with those.deadlines! Why does it even matter?
